US, UK raise rally concerns about rising political tensions

BANGKOK: -- The US and UK embassies in Thailand have expressed concern about rising political tensions and say they are closely following the demonstrations.

They posted their concerns on their official Facebook pages when anti-government protesters from the Civil Movement for Democracy (CMD) yesterday attempted to take over key government offices including Government House, the Royal Thai Police Headquarters and the Metropolitan Police Bureau.

The US Facebook page said: "As long-time friends of Thailand, we strongly support the Thai nation and its people during this period.

"We urge all sides to refrain from violence, exercise restraint, and respect the rule of law.

"Violence and the seizure of public or private property are not acceptable means of resolving political differences.

"The US firmly believes all parties should work together to resolve differences through peaceful dialogue."

The UK Facebook page urged people to avoid all protests, political gatherings and demonstrations.

In Nay Pyi Taw, the spokesman for Myanmar President Thein Sein has called on the Thais and the government to solve political problems peacefully.

Deputy Information Minister Ye Htut told the Bangkok Post that Myanmar has monitored Thailand's political crisis for years.

"According to our [political] experience, we think national reconciliation is the most important thing to help move the country forward," Ye Htut said.

Asked whether Myanmar President Thein Sein has raised the problem of Thai politics for talks with Myanmar ministers, Ye Htut said politics is an internal issue of Thailand.

Myanmar has been under military rule since 1962.

However, in 2010 an election was held and in 2011 a new political system was introduced and a democratic government inaugurated.

BANGKOK: -- The American embassy yesterday voiced concern over the escalating protest situation in Thailand, urging all parties to resolve their differences through peaceful means.

Posted on its official Facebook page, the US embassy said as a long-time friends of Thailand, it strongly supported Thai nation and the people during this period.

It urged all side to refrain from violence, exercise restraint, and respect the rule of law.

It said violence and seizure of public or private property are not acceptable means of resolving political differences.

It firmly believed all parties should work together to resolve differences through peaceful dialogue.

Meanwhile the British embassy also posted on its official Facebook urging the people to avoid all protests, political gatherings and demonstrations.

US warns its citizens to avoid rallies

BANGKOK: -- The US Embassy in Bangkok has warned its nationals to avoid areas of rallies and exercise caution if in the areas of large gatherings or demonstrations.

In its statement issued on yesterday and posted on its website, the embassy suggested them to be alert and pay attention to local news media reports.

"Domestic political activists in Thailand are holding large demonstrations at several sites throughout Bangkok. These demonstrations may continue in the coming days, including at several Thai government facilities in areas within and outside of Central Bangkok," read the statement.

It said violence, including gunshots, was reported on the night of November 30 and morning of December 1 in the area of Ramkhamhaeng University in the Bang Kapi district and at least two persons have been reported killed and several dozen have been reported injured. Police have used tear gas and other measures to protect government facilities at several locations in Bangkok.

Moreover the Thai government have recommended that residents remained at home from 10pm of Dec 1 through 5am of Dec 2.

"Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. You should avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations," read the statement.

Media outside of Thailand are inclined to report the same record of behaviour, though I'm surprised that even this hits the headlines, given this is a repeat of many demonstrations before.

The reality is that Thailand is not important enough to be taken seriously, one of many third-world countries in the world not contented with their government, well tell us something new. Better to pack your bags and go home, and wait for the next election, and vote in the ballot box like normal people.

If you want to turn heads, then erradicate corruption, demonstrate to the world that you can behave in a civilised manner, if not, then remain silent.
