Five Thai monks charged over sexual abuse of minors: police

BANGKOK, May 28, 2014 (AFP) - Thai police on Wednesday said they had charged five defrocked Buddhist abbots with sexually abusing eight boys at monasteries around the northern city of Chiang Mai.

The abuse was discovered after police rescued one boy from the abuse ring last year, police said, adding all the children involved were under 15 years of age.

"Four of the abbots volunteered to disrobe, but one denied the charges and was forcibly defrocked," Major General Prachuab Wongsuk, of the northern police region, told AFP.

He said police found alcohol and pornography during a search of living quarters at five monasteries.

Police believe the abbots were acting together and Prachuab predicted that more monks would be arrested soon.

Those charged face a maximum of 20 years in jail if convicted.

Monks in Thailand, where some 95 percent of the population are practising Buddhists, have been hit by a series of scandals, with local media reporting cases of drug-taking, drinking, gambling and visiting prostitutes.

In September, authorities seized nearly $800,000 worth of assets, including a Porsche and a Mercedes-Benz, from a monk who was defrocked for a controversial trip in a private jet and who was also accused of fathering a child by an underage girl a decade earlier.

I know catholics priests had bad press in recent time but buddhist monk are of a totally different league. Most probably because there are no real regulation regarding this monks. Some, who are covered with tatooes from head to toes look more like Yakuza than monks.

Any form of child molestation in any country, religion or society, should be vehemently opposed and offenders prosecuted, handed the full punishment available.

Your out of line and know nothing about the extent of the Catholic Priest scandal. The scandal broke first in New Mexico, where I live, the church had priest rehabilitation facility in Jemez, New Mexico were they sent there offending priest from the eastern US and other locations. After a few years of treatment the priest would be declared cured and then put into a church or school in New Mexico. In the late 80s and early90s over 100 men sued the church for damages due to sexual abuse by the cured priest. I personally know several of the men who were abused and they deserved every dime they received. There was never an admission from the church of wrong doing nor an effort to investigate wrong doing by there priest. One day while talking to a friend about this subject I said that this is only the tip of the ice berg as it has continued to play out we all know this for a fact. The real crime was the Vaticans attempt to cover the whole thing up.

Where is your defence against a huge amount of Catholic priests being arrested over the years, for assault on minors, and particularly young boys they lure into choirs and performing altarboy duties, only to have a cassock ripped off them and receive buggery?

There is no argument against education here. It is the history of quite often what lay behind the intent of the priesthood to open schools, especially for boys, or lure them into church functions.

Nobody, not even for a second has insulted your God, but you yourself are for sure angry at anybody having a whack at exposing abuse based upon religious hidden agenda concerning the Catholic church. Yes, they went from killing millions during the crusades to building schools and other means to control people / populations with their belief system that was ultimately was to increase the church's wealth. Certainly their a good people within all faiths but very naive to believe the Catholic Church is not motivated by power and money.

Catholic schools were built around the world not for the sole purpose of education, but more for the spread of Catholicism, in much the same way as they ban contraception, spread the word through sheer numbers. This is not unique to the Catholic Church though, but to every religion. This does not in any way excuse the abuse of the trust the general public put in these so called educated men of high order when they innocently conned into sending their children for a supposedly better education.

In reality, the vast, overwhelming majority of monks and teachers do nothing wrong. It is newsworthy because it is still rare ( or when authorities know about issues and do nothing to stop it).

It's sad that in many countries it has become extremely difficult to attract male students to train as primary teachers, partly due to the perception that there may be some ulterior motive involved. This leaves many kids, given the nature of modern families, without any male role model. Sad.

Don't care if its monks or priests, deal with them all the same way. 2 house bricks and their jacobs crackers in a sandwich!

people who use a cover like religion in which so many people put their trust and faith and abuse their position like this are the worst of the lot and imo do not have a place in this world. If 100% proven guilty, twist their holy necks...
