What is it with Thais and wrong numbers?

Featured Replies

why is that when i get a Thai call me and its a wrong number, why do they just gasp when i speak or say farang! and then put the phone down

also when i get a missed call and i call them back and its a Thai responder they deny ever making the call that i am returning

sometimes claiming its me who has wrongly dialed their number!

why not just say , ''wrong number'' in English or Thai or is it too much to expect to think they might admit making an error

answers on the back of a postcard please

allow 28 days for delivery

I never call back an unknown number, then half of the problem is gone.

On some occasions Thai people (especially teens) just dial a number and start some kind of conversation.

They have even been known to put credit on the wrong number, then call and ask if you could return the money/credittongue.png

You can be any country and get wrong number calls. Then the topic might be "What is it with Canadians and wrong numbers ?"

My pet peeve is less with the wrong number issue but that some argue that they have have called the right number and "Where is Noi ?" or whoever they thought they were calling.

Dare I say that "some folk'' are never wrong, even when they miss dial a number. Even been told I have a wrong number. Have learned that this is quite normal. whistling.gif ............smile.png

My ex's mother used to dial the daughter's mobile number and start the conversation with a demanding "WHO IS THAT?" w00t.gif

Kind of pre-emptive strike against the possibility of it being a wrong number even though it was an automatically dialled call-back,,,,, blink.png

A lot of problems stem from the "re-dial" function on most 'phones.

My home telephone number is 1 Digit different to the local Ice Shop - XX XXX 1223 instead of XX XXX 1233; a couple of times a month I will get people in Party Mode (i.e. drunk) calling and asking for an urgent Ice delivery, I tell them "wrong Number" and give them the Number they want (after several months trying to find out why I was being bothered I now know why!). However 9 times out of ten the caller will hang up and simply hit "re-dial"; apparently expecting the annoying Farang to have moved on in the meantime and been miraculously replaced by the Ice Shop.

Especially when you tell them it's the wrong number and they then call you again 3 or 4 times over the next 5 minutes laugh.png

....... and there was me thinking I was the only person that got these random calls from random Thais. When i get a call from an unknown number i answer it but say nothing. Next, after a few seconds I hear "Hullo Hullo Hullo". My reply is "Hullo Hullo Hullo" cheesy.gif

Remember folks, this is Thailand !!

i am pleased its not just me

i often sell things on the internet so if i miss a call i do call back in case its a sales call

thats when they deny all knowledge

i have a new trick now though, if i get a call and they do not respond when i speak, i just leave the line open

that way they use their credit not mine

i managed to hook one last week that was of over 7 minutes duration

petty?, small minded ? yes

happy? yes

This is a funny but very real topic.

Just another part of "quirky" Thailand.

And if you try to communicate with the caller it's like beatdeadhorse.gif.pagespeed.ce.adWp7jUAu

Oh dear, this is a light hearted thread, is there really any need for that post?

Maybe they don't talk to you when they figure out you are a farang because they can't speak English and are shy?

Also why would you intentionally try to waste a Thai's money or phone credit? That is just sick.

I get them every now and then especially after I've i've started using a new number. The numbers get recycled. You can hear question marks in their voice. biggrin.png

Other times if calling from overseas it's common for my number to show as a Bangkok number. That confuses people on the other end.

I never return calls to unrecognised numbers. It was a common ploy down south to use random people returning missed calls to set of bombs.

I spend a lot of time in the middle east. Instead of hanging up after being told they have the wrong number they start shouting and want to know why i've stolen Ahmads phone and why won't I let Ahmad answer the phone. I play a few games with them until they finally lose face and give up. laugh.png

Oh, how true!

Face face again!

A lot of Thais feel a little intimidated with an English speaker. If the phone caller didnt' speak English and had not much interaction with foregners, I would say that no disrespect intended and probably didnt know how to say sorry or wrong number

In the other end of the line: "Tee nai?"

Me: "Tee nee!"

Always works!

What does ''Tee nee'' mean, hope it's not naughty. giggle.gif

"Where are you" and "here I am"

I had some woman wanting to kill me because I kept answering when she dialled the wrong number. She was convinced I was up to no good somehow because she was dialling the right number but some bloody farang kept answering instead of her female friend.

It does seem seem to happen a lot in Thailand. Is it due to careless dialling or perhaps a technical reason due to inferior equipment. I am not a communications engineer but perhaps someone with more knowledge in this particular area may be able to confirm or not.

Back when all the numbers changed and 8 was added - I called up my friend...

Me: "Hey...Tdim, whatsup?... Beers tonight, meet at 9pm ?"

Answer: "Sure, where?"

Me: "No biggie, wherever - anywhere on your mind?"

Answer: "No, You ?"

Me: "Ok, usual place"

Answer: "OK, Where is that ?"

Me: "Haha... You forgot our usual hangout?"

Answer: "I guess So"

Me: "Is this Dtim ?"

Answer: "Sure it is, so where are we meeting"

Me: "are you sure you are Dtim, Who am I ?"

Answer: "I am Dtim, sure!"

Me: "Are you one of Dtims work mates and have picked up his phone?"

Answer: "No, this is Dtim" (but by then I realised it certainly wasn't !

Me: "I'm sorry, I have the wrong number" and hangup...

I call back half an hour later and have pretty much the same conversation...

The guy on the other end was laughing and playing along as Dtim (In English !!)... Quite the sense of humour, when I realised what I had done by dialling 018xxxxxx instead of 081xxxxxx I told the guy on the other end, we both found it funny, I apologised again and hung up...

So.. I have been that person who's dialled the wrong number, insisted I was right and then followed up with the same wrong number and insisted I was right again... To top if off, the guy on the other end had a sharp sense of humour ...
