I haven't seen these around in Bangkok - this doesn't necessarily mean they're not available, though I did look briefly. On Amazon they are advertised for anything from $100 to $300.

However unless you are really looking for HiFi sound quality, nowadays the easiest and cheapest way to get internet radio is to buy a cheap android phone and use that as a dedicated radio - you don't need to buy a SIM card as you use your home wifi internet. You can listen with the speaker on the phone, with headphones, or with powered auxiliary speakers plugged into the phone earphone plug.

What I did:

1. Bought a no-name android phone ( Andropad A301, Tesco Lotus 1650baht ). WiFi ready so just hooked into my home Wifi network.

2. Downloaded the free app TuneIn Radio from the Google Playstore (phone is already loaded with Google Playstore to download apps).

TuneIn Radio allows search for tens of thousands of stations by name, country, genre etc. Took 5 min to find and save Radio 4, Radio1, LBC, BBC World Service, NPR from US and a couple of music stations as a favourites list.

4. I use phone on mains power while playing as battery life is only a couple of hours. To listen across a room I plug jack of phone into amplified speakers (700B cheapo ones). I had to buy a special jack plug to RCA phono plug lead, since the earphone/microphone combination jack plug on this phone is the longer version with 3 stripes not two, and I couldn't get the standard two stripe jack plug to work.

You can buy these leads at Fortune Town for 150 baht- they have three RCA plugs not two, so I plugged the white and red ones into the phono plugs on my speakers and then connected the tip of the spare yellow plug onto the outer ring of one of the others to complete the circuit to get the bass channel to work (I found this out by fiddling around)- bit of wire did the trick.

Sounds great!

I bought one two years ago and have had no problems with it, except of course when the internet service goes down.

It is a Revo Pico which is water resistant and portable thanks to it's internal rechargeable battery. So it can go anywhere it can get my WiFi signal, indoors and out. It is available from their website www.revo.co.uk. From order to delivery took one week. Set up was simple and their helpline is indeed helpful if you need problem solving.

There are thousands of stations to select from, all over the world and in every imaginable genre. It is one of my best purchases in recent years.

This is useful to know-it does look cool.

Do you mean they delivered to Thailand in one week? Can you remember how much the delivery charge was? ( I'm always a bit hesitant about international orders in case of customs hold ups, vast charges etc. so I didn't try online sources)

Probably a silly question, but what's wrong with playing though some external speakers on your laptop/desktop? I listen to Radio Tuna, has an unbelievable choice of music genres.
