Melbourne can merge as long as its not with the kangaroos.

Have already been through it with fitzroy, its not nice to lose that history.

Reality says they wont merge, win a couple of games and you have one of the biggest support bases in the afl.

Should the Roos merge?

Personally, I thought the Roos should've relocated to Tasmania when they were

offered a truck load of money and concessions by the AFL.

Even in their halcyon days under Barassi, when they picked up all of those players

and played in 5 consecutive grand finals, they still did not pull in great crowds.

They have pretty low membership also.

I'm pretty sure the Norths, St Kilda's and WB's of this world will soon be overtaken by

the GC and maybe GWS.

I hope not Bookman,i'm a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to footy.

I never liked the inception of the eagles in 87 as it killed grass roots footy in the country.

And i have a bugbear about all the continuous rule changes, for example they bring in the no sliding rule and as a result we see players getting reported for head clashes. The shirtfront is gone because we play atheletes who dont have a footy brain, etc etc.

To me clubs with history is more important than starting a new club in a non afl area getting 8000 to a game.

Agreed 18 clubs is way to many, get rid of the new ones. There simply isn't enough good players to make up 18 squads.

Long live north melbournebiggrin.png or is that north tasmaniasad.png

Sorry while i'm ranting if took away gws, gold coast, port and dockers.

There's another 200 good players which would go into excisting clubs and the competition would be healthy from top to bottom.

Maybe i should be running the afl from thailand.tongue.png

Geez farmerjo lighting some fires there mate... Fortunately Khun Will27 is not only a hansum man, he also have good heart so he'll likely overlook your comments :P

If you're going to shaft the Eagles, you better add the Crows to that list :P

I can see where you're coming from farmerjo, but you're looking at it IMO, purely from a Victorian

point of view. If it wasn't for the inception of WC and others, it would still be the VFL.

And then WA, SA and the other states would've continued to be pillaged by the likes of Carlton and Essendon.

Those of us outside of Victoria would have to be content with watching the best on TV.

I'm not sure if GWS will be a success. Maybe they can merge, but I cannot see the one of the smaller

Melbourne clubs winning a GF in the foreseeable future.

Thats where i got left behind Khun Willthumbsup.gif

I'm proud west aussie and your right about not being able to see first class footy without eagles/crows in comp.

Guess i'm old fashioned,i would take back vfl being the premier comp and best players heading to melbourne to see state of orgin again and 15000 at a fremantle derby or a least 5-6000 at a normal fixtured wafl match.

Nowdays your lucky to get 3-400 people.

I can see GWS being successful...eventually. We'll see plenty of Swans players heading to GWS in years to come and vice versa. GWS will seem more accessible to a lot of fans than the Swans. It will take some years though, and a big name signing.

AFL is here to stay though but no reason there couldn't be another team in WA or SA and also Tassie. One of the keys will be unlocking the playing talent in NSW and QLD so there is more depth of talent

I'm a West Perth supporter and nothing was better than watching them at Leederville oval

in big games.

With the Eagles having a long list for memberships, it was nearly impossible to get tickets

unless you were member.

I don't have the passion for WC as much as I did for West Perth. But that's mainly because

I used to see WP every week and everything was much more accessible.

These days it's too hard unless you get tickets.

Footy has just progressed too much now to have clubs financed by chook raffles etc.

Grass roots footy is just about gone.

Especially here in Chiang Raibiggrin.png

True, if I was in front, I'd be picking the same as farmerjo, but as I'm not.....

BookMan, our favourite team for picking, North Melbourne, have "rested" 5.

Maybe Melbourne are a sneaky chance?

Before last weeks train wreck to Port, Carlton were going ok.

Carlton/Ess games can often provide an upset.

GC are pretty hard to beat at home.

GWS should've beaten Coll last week so might be in with a chance against WB.

