Why do people leave Thailand, why did you ?

Every guy I have ever known who has left Thailand, had no choice, they left because they were broke.

They all professed to hate Thailand or have had enough of Thailand, but when they had the money, they loved it.

A friend of mine hated Thailand, hated the Thais, ranted and raved about all the Farangs driving around in big 4x4's and riding big CC Motorbikes, who do they think they are, flash barstewards, Kin' posers etc etc, he had to leave Thailand because he was skint.

After a few years he got an inheritance when his Mother died, came back to Thailand, bought a Fortuner and a Harley, and miraculously, Thailand wasn't so bad after all.

Those that come here by choice seldom leave ( unless skint ) in my experience.

I can't answer that because I am still here. thumbsup.gif

Some frogs manage to jump out just before they reach a boil.

I suspect there are as many guys staying here because they're skint as there are guys leaving because they're skint.

The difference would be the opportunities they may or may not have "back home", and whether pride trumps the aversion to poverty.

In my observation those that leave have done so because maybe their work has moved them on.

Then for others the finances ran out because "mrs right", was in fact "mrs wrong" and she fleeced them.

Then you have the sold everything but didnt plan and the money didnt go as far as they thought, had to leave but long to return.

Then there are the bums, the drunk, chip on their shoulder running away to escape something or someone, those are generally the bar stool brigade bitching about everything while they got money, and when it runs out, its everyone's fault but there own.

But that's just my observation, others may vary.

In short, yes Thailand is great, but definitely not a place to be "foreign & broke" with no support mechanism.

Why do people leave Thailand, why did you ?

In my case to go for a short vacation to Vietnam.

People leave for their own reasons which vary as many in number as there are stars in the sky. Why did you leave your country????

went home for the first time in couple of years ,realised how shit it was there

and came back after a few days as its less shit here :D

I'm still here too but I have no use for a huge 4x4 or large CC motorbike. My Toyota Vios is good enough for me.

I used to like driving a larger car back in the UK. The 3 liter Jaguar had quite a bit of power but there's no way I'm paying the high prices for the imported cars in Thailand.

I just won't do it on principal. It's all tax and I hate paying any tax which I can avoid so no Jaguar, Mercedes or BMW for me.

Yes nearly all I've know have been money issues, finding they "can't" live within the teacher salary.

But some have been due to:

Close family member passing away.

Kids needing a decent education.

Needing expensive medical care.

Getting sick of the TGs and trying other places like Philippines or Cambodia.

And of course dying.

To get another 90 days.

Good one. !!!

Sent from my iPad using Thaivisa Connect Thailand

I leave to go on holiday, or on conference trips.

I think there are only a couple of reasons why I would leave Thaialnd. One would be for work, although I'm quite happy with that here, despite a few other offers. The second would be if it really goes tits up here, Id probably move out of the country. The third, I guess would be if I was skint. Had some tough times a few years back here in Thailand, and this is not a place to be with little money. I like my comforts too much and have no desire to live without what I would have back in the UK.

Never say never though.

I think the whole point of the OP was not necessarily the reasons why people leave. It's about people who leave with mouth wide open, bashing the Thais and Thailand, and insisting that it was someone else to blame for their utterly failed lives. We see a lot of that on TV. People who have nothing but negative things to say about Thailand almost always have issues in their lives, money being a main culprit. I tend to agree with the OP in this regard.

I have enough cash to stay, but as I got older I get more sensible.

I went of the booze, and eventually got tired of bar-girls.

Being single (and intending to stay that way), decided that LOS no longer has much to offer.

I really don't want to get tangled up with a "nice girl".

Is actually cheaper for me to live in Oz. I have a shack in the country, grow my own vegs,

get free medical, etc. I have a modest workshop so can pursue my hobbies and interests.

I find L.O.S. lots of fun, but too bloody noisy, with frightfully dangerous roads. I tend to get bored in LOS after a few months.

But I'll still visit LOS from time to time.

I am the same as Jack.

I gave up my retirement visa and returned to OZ.

I do not "bag" TL though (as other posters have mentioned) as it holds good memories for me.

I pop back there occasionally.

Several of my friends have returned to the States. After a few years of Cheap Living they

realized YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. Now they have reached Medicare Age and medical

treatment is not expensive, so much cleaner, and they felt safer and enjoyed returning to friends

and family.....as for me, I'm still enjoying Thailand, for the present time.

People just love to complain about everything and others, especially when they are down themselves.

It is always others that are at fault.

Yes, Thailand is not perfect, but a lot better then back home.

