May 30, 201411 yr I have been sending and receiving stuff from my Wife (in Surin, me in OZ) ... whereas phone calls have been problematic ...
May 30, 201411 yr It's a shame nobody thought to do a traceroute during the outage. While a single trace might not be conclusive, a dozen or more from folks in various places and with assorted ISPs would be more revealing. Presently: Tracing route to facebook.com [173.252.110.27] over a maximum of 30 hops: 1 6 ms 9 ms 10 ms 10.23.144.1 2 11 ms 10 ms 8 ms 10.92.227.241 3 12 ms 9 ms 9 ms 119-46-147-54.static.asianet.co.th [119.46.147.54] 4 8 ms 8 ms 8 ms 119-46-147-49.static.asianet.co.th [119.46.147.49] 5 11 ms 8 ms 11 ms 61-91-213-177.static.asianet.co.th [61.91.213.177] 6 10 ms 10 ms 12 ms 61-91-213-35.static.asianet.co.th [61.91.213.35] 7 11 ms 10 ms 16 ms 61-91-213-81.static.asianet.co.th [61.91.213.81] 8 11 ms 14 ms 15 ms TIG-Net242-49.trueintergateway.com [113.21.242.49] 9 42 ms * 44 ms TH-IDR-MTT1-26-202.trueintergateway.com [122.144.26.202] 10 40 ms 43 ms 38 ms SG-ICR-GS2-241-210.trueintergateway.com [113.21.241.210] 11 48 ms 44 ms 45 ms xe-7-1-1.pr01.sin1.tfbnw.net [103.4.96.29] 12 40 ms 46 ms 43 ms ae11.bb02.sin1.tfbnw.net [31.13.28.148] 13 276 ms 277 ms 273 ms be6.bb02.lax1.tfbnw.net [204.15.20.79] 14 289 ms * 274 ms ae13.bb02.atl1.tfbnw.net [31.13.28.111] 15 277 ms 275 ms 274 ms be26.bb01.frc3.tfbnw.net [31.13.27.118] 16 274 ms 272 ms 269 ms ae87.dr03.frc1.tfbnw.net [173.252.64.51] 17 * * * Request timed out. 18 * * * Request timed out. 19 273 ms 274 ms 272 ms edge-star-shv-13-frc1.facebook.com [173.252.110.27]Line 11 is the Facebook server in Singapore.
June 2, 201411 yr I suppose one gateway also means one big single point of failure, which means, internet reliability is less assured than before in Thailand.
June 2, 201411 yr apologies metis, this should be inline now Thai military seeks Facebook, Google cooperation with censorshipReuters) - Thailand's military junta will send officials to Singapore and Japan in coming days to seek tighter censorship of social media from Facebook, Google Inc and instant messenger service Line, a government spokesman said on Thursday. http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/05/29/us-thailand-politics-censorship-idUSKBN0E91FB20140529
June 3, 201411 yr Popular Post Rather than censoring the internet, perhaps the government would consider eliminating the draconian laws on the books and move toward the modern age. If Thailand wants to be an economic success in today's world, more control of communication is certainly not going to take them in the right direction.
June 3, 201411 yr Thai authorities to build state-owned social network site Mon, 02/06/2014 - 18:40 | by prachatai The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) is proposing a plan to build a state-owned Facebook-like social networking site called Thailand Social Network. http://prachatai.org/english/node/4076 interesting new developments on the social media issue
June 3, 201411 yr In China, the government has created an "invisible birdcage" internet where the top social media companies like Renren (none Government owned) have thrived and copied Facebook's features. I don't see a Thai government-owned one working however, so maybe Thailand should take a page from China's model if they plan on installing these tight controls.
June 3, 201411 yr I see the Daily Mail is blocked with a stern warning. Looks like it won't be long and news from outside will be limited by the single gateway. Most Thai folks I interact with know exactly what is going on, so I really fail to see the benefit any controls on the internet will provide. Interesting to note, one of my Thai friends recommended looking up articles by Andrew Marshall, and he is in the military.

June 3, 201411 yr Echoing one of my other posts in this thread:Google is building satellites to spread internet to the whole world Hopefully it won't be too much longer before governments don't get to control what people can say to each other.