Funny things happen in the last roundbiggrin.png

Everything you say is a possibility, but I have to stick to my no change policy...or do I? whistling.gif

Not leaving anything in the tank this week, can't finish at the bottom, so be that as it may I won't be leaving without a few rough picks to close out the H&A Season ;)

Well this was hardly unexpected..

http://afl.to/1sEvQyO

Both he and Folau gave the AFL plenty of publicity for their new clubs. They were the biggest stars for the Rugby League and it was a sensible strategic move to sign them to get publicity.

Folau has moved on to bigger and better things, be interesting how Hunt goes back League. He wasted his best years in a way, but he was certainly financially compensated for it.

Folau was on more money than buddy, i twas rumoured

Yes definitely quite the coup to land those 2 big names from League. I'm sure the AFL / GC / GWS were all aware that this was never going to be a long term thing.

Appears Hunt is following in Folau's footsteps and going to play Super Rugby with the Queensland Red next year.

Confirmed that K.Hunt has joined the Queensland Reds...

At the end of the day, I just think there are too many teams in Melbourne.

Clubs with low supporter bases can only hope to be competitive and at

best win the odd final or two.

IMO, they will only ever just tread water.

The WB are a perfect example.

i'd like to see an expansion of the Academy system for GWS, Swans, Brissie and GC.

The AFL should be putting in at least $10 million a year for the NSW academies... i think they put in $1 million now? The Academy clubs can use their first couple of draft picks on whatever players they want, but all other players go into the national draft. Eventually there might be stronger feeder clubs so the AFL can do away with the academies for individual clubs. AT the moment though, the established interstate AFL clubs have the infrastructure and coaching and staffing requirements needed.

The AFL has a tremendous opportunity to get hundreds more potential players available, but petty squabbling from the likes of Eddie is distracting them from the big picture. You have NSW and QLD with 50% of the population, but only 4 teams and an inferior juniors competition. AFL is also competing against Union and League and Soccer. Soccer is the biggest threat, but throwing money into development is the way to go.

The interstate academies benefit all teams with extra players coming into the system, but it just needs to be BIGGER

This is a take on soccer, so nothing new, i think the old notion of each club grooming there under 17 and 19's was the best way forward.

Soccer will eventualy be hugh here, it just has to be, the 3 football codes can live comfortably side by side here about the only area where they could conflict is with what tv will pay for the rights, soccer and afl are truly national rugby sort of, im still amazed none of the comercial broadcasters have rushed in to sew up the rights to soccer for the next 10 years, 1 friday night game on sbs is below expectaions i think.

I like to see a stop to expanding the comp, i think 18 teams are to much for the system we have, 16 was plenty under our finals like structure, it is time a few clubs bite the bullet and merged, even the happless Dees can go merge, this is 2014 now not 1977, we dont buy cds anymore we all want power steering and air con in our cars compaines merge..........

I think soccer puts most people to sleep, I find it a boring game lacking in skills and played by people who are afraid of contact sports. Watching paint dry is far entertaining.

Yes chooka your a good man, king and country red white and blue through served our motherland well, but you know jack poo about soccer, The Hawks under Allen jeans introduced soccer style defensive play that is still been used to this day, Roos took it further with the Swans, there is contact in the game if you dont like you dont like but your in the minority my dear boy.

As a kid I rarely missed a Cardies games at Leederville.

My heroes were Whinnen, Dempsey, Foley, Evans, France, etc.

It wasn't unusual for a crowd of over 20,000 to cram in for an East Perth, West Perth Derby.

I remember seeing a young Mal Brown playing for the Royals.

Years later I played a few games on Leederville, albeit wearing a Subiaco jumper.

Ahhhh you bring tears to my eyes old croc....reminising about the good old days, the time some young larikin tiger supporters were flicking meat pie bits from high above at the G, landing on my shoulder.....3 times....hot blooded young man i use to be marched up stairs to confront these barst****ds, the local constabulary to busy watching the game noticed from the corner of there eye my rage as i cased the stand for the vermin....while been questioned the said vermin began flicking alleged meat pie but before i could confront them a hand appeared on my shoulder..."let us deal with it son" with great delight i watched 2 hoons escorted out....

