It's a shame nobody thought to do a traceroute during the outage. While a single trace might not be conclusive, a dozen or more from folks in various places and with assorted ISPs would be more revealing. Presently:

Line 11 is the Facebook server in Singapore.

I suppose one gateway also means one big single point of failure, which means, internet reliability is less assured than before in Thailand.

apologies metis, this should be inline now Thai military seeks Facebook, Google cooperation with censorship

Reuters) - Thailand's military junta will send officials to Singapore and Japan in coming days to seek tighter censorship of social media from Facebook, Google Inc and instant messenger service Line, a government spokesman said on Thursday. http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/05/29/us-thailand-politics-censorship-idUSKBN0E91FB20140529

Rather than censoring the internet, perhaps the government would consider eliminating the draconian laws on the books and move toward the modern age. If Thailand wants to be an economic success in today's world, more control of communication is certainly not going to take them in the right direction.

Thai authorities to build state-owned social network site

Mon, 02/06/2014 - 18:40 | by prachatai
The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) is proposing a plan to build a state-owned Facebook-like social networking site called Thailand Social Network.
interesting new developments on the social media issue

In China, the government has created an "invisible birdcage" internet where the top social media companies like Renren (none Government owned) have thrived and copied Facebook's features. I don't see a Thai government-owned one working however, so maybe Thailand should take a page from China's model if they plan on installing these tight controls.

I see the Daily Mail is blocked with a stern warning. Looks like it won't be long and news from outside will be limited by the single gateway. Most Thai folks I interact with know exactly what is going on, so I really fail to see the benefit any controls on the internet will provide. Interesting to note, one of my Thai friends recommended looking up articles by Andrew Marshall, and he is in the military.

Yeah, me too, but since it was generated by FB, it probably means FB is down, not that we are blocked from using it.
