webfact
Thailand books final spot in Women’s World Cup HO CHI MINH CITY, 22 May 2014 (NNT) - Thailand's women's football team have made history by securing a spot in the next Women's World Cup after beating Vietnam 2-1 in Ho Chi Minh City. The Thai side has clinched the 5th qualifying spot for FIFA Women’s World Cup, which will be held in Canada next year, after defeating the host, Vietnam, with 2-1 on the scoreboard after the final whistle.Thailand’s two second-half goals were enough to see them advance despite a fruitless surge from the home team who scored a consolation goal to get the fans jumping off their feet. After the match, the coach of the Thai team said it was like a dream come true for them and that they had achieved their World Cup dream.Football Association of Thailand President Worawi Makudi earlier promised that the association would give the team 10 million baht if they made it to the World Cup finals.-- NNT 2014-05-

15Peter20
Excellent achievement! It's all very well giving the team a 10 mill incentive, but I wonder how that compares to the total amount spent on facilities and coaching. Probably quite a lot. Short-termism alive and well at the Thai FA!

thamteak
Thai men should follow in the footsteps of their women. And stop walking off the pitch refusing to play, when they don't agree with the ref? Thai football team walks off pitch and refuses to play after a decision doesn't go their way. Asking a bit much, mate.

Estrada
In the far right of the picture, is that Alan Partridge? //edit/well done ladies My niece is on the second row from the left hand side of the photo behind number 20. She has been paying for the Thai National team for many years and she has been all over the world with them. They always shave done better than the men's team but before they won the Sea Games in Myanmar last year they were still not getting the publicity they deserve. My niece even played for Sweden in a friendly earlier this year before they went to Japan for a month for a pre-season warm up. Most of the women in the Team are Toms.

draftvader
Awesome news for the nation at this time. Women's football is as exciting and dramatic as men's but there is still massive sexism in the game that stops some of the world's best players appearing in mainstream football (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanna_Ljungberg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maribel_Dom%C3%ADnguez). I wish Thailand all the best next year but fear that an encounter with the USA or Sweden will be all it takes for them to exit.
