Dozens injured in grenade attack in central Bangkok

Sort yourself out mate. First of all, Suthep is not Bangkokian and Bangkokians chose their own governor. To claim that people get attacked in Bangkok only because they were red is sheer lunacy. Considerable number of Bangkoians is originally from Isaan and they openly support PTP. There are numerous billboards around Bangkok promoting YL and PTP candidates, erected by PTP supporters completely undisturbed and unopposed. Grow up. Stop trolling.

I never said or claimed such a thing. And I know that all people in Bangkok are not all yellow shirts. If you read the post I was replying to it should be obvious what I was referring to.

And stop calling me mate, Brit.

Prakong Chuchan died from complications after shrapnel damaged a main artery and lacerated a lung. Photo: Prakong Chuchan / Facebook
PHUKET: -- A Phuket protester was the first to die during the “Bangkok Shutdown” after an unidentified person lobbed a bomb at a procession of demonstrators yesterday.
Prakong Chuchan, 46 years old and a member of the Royal Paradise taxi rank, died at 1:57am from complications brought on by severe injuries sustained during the bomb attack. Bomb shrapnel pierced Mr Prakong’s chest, damaging a main artery and lacerating his lung.
Mr Prakong travelled from Phuket to Bangkok on January 12 to join the protests. His last status on Facebook reads, “Even if we do not win, we will not back down.”
About 12 of the other injured protesters were also sent to Ramathibodi Hospital to undergo treatment for injuries sustained during the attack. Six of them have been discharged.

" About half an hour after the attack, the government's Centre for the Administration of Peace and Order warned members of the public and state officials against joining street protests organised by the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC).

Deputy Prime Minister Pracha : " He said any supporter of the protest movement, including those donating money, would be deemed to be violating the law. His warning was also directed at state officials who take part in the protest or sympathise with the protesters. They would face not only disciplinary action but also criminal prosecution and the reputation of their family would be negatively affected, he warned.

" Pracha did not mention the bomb attack in the statement. "
Isn't it fascinating that just 30 minutes after a terrorist grenade attack on innocent Thai people in Bangkok in the clear light of day, the administration releases a statement that does not even mention the bomb attack once, let alone their outrage, but instead focuses their rage towards the protesters, and a warning to any who join these protests, or donate money to them, or to those that even sympathize with them. Even state officials - and their families ! And that - ladies and gentlemen - is a totalitarian mindset that is not only tone-deaf to the cries of the wounded on the streets - who happen to be their own citizens - but also how they really regard free and peaceful expression.

A lot of those injured look like there is nothing wrong with them.

This looks like yet another fake staged stunt.

The tales in Thai politics are as ridiculous as the plots in Thai soaps.

Those who come on here to snigger and gloat at the injuries and death of people are the lowest order. Subhuman.

Where did you find out that it was a BB gun? Verified?

Yes, it was verified.

"Rifles" are BB guns. Other equipment (incl walkie talkies) are out-of-date "consumer" models.

Other websites report that the equipment belong to a security company which has a contract to guard the properties belonging to Chula University, and 2 of their guards use this room to sleep. Hence the dated equipment and BB gun.

It is uncertain whether there is any connection between the guards/this room and the grenade attack.

It would be of great benefit to the rest of us for you to identify the source of your information so that a serious discussion on this incident can be more rational and objective. Thank you.

Thanks for asking so nicely - we need more such civil intercourse on TV forums, so I have pleasure in responding to your polite request.

It's in Thai, but there are several photos.

The BB gun is conclusive (even in photos). The out-of-date walkie-talkie & other equipment are typical for security guards.

The article also states the name of the security company (Yod Tep Phatan Ltd) (with a photo) and their contract with Chula U to guard the empty properties whilst Chula are clearing the area for further development.

One comical reference therein is a photo of 1 red cap in the room, then another photo when the items were later displayed on a table outside in the street. The latter photo shows lots of red shirts (miraculously appearing) and even a (different) red Walls Ice-Cream hat, with a comment "Hey, I told you to bring red shirts, but I did not tell you to bring ice-cream caps", which is a reference to alleged "planting" of evidence.

The inference is
a) the room and (most of) the belongings/equipment belong to these Chula security guards
b ) the PDRC blackshirts "augmented" to the belongings by adding several red shirts and a Walls icecream cap (the only red items the PDRC guards were able to obtain at short notice)
c) there is no obvious link between this room/their owners and the bombing

? the turn out for the protests has diminished greatly- to the point where you've got maybe 100 people at Asoke, while other 'shut down' intersections were no more.

Perhaps you mean 100,000 at Asoke, maybe more.... open your eyes and stop living up to your pseudonym

unless you're living in a propaganda bubble, it's pretty well known the number of protesters reached laughable levels at times yesterday. 100,000? was that Suthep's count? lol

as to my nick- a drunk Thai was railing on about how superior Thai's are to foreigners and kept repeating that we're ALL 'idiot farang'. i found it amusing given the source. besides, all the clever nicks were already taken...

If my English were as poor as yours, I wouldn't be elevating my position online.

