Beach chair vendors admit to nearly doubling prices for rentals

n6vendors1.jpg
PATTAYA:--Sun worshippers are complaining that increasing numbers of beach chair vendors are charging 20 baht more than the city-mandated rental rate of 30 baht.

Both Thai and foreign tourists have complained about vendors, many near Central Festival Pattaya Beach, using the busy Songkran period to jack up rates for beach chairs and umbrellas.

Only 50 baht?? Try getting a beach chair in Phuket for that price! You guys in Pattaya don't know how lucky you are. tongue.png

In Hua Hin down the soi opposite market village they charge 100 Baht a day but the good side is they are not crammed in like sardines in a tin.blink.png

And who gives these people the right to occupy the beaches and charge for space - the beaches belong to the country and the people not the armchair mafia. Same in Phuket, Hua Hin and other destinations. Land of Scams.

Thai wife who is a local, tells me they pay a license fee to Pattaya City Council, some have had the concessions for many years

So Pattaya City Council are responsible for the abortion of an eyesore and the scams of the deck-chairs. They also go hand in hand with jet ski operators.

Correct, but do you really believe the beach license inspectors are going to monitor and enforce the agreed rental price with the chair rental operators. Maybe they will announce yet another "crackdown". Wife & I went to one of the beaches in Sattahip controlled by the Navy, a vendor was asking for 100 baht each for dirt encrusted plastic bed chairs. We just walked away and found some shade under a tree.

I find these massive areas of chairs and umbrellas to be obtrusive to enjoying the beach.

I dont like it either. For example Cha-Am beach that is huge is very crowded with umbrellas and not enjoyable at all. I try to avoid such places. But then again you wont find many food places on empty beaches so have to carry own food/snack.

i'll stick to laying on my towel like i have all my life in Australia,we don't have this sort of crap on our beaches, our beaches are free to visit and enjoy.

Yep, miss those Australian beaches, going back next year for a break and looking forward to the clean beaches and ocean

I think with the amount of people using the beach chairs they are justified, Thais like to sit there and eat/drink during holidays.

Yes on Phuket you pay double price but the beaches are double so nice.

Sure Australia have some really nice beaches but no shade? I like shade when sitting on the beach. You also have Box Jelly Fish down there which nobody likes where you swim.

50 Baht????

if you head for the beach at the Asia Hotel (the one with the golf course) there is a sign, BEFORE you go down the stairs:

"Sunbed 80 Baht"

I did not bother to go down and check if their "sunbeds" are more comfortable than the deckchairs on the main beach.

The local authority I believe contracts the space to the operators, but I agree with your sentiments.

Yes we also go to Nang Rong under navy control and none of the BS associated with tourists traps. We also take our umbrellas and mast and take up a fair whack of the area without encroaching on other peoples areas. Simple really.

Well we all know what the answer to your complaint is, and it will free up 1 more space on the beach, win win really.

If these were not in cahouts with the Mafia then why has no one tried providing a good day bed like they supply in Sihanoukville cambodia and they don't even charge as they expect to make the monies out of food and drink