Then there was the time and Bookman wont like this....at a Dee and Swans game sitting in the outer at the G i was doing my normal verbal excersises, around early 3rd quarter darling grannie sitting behind me decided she had enough of my banter, well we were 5 or 6 goals up too, took it apon her self to wack me with her red and white unbrella.

A few years on from that and a few rows back this time a group of around 6 young Dee suporters standing and drinking...behind me, around mid second quarter the dude directly behind me basicly spat his beer over the back of my neck...now what can i do? Well i was a firey young man...but there were 6 of them and they were following the same team...i accepted his apology, about 15 min later he did it again........WOW faster than a speeding bullet i jumped up and turned to face him spitting pure fire at this pr**k and with a voice old ron barassi and the stare of a micky malthouse would be proud of i gave this son of a bitch the biggest dressing down, hes mate....short and young wanted to get involved...i turned my venom towards him...he took a step back....i managed to scare the living daylights out of six guys....hahaha...i demanded they move away from me and they did...

Yes croc they were the good old days....i recall a windy day way out east a 1 hour drive to the house of pain...Waverly something or other, think it was Paul Roos first game for Fitzroy but i may be mistaken best on ground too if it was that game, recored VFL/AFL score...32 goals kicked against us, dam we were bad...disgusting...The lions were in the 5, fifth placed bombers were licking there lips the following week, at the G, they were going to cement there place in the 5, if there is a team i love to beat its the bombers, they kicked the crap out of us more than anyone else and there suporters.....well...to everyones suprise the Dees rolled them, good old carl ran around with his elbow at chest height the whole game knocking heads off, now why cant we do that sort of thing today?

Then around 1997 i had the misfortune of dating a bombers supporter, she was a sports nut, she came to a few Dee games then i needed to oblige, as i said earlier i cant stand the bombers and to top it off she was a bit of a contoller as well, well the first game i went to with her was to a bombers and eagles game at the G, well i couldnt sit there and not take a side, i use to get vocal at the footy and just forget who was around me....well before i knew it i was making a few coments on the run of play in favor of the eagles, a cold stare followed....several times she put me in my place...sometime later i got brought along to the collingwood game, well if your a melbourne supporter you would realize i was in hell. The magpies that day were beign cricified by the umps by mid second quarter i couldnt hold back from the injustice of it all and thats when i realized i hated the bomber more than anyone else, i am a libra and we stand for justic (hehe) my pretty thing did not approve of me taking the side of the down trodden and lucky for me the pies over ran the bombers booting 10 glorious goals in the last quarter to silence me, but the damaged was done...no sex that night for me.

Move on a year or 2...the bombers were unstopable only loosing 1 game for the year and i think it was to the saints, perlimary final against carlton...the unbelivable happened, the blues knocked of the red hot bombers....now even i couldnt belive that....i roll up to pretty things house a dinner part we were to have, oh my she and guests in shock, turns out every guest is a mad bomber suporter, im hungry i would like to eat, she forgets her good manners and no nibblies come out, im to polite to ask then shock horror they all crouch around the tv...c7 is replaying the game....i cant belive it...there all glued to the tv....they need to see it?...cant they belive they were beaten im thinking...tummy is rumbling...we watch the whole dam game...geeeesssss...we evently have dinner and the conversation is about the days happing...i was pretty sure i wasnt going to get any sex so i went home early.

And the repercusion of that game came back to haunt me the following season Those red hot bombers were never going to loose a final again...ho no...the Dees make it to the GF........record GF loosing score...ho my...well i had ditched pretty thing mid season so at least i didnt have to worry about that years dinner party.

Yes old croc...those were the good old days.

Now you make me recall the dark dark days bit like whats been happing to us last 8 years, we were so bad in the 70s and 80s id go watch a decent team and that was the hawks, i was there at princess park when the only man who could have done it was mathews, it was just he and neville bruns ironed out like a shirt with now one closer than 70m.

