BANGKOK, May 24 – Thailand’s current labour shortage will become more severe with two government mega projects needing at least 530,000 more workers, a senior Thai official said today.

Pravit Khiengpol, Department of Employment director general, said the country will be short by 1.6 million persons in the labour force and foreign workers will have to be hired.

The planned Bt2 trillion in infrastructure development projects will need at least 450,000 workers and the Bt350 billion water management project another 80,000 labourers, he said.

The two major projects will require workers in five fields – management at 2 per cent, engineering 5 per cent, supervisors and skilled labour 20 per cent, semi-skilled labour 36 per cent and non-skilled labour 37 per cent.

About 200,000-300,000 Thai workers are currently unemployed and the Labour Employment Department has set a target to provide at least 100,000 new graduates for the domestic labour market each year, he said.

He added that the Labour Department will import workers from Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia to accommodate the private sector while additional workers will be hired from other countries such as Bangladesh and Vietnam.

The migrant workers will mostly work in the construction and fisheries industries. (MCOT online news)

Well if you had listened twenty years ago and everyday since then and improved Thailand's education system ,you would need no one from outside, once again Thailand , like on various other issues , you have no one else but yourself to blame.coffee1.gif

"the Labour Employment Department has set a target to provide at least 100,000 new graduates for the domestic labour market each year, he said."

I think the above demonstrates the value of a degree in Thailand!

they just need a sharp stick to poke them with when they nod off. At our house the workers used to lounge around when the boss was not there, then he would turn up and have a sleep, wake up and clear off.

The fields of work, which are considered dirty work, which the majority of spoiled Thai kids and rich people try to avoid, because it's a loss of face....

cheesy.gif cheesy.gif cheesy.gif In all seriousness, as if the majority graduate students of today would soil their hands for "such dirty work", and overall AS IF their overprotecting parents would let them, causing their family circles lose face, Good forbid, their kids graduated from university, they're not supposed to do dirty work,....cheesy.gif cheesy.gif cheesy.gif Indeed their kids rather play with Iphones, facebook or social media all day long and do office jobs than soiling their hands with real dirty work....

so with this misconception of trillion kachillian Baht mega project labor planning, you can count those trillions of university students out... and rather give those jobs to the millions of vocational students, that'll keep them at least too busy then planning rival gang wars....wai2.gif

There's plenty of Issan workers available for work, but the problem is most are alcoholics and not reliable enough to take the job seriously, like these mega projects that are planned. Hence, Thailand must look outside the country to find qualified laborers.

Thailand does not need more laborers. Thais need to get a work ethic. There is no shortage of people available, but they are just too damned lazy to get their hands dirty and do a decent days work.

mate, I did that for 40 years in Australia in the building industry, maybe you should try working outside yourself instead of just bitching about others. I would gladly go back into the same industry here except their standards are bamboo poles as scaffold and no tradesmen what so ever, they are only good for doing lackies work and even then what they do is that far below par it would be condemmed anywhere else.

If the laws for foreigners were relaxed and not so xenophobic you might find it easier to fill jobs. Unfortunately most foreigners are detered as you need a mountain of paperwork to fill in along with usual bribes and other expenses to get both a work permit and of course the right visa, and naturally you need to open a company up if one isn't already been established. Then every month there is more expense, since foreigners have to pay more tax than Thais (which is very racist), depends on your nationality .. of course ! Thereafter you have to report every 90 days to immigration.... and you wonder why nobody works in Thailand !

Well; there's a lot of graduates who cannot get jobs, but they would no be happy on the less than the 300b per day the slave workers will get.

Well those Facebook profiles won't update on their own yet cheesy.gif

There is still a very large percentage of thailand population that works in farming, about 40%. It is very high compared to any developped country. The country will have to face its agricultural revolution sooner or later... but it's a bit too late now. In the meantime there will be inevitably massive workers imports from neighboorhood countries, not a very good strategy from the government.

Most of the workers are coming from Cambodia, if you go to the border with Cambodia you will see many of them going into Thailand.

I know some people in the constructing field. They told me that they offer higher salary, bonus and many benefits to construction workers, but even they are too lazy to take it seriously, and all get drunk every night...

then the cambodian come to take their jobs and they get pissed. LOL

Should read Thai developers need 1.6 million more slaves.

The government is dead right with their figures.

People who don't want to work are not included in unemployment figures anywhere in the world.

Meanwhile in Phuket anyone foreign are being harassed for working the jobs the Thais are to lazy or to dumb to do. I love this place because it is so full of contradictions. It never fails to amuse. clap2.gifwhistling.gifcheesy.gif

What is that mega project so that Thai government needs to get workers from other countries?

Where infact even womens here in Thailand do the work of men like in building constructions.

If the project is true and that they need manpower, they missed to consider workers from the Philippines.

Filipinos make the greatest number of overseas worker in many different countries around the world. Whether

the work is an office work, engineering work, construction, etc.

And they need them from out of the country, expats, because they can't afford to pay Thais 300 baht a day.

They can't afford Thai labor costs. Too expensive since the 300 baht minimum.
