The way the OP reads; same thing happened to his friend the following day and an insurance claim mentioned, appears to be deliberately written in such a way that makes the whole incident sound as this is made up as an insurance claim scam.

Unfortunately it doesn`t give this story much credibility, so who knows?

To say people shouldn't visit Thailand because this guy got robbed is about as smart as saying don't visit LA because there's gang violence and drive by shootings.

If the Dane actually treated this like any other big 13+ million city and not a package tour he would have been better off. Don't come here thinking its a playground.

Do tourists even have 'neighbors'?

Sometimes, it just gets exhausting going over all the scams, thefts, robberies, and assaults that are becoming more and more common here. Thai society seems much rougher and desperate than when I first came here a mere five years ago. It's all sort of depressing, actually. You. Can't. Trust. Anybody. (Or Anything) Here. It's a fundamentally dishonest society at just about every level.

all those traffic fines add up never mind tea money from bars ,casinos and brothels and street traders illegally on footpaths .....

Never take a tuk-tuk anywhere, scum of the earth and twice at least what a cab would cost.

You fool, thousands take tuk tuk;s every day with no problem, who are you to judge them ?

The likelihood of a Farang making a false claim on his insurance from a bogus incident is much more likely in my experience.