Then the time, barassi's first season back at western oval...only game we won and i went to just about everyone that year we came from behind when robbie brownlow flower kicks a goal with less than a minuet to go.

In the 90s under northey but thanks to barassi and co we began to inprove....last game of the season we had won 5 on the trott out of the 5 by a game and percentage we had to beat the dogs to make it and the hawks had to win, well we did our part but the hawks had been trailing most of the day. The hawks game was running about 4 min behind ours, the crowed stood there trannies in hand...the hawks run over who ever and the western oval ascended into heaven something like 23 years since we had reached the finals. We steamed rolled north and i think the swans to get to the perlim, it was just the best feeling............

One day out at western oval short terry "cry baby" wallace ducked into a tackel from a flying rod grinter, this happened less than 5 meters from where i was standing, i had a very clear view of it and the umpire was definatly out of position and viewing from behind, grinter was comited and feet off the ground and hurling towards wallace, wallace has the ball is turning and under pressure he ducked into it what ended up a head high tackle braking his jaw, if wallace had of stood his ground grinter would have grabed his chest, to me and in those days if you ducked a tackle u got pinged, it was trial by the roar of the dogs members, grinter got 6 weeks and to this day i think it was a great injustice and what made it worse was the twerp came out and critized grinter.

Ahh yes the good old days of no seats standing on a dirt mountain, gees we had some dreadful grounds i was lucky i use to get to go to the G every second week.

Here is one thing a couple oef AFL players have picked up from Soccer!

Afl players love mixing it up. AFL players will go out play and not tippy toe around a tiny little field and be scared to get their slippers dirty. I an opposition player comes near them they won't adopt the facial position and scream. Call time out and I need clean clothes. An AFL player will be a man and fight for his team, he will break ribs play on and break legs and try to stand and support his mates.

A silly little soccer player will curl up and cry like an idiot. The difference between AFL and Soccer is men an well...... Soccer players don't even come close to being men. Years gone buy these weak little people would have been eaten by their mothers

Very good mr chooka, are they burning off this time of year up there in chiang mai? or maybe your lovely wife is seasoning your pepper steak and 3 vegies with way to much chilli.

Ahhh mr bookman most of them uncivlized VFL grounds were like that, just a dirt mound Geelong was ummmm very very ordinary once, western oval and windy hill.

As for the attack from grannie no just one hit on my shoulder but she did threaten me once or twice with raised unbrella, i was also threatened by a fitzroy woman with unbrella ready to strike, something about sitting at the yarra side of the ground, i decided to move over to the blue rinse side of the ground and guess what? I never had anymore problems with unruly spectators.

One of the last AFL games i went to well several ( about 4 ys ago) i took my ex Thai wife, well didnt she get into it, beanie scarf bucket of chips.......( i bulls**t to her that the dees colors were very fashonable, she took the bait) Have you taken yours?

Yes the good old days................when you follow a team thats pure crap for 40 of the past 50 years lot more going on in the crowed than on the ground, and i might say i have done my apprentiship going to game after game after game, i was a member for so long.....23 years hovering around the bottom before a finals apperance, i did enjoy the northey era he was a super coach we had a fair team but not a great team yet he could get them up when it matered.

So today i take no prisoners and im with Roos...get rid of em.

I wonder if the guys playing for there future will put in one last hurrar this weekend against north if it were say the bombers or the pies id say yes but not the dees, they have consitently underpreformed since baily took over, no spine no pride, they couldnt even win for jimmy stynes.

Hey its almost trade week again..........................the best part of the season for me....

ps ......my tip for preimers are the Swans, the landing of franklin is what tips the balance and in my opinon easily the best player for the last 5 years, he wore 23 at the hawks as did dermi who was my most favorite player, both these guys just give and give and give, ever dangerous ever reliable.