Heat

Pay

Schools

Humidity

Safety (road moreso, but this isnt exactly japan...)

Poor organisation.

Special price just for me!??!!?

I guess I'm the exception to your rule. I make a very decent amount of money here and thus materially, I couldn't be happier. The reason we'll be packing up and leaving is that I see no future for us (me and my husband) in this country.

We can't buy property or start our own business without going through some shady legal dealings. These to me are signs of protectionism and xenophobia that don't make me feel welcome.

There is little culture that would appeal to me (oh goody! even more Buddha images!). This is not a rant but a statement of fact. I'm not even suggesting that the Thais should somehow 'change' their cultural heritage because I don't like it. It's just incompatibility.

Most of all, though, it's about corruption and the strange disconnect the Thais seem to have about it. After a month of sitting at Asoke because the government is (gasp!) corrupt, the same people are well aware that tea money changes hands on every level of the government and under-the-table-money is a common business practice.

I left Thailand because the Thai wife wanted to come live in Oz.Get job earn big money. She come got job with other Thai girls who then coached her, we dont do things like look after husband anymore.Plus tell her I didn't earn enough money and she could do better than me.Result we are no more I withdrew my sponsership of her the result she has to get her sorry arse out of the country by the end of March. After all her friends told her immagration would not send her home.So if your Thai wife ever want's to go to your homeland forget it or dont let her mix with her own kind.As for Thai's and Thailand I still love the people ,food and the country and cant wait to have my arse sat on the plane going back.Ionly lived there for 3 years and that was way too short.I also think for most of us that would make a living in our homeland in say construction or maybe driving trucks or labouring wont have a chance in hell of getting a job in Thailand as opposed to the I.T. expert or the financial expert teacher or whatever.Which ends up no job no money go home maybe a bit bitter.Opposed to a succesful worker on a decent wage able to live there.once met a bloke up north who had overstayed like 5 years no money nothing living off the generosity of all the ex-pats in the area for food and drink. Not for me I'm afraid. Please excuse my grammer and spelling In advance as someone on here will allways remind me how dumb I am and I can never find the spellchecker.

For us it's all about the weather, when it gets cold at home(Midwest USA), we come to Thailand until it gets hot here then we return back to the States. We've been retired and coming to Thailand since 2001 for roughly 5 months each year. Been happily married to a great Thai wife and mother for 43 years. Life is good in both places. My only complaint about Thailand is the dangerous highways, crazy drivers.

Still working in farang land and have to leave Thailand for my j.o.b.

Ya, I found the medical care cleaner and cheaper in Thailand for what you get so I'm still here. I also felt safer to be 9000 miles away from my ex wife.

One of the reasons Im not as open and friendly with other expats anymore is that most of them move back, move on or pass away after a few years.

The people who were transferred here by their companies get new postings and leave.

The never satisfied, always seeking something new personalities get bored and move on to another place a few years, rinse and repeat.

The drunks either go broke and move home or die from any number of things.

The low paid teachers (english teachers at bad schools etc) get a better offer somewhere else or decide to go back home to make a better life.

The reformed sexpats mess up their marriages and either go home or go back to any number of dingy sex havens in Asia.

The reason the grass is greener on the other side of the fence is that there is more shit there.

" I just won't do it on principal " .

Actually you would need some principal to do it , although you might not do it on principle.

Funny ain't it ! Learn summat new every day...

Money was not an issue for me...I became tired of the daily routine...drinking...chasing women...fighting traffic...getting ripped off...being seen as a walking ATM machine...the language barrier...the corruption at every level...being portrayed in the media as moronic villains...immigration...banking...Thai politics...did I miss anything?

What I heard usually people leave for a cheaper country to live in like Lao, Philippines etc. Some move to Malaysia for better infrastructure and a family life. They do not find it safe for their children with that life style. Some as others say are broke. They were so smart to spend all their money as soon as they could on drinking etc. Someone like me I travel only to see other places as well and meet my old friend in other countries and then back to Thailand.

The truth.

I mostly like Thailand its good for working and living for me.

the only three reasons which make me considering moving back would be:

1. lack of good friends, most expats I met (no I dont go to any go go bars) but still are in someway nuts, crazy party people or cocky business people who brag all day about their "great" lives. I have good family and friends back home which makes it tempting sometimes.

2. visa issues, never having any real security for staying, lose your job than lose your visa

3. having kids, not planning for that now as I still have time but there is no way I would let my kids grow up in a messed up, corrupt society like this. also the educational system is not the way I want to have my kids educated, private schools are also no option since than they are mingled with those highflyers again :)