It beggars belief that some of posters continually accusing PDRC of committing acts of violence against themselves. It's absolutely laughable accusation. Why? Anyone who knows Bankokians knows well that they do not condone violence. Furthermore, Bangkokians are afraid of violence. They simply do not like it and stay away from it. Since violent acts started the numbers started dropping. A fact which is difficult to refute.

They are probably paid to deflect blame from their idols

It's doubtful the Shinawatre gov't will pursue the perpetrators diligently. Law enforcement is inept and highly subjective here in Thailand.

Why do they need to pursue anyone, they already know exactly who did it

I arrived BKK airport on Thursday 11am. There were only 6 or 8 immigration officers working and 2 to 3 people in each of the lines! These morons really know how to screw their economy during high season!

That's right. The PTP morons should resign. They never did a thing to protect tourists

Inside the deserted building, an assortment of war weapons was found in a room. Officers from the Army Ordnance Corps entered the building with TV camera crews and protester guards. In addition to the grenade safety pin, they found weapons, including unassembled parts of an M16 assault rifle, according to the pro-opposition Bluesky satellite-based television channel.

The M16 'assault rifle' was a BB gun. The Nation is certainly trying hard to make it appear as though the govt planned the attack to intimidate people (despite the fact protest numbers were falling), yet hasn't questioned why Akanat decided to change the route yesterday morning to go down the road where the attack took place (and then lied that he'd changed the route). I am not blaming either side because there isn't enough evidence for that, but any credible newspaper would have questions to ask about the suspicious goings on, not all of which point towards the government side as culpable.

The government definitely are behind all the attacks..... get your head out of your arse, people are dying. You can't support this.

I would think carrying people like they are doing in the pic would be quite harmful to the victims if they are really hurt.

Wow, that's some grenade! 36 casualties... more like a WMD. What nonsense.

Cretins like you should be barred. There is no place in society for people who come here to mock the dead and injured

Suthep did not hesitate to order troops to fire on Thais in 2010 and he does not care if protesters die in order for him to achieve his power grab now.

You keep harping on about "ordering"

One would think that after you have said it on here a million times you might have some proof?

Personally I think you're a liar.

Assuming this is true -and at this time of smoke and mirrors, who can say - it is truly tragic. another needless death. One wonders how a Phuket taxi driver funded himself to get to Bangkok and stay here for 5 days....if indeed he did, which he probably didn't. R.I.P and condolences to his family.

It is inconceivable that, if there were serious injuries at the scene, The Nation and the other journals would certainly publish pictures that would have the most shock effect. Over 20 people injured and not one drop of blood? Incredible. Literally.

Phuket minibus driver dies from Bangkok grenade blast injuries

The Phuket News

PHUKET: -- A Phuket-based minibus driver died early this morning (January 18) from injuries he sustained when anti-government protesters were attacked with a grenade yesterday.

A Phuket-based minibus driver died early this morning (January 18) from injuries he sustained when anti-government protesters were attacked with a grenade yesterday.

Prakong Choojan, 44, originally from Nakorn Sri Thammarat, but working as a minibus driver based at the Royal Paradise Hotel in Patong, drove up to Bangkok on Tuesday (January 14) to join the Shut Down Bangkok protests.

The following day, in one of his last posts on Facebook, he wrote, Going to try really hard but if we dont win this round Im not going back.

Yesterday he joined a march headed by protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban. As the marchers passed an abandoned building on Bunthat Tong Rd a grenade was tossed from the second floor of an empty building next to the road. A total of 37 people, including Mr Prakong, were injured.

Shrapnel from the grenade tore into Mr Prakongs chest. Thai Rat newspaper reported that he died in Ramathibodi Hospital at 1:30 this morning from acute renal failure after losing too much blood.

A niece of Mr Prakob, Lalintip Thongchuay, told The Phuket News this morning that the family expects his body to be returned to Phuket the day after tomorrow.

He is survived by his wife Thippayao two daughters aged 22 and 17 and seven-year-old son.

Mr Prakong is the ninth person to die since the Shut Down Bangkok protest began and dozens more have been injured. Explosives have been used in attacks on the homes of Mr Suthep, Democrat Party leaver Abhisit Vejjajiva and Bangkok Governor Sukhumphand Paribatra.

The Bangkok Post reported that, in a highly emotional speech after the attack, Mr Suthep said the grenade blast was the work of the government and called on the protesters to draw strength from it.

"The blood that spilt on the street is piercing my heart. What [the government] has done to the Thai people is cold-blooded. Let the pain remind us and give us strength to fight until we win," Mr Suthep told protesters at the Lumpini stage.

He denied he had been behind the grenade attack himself.

"I am not that kind [of person]. I don't kill my own supporters," he said.

there was a few people yesterday photgraphed leaking blood

i have no doubt that someone threw a grenade

buti wouldnt put it past suthep to have organised it himself to esclate things

who would use a grenade when they had assault rifles on the same rooftop

and claimed by suthesp mob ?

to miss someone by 30 metres with a grenade when you could have just shot them with a rifle

stinks of a publicity stunt

Based on the information shared on TVF to date, it seems relatively safe to say that the cache of red shirts and caps and whatever other equipment that was found in a room in a vacant building has nothing to do with the person(s) who are responsible for this incident. However, it is also relatively conclusive that a grenade exploded and that over thirty people were wounded and one person was killed. A tragic incident indeed. Has anyone found out if there were any CCTV cameras on this street?

