Flu claims seven in lower Northeast over five months
The Sunday Nation

BANGKOK: -- Almost 2,000 people had contracted seasonal flu in the lower Northeast - seven of whom died, the head of Office of Disease Prevention and Control 5 in Nakhon Ratchasima said yesterday.

Dr Theerawat Walaisathien said 1,919 people had been struck down from January 1 to June 6.

Nakhon Ratchasima has had 1,278 cases (seven deaths), Chaiyaphum 170 cases, Buri Ram 335 cases and Surin 136 cases.

The disease prevalence doubled compared to the same period last year when the figure for the four provinces was 987 (and no deaths), he said.

With the Public Health Ministry having already distributed flu vaccines to all medical facilities, it was expected that all main risk groups - small children, the elderly and those with chronic diseases - would be vaccinated by July, he added

To be honest 7 deaths over 5 months does not seem that many to me. That many people die every 3 hours in Thai road accidents.

United States:

The CDC relies on hospital data to estimate adult deaths at the end of the flu season, and it's too soon to obtain those figures, Jhung said. Adult flu deaths in the United States usually range from 35,000 to 40,000 a year.

The agency does have up-to-date records for children, however. So far this season, 96 children have died from flu. In 2009, when H1N1 first surfaced, 348 children died from influenza, according to the CDC.
