Large water park to open in Phuket next year

Some of the rides are now being erected on the 40-rai site.

PHUKET: -- By early next year the island will have a major new attraction for tourists and locals: Phuket Aquapark, a 40-rai water park near Bangwad Dam in Kathu.

The park’s Hungarian and Polish investors are aiming for 3,000 visitors a day to the 20-million-Euro (B800 million) project. The park will have pools and rides covering 6,000 square metres.

Certainly it will be open by next Songkran, says Levente Perjesi, the Hungarian director of Csenki Co, the Board of Investment-registered company behind the Aquapark project. “We would like Thai people to enjoy this Thai celebration [at the park].”

There were noises about the water park some years ago, then all went quiet.

Mr Perjesi told The Phuket News, “We started the idea in 2009 but we had to suspend it because of political and financial problems. We restarted in June this year.

“The project will offer a wide variety of attractions, with more than 20 ultimate water rides and six pools.”

Components of rides for the water park are piled all over the landscape waiting to be assembled. The slides are manufactured by Polin of Turkey, which has been involved in some 2,500 water parks in 90 countries.

The site for the park was chosen partly because of its proximity to the Bangwad reservoir. The park will need large amounts of water.

However, recycling will mean that Phuket Aquapark (a working name – by the time it opens the facility may have a different name) takes the least possible toll on water resources and the local environment, Mr Perjesi says.

“Our pool technology and waste water system are from Hungary and are environmentally friendly. These will be up and running by the end of this year.”

“Our main goal is to bring some new excitement to the island,” Mr Perjesi says, “because there is a huge demand from tourists and also from local residents.

“There is still room in the market to provide different kinds of recreational activities here.

“All of us who work on the project are very excited to be creating a new [attraction] for Phuket. And it will also create more than 150 job opportunities for Thai people.”

Like Pattaya, cannot understand why you need a waterpark when you located near the ocean?

Could see the value of one in Bangkok.

Completely different concept. You can't ride a loopy slidey thing into the sea, can you? It's a theme park, not a swimming pool.

Is this on the road/soi going up to Bang Wad, or is it over by the golf course? Whatever happened to the water park that was supposed to go in next to the road going over the hill from Kathu to Patong?

I can appreciate that. Let's wait and see what the prices are to see if others can appreciate it or will it become a white elephant that uses up a bunch of resources.

Some will call it a tourist attraction I guess...

Turn right up a narrow soi next to the concrete plant on the road to the dam.

Water parks are great fun and should be welcomed if done right.

Totally agree - i think its a fantastic idea and will draw a lot of people. Excellent location too.

"Our pool technology and waste water system are from Hungary" Is Hungary some kind of technical country of excellence or something? It certainly wasn't when I was last there! I like the way it's used a selling point , "powered by Hungarian technology" wooo-hoooo! Let's form an orderly queue and get down there!

Water parks are great fun for all ages, even some miserable old farts, Phuket being a tourist island makes it viable, especially if the jet ski's get axed, if every local and tourist went one time they are sure to make a lot of money, good luck to them.

I never get down to that part of the island, but I've heard about the reservoir up there. Forgive me for being ignorant of the facts, but at what height is that reservoir? More than 80 metres??

Aparently the one called Cartoon Network Amazonein, Bang Saray near Pattaya, is amazing and I beleive the technology there is all from Turkey, so whats wrong with countries other than the big 4 or 5 technology countries doing advanced stuff?

If you try Google you will find that Hungary does put quite an emphasis on technology compared to others. Apparently Hungarians have won 18 Nobel prizes.

Cool, that's 17 more than all the Islamic states added together!!

What makes you believe the technology is from Turkey for his park which is a Cartoon Network park affiliated with Turner Broadcasting if I recall?

This was also an idea that Tom McNamara ,RiP , from Baan Rim Paa , had worked on with the owners of the Pirates Cove Miniature Golf Course back in the 90s ! I remember seeing plans and drawings of rides for the park. I forget why it never happened.

There was an old saying about Phuket back then: How to make a Million $ in Phuket , come with 2 !

I wish the Hungarians much good luck , I still believe only Duty Free status and Legalized Gambling may be the only way to save Phuket from more eyesores!

The kids go to the water park and Mom & Dad go to the Casino to lose the kids College fund !

You would be amazed if you know how many things the hungarians figured out but most of it they did outside of the country because the unfortunate circumstances...

just to name a few:

Helicopter, Vitamin-C, Water turbine, Soda, Dynamo, Color television, Telephone exchange, Automatic exposure camera, Elevator, etc...

Kiss 's Gene Simmons is of Hungarian descent and David & Mark Knoffler of Dire Straits.Just to name a few. Hungarians were also very prominent in the Arts & Entertainment Industry. My favorite Vampire of all-time Bela Lugosi , one of the greatest actors of all time Peter Lorre. Michael Curtiz who directed my Favorite Movie of all-time CASABLANCA.

I think why people may not realize how much influence Hungarians have been part of in this world , may be that many were changing

their names ,like Tony Curtis the Actor and the Founder of the FOX Studios had changed their names!

Indeed , they really did have a big influence on Technology.

There is a new TV Series on now called MANHATTAN , the story of the scientists who helped build the Atomic Bomb.

It portrays what their life was like , living at the housing and development complex , during World War 2 !

They "figured out" that quite well, after the fall of The Soviet Union.

I am certainly looking forward to it.
I love taking the family over to Bang Wad dam.
We have many picnics there and now, there'll be more reason to go.
I too hope it's not as expensive as that one up on the northern tip of the island.

Cheers to the Hungarian!

No water shortage on Phuket these days I guess?

Most of the water will be cleaned and recirculated.

Any loss of water due to leakage, evaporation, etc. will more than be made up for by all the kids pissing in the pools.

Granvil was of Hungarian descent, or so he was led to believe.
