Business associations criticise lack of computer-network security
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Three business associations have called on the government to implement stronger security for computer networks and the Internet, following a blackout at CAT Telecom's office in Bang Rak yesterday, which shut down business and e-commerce transactions for several hours.

Thai Webmaster Association, the Thai e-Commerce Association, and the Digital Advertising Association (Thailand) said the blackout, allegedly caused by anti-government protesters who temporarily occupied CAT's offices on Chaeng Wattana Road yesterday, tarnished Thailand's image and hurt local and foreign investor confidence in the government's ability to protect important computer assets.

They called on government to investigate the incident at CAT and hold those involved responsible for any damage they had caused. The associations also criticised government agencies for not having a computer security system in place that could protect computer networks and the Internet from unpredictable attacks.

Computer systems and Internet servers were shut down yesterday causing huge damage to online businesses, including websites, electronic commerce, and digital advertising, the associations said.

As a result of the blackout, domestic and overseas e-commerce transactions could not be completed and communication channels for a number of operators were cut.

Yes.....a bit frightening when a bunch of political thugs can determine whether business, government and the private sectors can have internet services!

Who among us would ever expect Thais to have PRO-active measures in place around security? Come on man. That's a joke, right. Maibenrai.

It actually should be viewed as an act of terror and a breach of the Nation's security. Thais don't seem to ever consider security issues.

Thais don't seem to ever consider security issues.

Asians don't seem to ever consider security issues. Thailand is not unique in this. It is virtually impossible to get network operators in any Asian country to proactively implement best current practices to make their networks and ancillary supporting services like DNS resilient and highly available.

Single-threading is the name of the game, here, because it's cheap and simple - until it isn't, heh, and then it's all chaos and confusion and screaming.

Sigh.

I just hope that any nuclear reactor building here is shelved until say year 3013. Just incase.
