Finance Ministry: 2013 GDP growth unaffected by seizures of govt buildings

BANGKOK, 12 December 2013 (NNT) - The Ministry of Finance confirms the protesters’ occupation of many government offices will not hurt this year’s GDP growth but will have a slight effect on the government’s 2014 budget disbursement.

Permanent Secretary for Finance Rangsan Sriworasart said on Wednesday that the seizures of state offices would affect government spending especially the disbursement of investment budget. This year’s GDP growth, however, would be left unscathed, the official said.

According to Mr Rangsan, the 2013 GDP growth rate is expected to stand at 3%. As for the ministry’s economic stimulus measures during the government’s caretaker period, they could be implemented if they were under the jurisdiction of the ministry. The measures which were related to government policy would be reviewed by the Election Commission first since they might benefit some political parties in the next general election, he said.

THAI TALK
Snap election without reconciliation won't resolve crisis

Extraordinary times demand extraordinary measures, vision and sacrifice.

BANGKOK: -- These are indeed demanding times for Thai politics. Premier Yingluck Shinawatra, by dissolving Parliament to call a snap election, was only beating a retreat. The move wasn't supposed to solve the longstanding, deep-rooted conflict, which promises to rear its ugly head again once the election campaigns begin.

More nations show concern
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- At least six nations plus the European Union have so far issued statements calling on parties in Thailand to solve their political differences through democratic means.

France is the latest to issue a statement. French Foreign Ministry spokesperson Romain Nadal said, "France is concerned about developments in the political situation in Thailand, which is being closely monitored.

"We call for an easing of the current political tensions in view of the forthcoming legislative elections. We encourage Thailand's political leaders to find a peaceful resolution that fully respects the institutional framework, the rule of law and democratic principles."

Australia also issued a statement yesterday to show its concern at the situation in Bangkok, following those from the US State Department, Germany, New Zealand and Canada.

Australia's Foreign Minister Julie Bishop noted in her statement issued yesterday that although Thailand had been grappling with major political challenges, she appreciated the way Thai authorities had allowed peaceful demonstrations and had responded in a restrained manner. "Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ms Julie Bishop, has expressed the hope that a decision by Thailand's premier to call an early election for February 2014 will help ease the country's political tensions," read the statement.

The French Foreign Ministry statement echoed Australia, saying: "We call for an easing of the current political tension in view of the forthcoming legislative elections. We encourage Thailand’s political leaders to find a peaceful resolution that fully respects the institutional framework, the rule of law and democratic principles."

CAPO will neither pull police out nor replace them with soldiers

BANGKOK, 12 December 2013 (NNT) – The Center for Administration of Peace and Order (CAPO) has asserted it will not heed the demand by protesters led by Suthep Thueksuban for the police to cease its oversight of protesters in Bangkok and for soldiers to carry out the supervision instead.

CAPO spokesperson Piya Uthayo said on Wednesday that Royal Thai Police Commissioner Adul Saengsingkaew had ordered police officers to ensure order at important sites such as Government House, Parliament, and airports although protest leader Suthep earlier demanded that the police pull out of all protest areas by Wednesday. Police Major General Piya said the police were duty bound to maintain law and order, and it was already working with soldiers in keeping the peace.

More riot policemen arrived and barb wires were put up at the gates of the Metropolitan Police Headquarters on Wednesday, after reports surfaced that protesters, disgruntled after the police declined to heed their demand, were planning to march to the Bangkok police's head office.

Private organizations to host talks on Thailand exit strategies

BANGKOK, 12 Dec 2013 (NNT) - Private organizations are to host talks on exit strategy tomorrow.

According to Vice President of the Thai Chamber of Commerce Wichai Assarassakorn, seven private institutions have offered to host a forum for academics and the press to brainstorm the nation's political reform before the national poll takes place.

The 7 private firms network will join forces with the Thai Broadcast Journalists Association and the News Broadcasting Council of Thailand organizing the seminar, aimed at finding viable solutions to the nation's chronic political gridlock.

According to Mr. Vichai, in order to arrive at common acceptable solutions, all related parties must be willing to talk and allow all sectors to take part in solving the national issues. He suggests that all sides refrain from creating political or legal conditions, while being open-minded to listen to others' ideas. The results of the talks will be announced to the public later on.

The forum will be held at Lotus Hall, Queen Sirikit Convention Center, at 11 am.
