My bratty nephew broke the earth prong off my expensive earthed surge protector power strip to plug it into a 2 pin outlet. Where can I find NICE LOOKING 3 pin plugs to replace the useless original?

I have only seen cheap and nasty looking ones in Home Pro.

Thanks for any info.

Does your house actually have the earth connected?

I saw a range of plugs in tesco lotus

Yes indeed, I installed them myself, and the ground rods, but did not replace all the existing 2 pin outlets, as most appliances in the house are 2 pin.

I'll check out Tesco next time I'm up in Chiang Mai. Thanks for that.

I too have had this same dilemma.

The problem is, the only reasonable looking 3-pin plugs available aren't cheap as they're all either hospital or audio grade *cough*

This place will give you an idea of what's available: http://www.avbestbuy.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=90 - click the "audio grade", "hospital grade" and "spec grade" links and keep on drilling down...

Another option is to buy a new IEC cable, cut the IEC end off and re-wire the power board ;)

This place sells a pretty wide range (up to 10M long) at reasonable prices (from 35 baht), and I can confirm that the earth pin is indeed wired. If the power board will be running more than 1800watts, make sure you get the 300/500V 1mm2 stuff though:

Cooper Wiring Devices commercial grade, grounded 2867 plugs are a fair price 30 or 35 baht each as I recall at the Surin IQ Modern Trade Store. Several of the Audio equipment shops in FortuneTown Mall in Bangkok have Hospital Grade plugs with "Monster prices". The Cooper 2867 have held up well at our home and it was a fair price in my opinion.

I think these are the ones we've all seen, and the reason why the OP is asking for "nice looking" ones, hehe.

This might be OK out in my workshop, but no way would anything in my house get something this ugly ;)

You are correct and having that on my powerstrip would be adding insult to injury.

Might have to take IMHO advice and use a completely new wire.

Thanks for all the replies- much appreciated.

I found something that looks like that in Robinsons, Central Airport, Chiang Mai. .

Top floor of Robinsons near PowerBuy. 115 baht.

They also had 3 wire cables with moulded plugs either end for 69 baht. However, not very long and I wanted to keep as much cable length as possible.

This is the best looking out there. spoilt by cheap easily breakable plastic, drop it and I reckon it would break, i have several of these. Compared to a UK 3 pin which are way way stronger with tough shock resistant plastic.

At least haco got the pin in the right place for the cable to fall downwards.

Actually the Haco plug is quite robust. It's stronger than it looks and is so light that a drop doesn't bother it, nowhere near as beefy as a UK plug but even they are becoming rather flimsy.

As you note, the cable goes the right way and it looks reasonable.

Do avoid the similar looking plug from WonPro, the cable entry is in the wrong place so you can't actually get two into a double outlet.

I have about 20 of the Haco 3 pin plugs in my home, they are a lot stronger than they look, easy to fit to 3 core cable and trouble free.

I have my house fitted with UK plugs and sockets, much better

than the wobbly Thai plugs .

I have noticed the Thai plugs have live wire on left where UK

plugs have Live on the right.

Also pull light switches in the shower rooms, better safe than

sorry.

Even better again is bathroom switches outside the bathroom itself - then there's no strings to break. Just don't do it if you live in a house full of pranksters ;)
