Uttaradit at risk of landslides, quakes
The Sunday Nation

UTTARADIT: -- As well as being among 54 provinces most at risk of landslides, Uttaradit is also located on a faultline, which means that buildings higher than 15-storeys tall have to be earthquake proof, Worasart Apaipong, deputy chief of the Mineral Resources Department has said.

Worasart told a seminar in Uttaradit yesterday that on top of the risk of landslides, 60 per cent of the province faced the risk of earthquakes. Because of this a disaster-warning network has been set up to keep everybody, especially those living in high-risk zones, informed.

The agency will also conduct training workshops on dealing with natural disasters at other sub-districts this year.

Up to 22 provinces in Thailand have a 10-per-cent chance of being hit by a quake within a 50-year period because there are 14 groups of active faultlines.

Separately, Ranong Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office chief Chawalit Nithornrat said officials had drawn up a map of areas most at risk pinpointing 85 villages in five districts that face the risk of mild to moderate quakes from Ranong faultlines.

Seems extremely low odds. Earthquakes can and do happen just about anywhere and dozens of measurable, but not felt, ones happen every day across the world. Usually when they give a stat like this they say what size earthquake or at least say "strong".

I didn't realize there were that many fault lines in Thailand, however the presence of several fault lines in the north and across the border in Shan State of Myanmar mean that the northern provinces of Thailand are most vulnerable to earthquakes. I knew about the Mae Lao fault line in Phayao/Chiang Rai before the recent earthquake and the Si Sawat fault line in Kanchanaburi province, which I haven't heard of as causing any earthquakes in recent times. That particular fault line is only around 200-250km west of downtown Bangkok BTW.

I wonder why it is only buildings higher than 15 stories that have to be earthquake proof?

I hope another quake does not hit Thailand. I live in Phuket and the tsunami was a result of a quake as well.
