Thai rubber sector outlook brightens

BANGKOK, 22 Feb 2014, (NNT) - Both the government and private sectors have indicated that the global price of natural rubber will begin to recover within the next 2-3 months.

Both sources agree that the political turmoil has no bearing on the local natural rubber price, while demand from world's largest economy, China, is rising.

According to the Association of Natural Rubber Producing Countries (ANRPC), the rubber output in various natural rubber producing countries has dropped thanks to the colder-than-usual weather conditions.

The ANRPC stated that cold weather had only slightly affected Thailand's natural rubber production, which had declined by as little as 5%.

Meanwhile, the Thai Rubber Association revealed that since para's prices in Thailand had plunged, local producers had been making an effort to sell para rubber stockpiles, nearly depleting the national stock. The Association reports only a small rise in demand would drive the price strongly.

The agency also indicated China, the world's biggest rubber consumer, is expected to increase rubber consumption to as much as 8.3 million tons this year. It predicts Thailand could increase its rubber exports by 11%.

Bank of Thailand says 2014 GDP might not have to be reduced

PNECO570222001000501_22022014_112552.jpg

BANGKOK, 22 February 2014 (NNT) - Director of the Bank of Thailand's Monetary Policy Department, Mrs. Roong Mallikamas, revealed that the Bank of Thailand is closely following the world economic situation, Thailand's economic situation, and the Thai political situation to determine whether the national GDP for 2014, with the previous forecast growth of 3%, will have to be adjusted.

Mrs. Roong admitted the National Economic and Social Development Board's forecast that the Thai economy will grow 2.9% is similar to the Monetary Policy Department's forecast of 3%.

She added that statistics show that the 2014 GDP will probably not be significantly adjusted because the economic forecast for this year is not only dependent on last year's performance. There are many factors to be considered, some of which have already changed. The Monetary Policy Department will consider these factors in an upcoming March 12 meeting.