By the way, I saw many pictures of injured people with blood soaked clothing. Is there really a need for war porn to document this tragedy? I'd say that there is enough blood lust going around on TVF without the need for pictures.

Yes, it was verified... there are BB boxes in the photo enclosed .. to the right of the Walls hat and under the guy with the white shirt.

A people putting together a serious arms cache would not bother with BB guns unless it was for bluff,,,,

The walls hat on the top when the initial rush of photographers came in the room with a pile of red items (the news reports say Police were excluded from the room).

the lower photo shows the items after being sorted and the logo is different on the red hat. I would bet that the manufacturer of both hats would be easily identifiable. Hats provided to Police in the South most likely would be supplied from an approved manufacturer that would also be traceable. Shame that Pantip is not in English..

Please don't kill suthep , let him rot in jail

That's right on the Thai Visa mentality. Support the bad guys (Jaturporn, Chalem, Thaksin, Arissman etc etc) and jail the good(ish) guys. Korn, Abhisit, Suthep. Perhaps Surin too.

And off course we see people who post such ridiculous notions as the protestors bombing themselves .......oh yes! That's logic. Farang logic!

Did you know that the protesters managed to enter the 'empty' building where the attack came from? They found a pile of weapons, including M-16s, radios, as well as sufficient evidence suggesting the attackers belonged to the same border ranger units used by your friend Thaksin during their street violence in 2010 that killed the 90 folk (some of these murders are being pinned on Abhisit etc) and left scores of buildings in flames.

There are also loads of red shirt mavericks ready to fight to the death for Thaksin. They are now rearing their ugly heads in what could be a fairly low key start to civil war. This is what Thaksin wants. He's got his black and red shirts nicely primed and there are a number of locations in the City where weapons have been stockpiled to use in case of (a) a military coup or (B) the ousting of Thaksin's proxy.

Those here who post support of this Government, calling it 'Democratic' (sic) have never explained how a Government, run by a cowardly and unelected runaway convict (not by the people directly voted into office) can be called 'legitimate'.

" About half an hour after the attack, the government's Centre for the Administration of Peace and Order warned members of the public and state officials against joining street protests organised by the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC).

"rage towards protesters"?...Really?...Trying to demonize an elected Govt. facing up to attempts to roll back Electoral Democracy certainly positions one's political outlook. One must remember what all of this is growing out of. The political rise of the country’s poor, long-silenced rural majority made Bangkok’s entrenched elite recoil in alarm....But, instead of learning to compete for the votes of Thailand’s rural poor, the country’s urban elite (including the powerful military) is seeking to delegitimize the Govts. which have been subsequently elected.......For much of her term in office, Yingluck garnered praise for her pragmatism and for seeking to ameliorate the antagonism of her opponents. ..What is happening in Thailand is an attempted nullification of democracy by the opposition and the country’s entrenched elite. Unable to compete successfully for votes, they now want to dilute Thai democracy in order to prevent the electorate from ever again choosing a government that goes against their will.......projecting totalitarianism onto a Govt. seeking to have an election and whitewashing those who don't is puzzling indeed.......Suggesting that this Govt. is anywhere close to the R'song coup-monger attack using the military is more than puzzling.....One must remember it is the leader of these protesters who is an alleged murderer awaiting trial.......Trying to turn this thing on its' head ridiculous.

I have never read a post that misunderstands Thai politics and the political situation to this gross extent. Fantasy land stuff, not a grain of reality in this post.

Several things still confuse me about this incident and need to be fully investigated. The PDRC entered the building believed to be the source of the grenade being thrown. I have not seen or heard any media accounts that detail that anyone actually saw the grenade before it exploded or the person who threw the grenade. If I am in error, please correct me with your sources. The route for the parade was changed at the last minute -- why? Was there any CCTV cameras on the street? If not, it would seem to be a major error by Suthep's security personnel to plan a parade on a route where security cameras could not record any untoward incidents. [No motive is saying this other than it was a blunder.] News reports say that the grenade was made in China. Who, in Thailand, police or military, uses such devices. Have the security guards whose ID's were discovered in a room in the vacant building along with a cache of red shirts and other material been interviewed/interrogated? If not, why not? Has the police or the military been able to identify any suspects? Have the police or military catalogued the items seized in the vacant room and made such a list available to the media? What, if any, forensic evidence has been gathered to date. Based on the examination of the available videos and the relative position of people injured, what does it indicate about the blast pattern of the grenade. Instead of jumping to conclusions about who may be responsible AND irrespective of our own ego and your beliefs about the relative intelligence of people who may disagree with your point of view, I think we could all serve a greater cause in seeing that there is an adequate and objective investigation of this incident.

You might think it's ridiculous, but it turned out we were right. This video clearly proves it:
