Military told to guard armaments against unauthorized use

BANGKOK, 24 January 2014 (NNT) – Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Thursday told the military to exercise caution in guarding its armaments, to prevent the weapons falling into the hands of those seeking to promote turmoil.

Speaking at the first Defense Council meeting of 2014, Ms. Yingluck, the Defense Minister, clarified the declaration of the Emergency Executive Decree enforcement over Greater Bangkok to the heads of the Army, Navy and Air Force and other military top brass.

After the meeting, Ms. Yingluck told reporters she called on the People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) leaders to have regard for personal rights, and that she would rather not see the group making announcements about it trying to capture certain individuals.

Colonel Thanathip Sawangsaeng, spokesperson for the Ministry of Defense, said the prime minister emphasized the issue of military personnel carrying weapons to important locations or into communities.

The aircraft carrier has been taken over by tourists as we speak. Souvenir hat anyone?

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Thursday told the military to exercise caution in guarding its armaments, to prevent the weapons falling into the hands of those seeking to promote turmoil.

Funny that, the greatest turmoil in recent history has been caused by none other than the family of the one issuing the cautionary warning.

Yeah, protect it against her own minions and supporters, like last time. All their deeds are coming back to haunt them.

It's a poor state of affairs when the "headmistress" has to remind the kids to watch their toys 'cos the baddies might get them...!

What a f****ked up place we live in.....even the military cannot protect themselves.

I think it is better she doesn't say anything.

It's a shame a woman has to tell the military what to do. Shows you what she thinks about the military.

It would have been better if she kept her mouth shut.....nothing but hot air comes out when she talks.

The PM is so wise...the military would have never known to guard their armaments unless the PM had mentioned this to them. Yes, so wise.

Shouldn't the caretaker Defence Minister have ensured, that keeping an eye on their shooty-bangs & equipment, was already a part of the military's standing-orders ? blink.png

Or has she only just woken-up to the need to do so ? facepalm.gif

Wow. The person in charge of the nation is having to tell the army to safeguard the nation's armaments. Very scary.

One of the first signs of maturity, we exhibit, as we grow up, is when we know to keep our opinion to ourselves, about things out of our field of knowledge. That is one of the reasons we refer to "learning something new, each day of the rest of our life"

This is a caretaker prime minister, seemly talking down to a military group who have learned quite a lot about Thai politics and politicans in the past decade or so. She on the other hand is either ad-libbing, taking instruction from her brother, or reading from a script written by some camp followers, who are also out of their area of expertise.

For the sake of Thailand the lady and this entire flock of vultures, should resolve themselves to the fact, they have nothing to contribute, to the demand of the Thai people, to reform and get rid of the parasites who live off of the sweat/work of the majority. Its time to take the back entrence away from responsibility, just as they have been doing for the past decade or more.

yes, comments like this should be a national security meeting with no press. From the sound of this article it looks like Thailand is headed for a seriously chaotic future.

Then there were tanks they commandeered from passive or 'water melon' soldiers they .

There was also the LPG tank transporter they hijacked and threatened to blow up in downtown Bangkok.

And they called it 'non-violence'.

Very silly coming from someone who knows only how to swing a handbag.

Thank ''your'' god there are no Nuclear weapons in LOS........w00t.gif

She tells military to safeguard their weapon because she is a defense minister!

Did she also tell her subordinates to safeguard the rice, because she chairs the rice committee? Look how far that get?

Very entertaining indeed to read how spin--sters' spin.

Judging from the way you shared your views, it seems that you have not begun the journey of majority. Caretaker PM made her warning based on security intelligence reports. It also shows she is in control contrary to all the spins.

It shows that she can't think!

And how difficult it would be for Thailand to start a nuclear energy program....the IAEA would never allow this country a facility.....

Suffice a small research reactor only.

LOS need not, but perhaps a big power ''might'' have stationed one here in the past. My point was nobody here knows what they are doing regarding anything and so my thought.

As this strange announcement is being made quite frequently by the Yingluck administration, one can only assume that there is a reason behind it. It's hard to imagine that they are concerned with the army's ability to protect it's own weapons. Could it be possible that the administration is trying to set up an advance narrative of blame if weapons of war are indeed used against the protesters, as they were last week ? As a senior officer of the Thai Navy revealed to the press a few days ago, if indeed Cambodian mercenaries are being smuggled in to deal with the protesters, is the administration trying to frame a narrative that would deflect from that ? As this story was revealed this week, the public is already very well aware of it. They can hardly just forget it.

If this woman does not have the support of the military, it is completely understandable. How could she be more insulting? Telling the country's military big wigs something that should be Military Strategy 101 -- "Don't let the enemy get your weapons."

And on top of that, it is coming from someone whose entire knowledge of things military could probably fit in half a thimble. I suspect the closest she's come to anything to do with armed services is buying camouflage-printed clothing.

If Thaksin is feeding her these types of lines to release to the press, he must be trying to get her in more and bigger trouble.

Firearms etc have gone ''missing'' from military bases whistling.gif , Why, how...?

This is NOT farangland.............

Seems telling those who ''should'' control stuff is the norm............coffee1.gif

Yes...sure, but regardless if it's only a tactic to distance herself from any illegal use or unauthorized distribution of military weapons, saving face is possibly the most important part of Thai culture, and making a statement like that equals to her saying that the generals, etc. don't know how to do their job. That was the real point of my post, but thanks for pushing me to elaborate.

Yeah, protect it against her own minions and supporters, like last time. All their deeds are coming back to haunt them.

Well to be fair, they did it last time around, so they know it can be done. Perhaps it's prudent to remind the military that the redshirts took weapons in 2010 and to be careful that the same doesn't happen now. Not that there has been any indication this time to worry, however it is prudent, even if a little humorous. :)
