EXACTLY IT! and with no one i knew and no hotel reservation it was a trip!!

First visit was in early January 2009, arrived one day after completing a 1-year military service. I traveled with a friend of mine who also had never been to Asia before.

Arrived in the morning, around 8-9am at Suvarnabhumi Airport. We had booked rooms at a hotel on Khaosan road, recommended by a friend. OFF WE GO! Got a ripoff cab from the airport to KSR, cabbie asked for 1400thb and we "bargained" down to 1000thb (hah!).

Arrived at Khaosan road after what felt like a very dangerous taxi ride, I thought the driver was absolutely mad and was thinking at times that "this might be it".

The sun was shining strong on our pale skin, it was still early so most vendors were closed, very few people on KSR. However as we were obvious first-time tourists carrying large luggage the few touts came to us trying to sell their stuff while we tried to find the hotel. Our hotel was in the middle of Khaosan road, took a while to find it, was already drenched in sweat from carrying a 20kg suitcase around.

Checked in, was surprised to see how bad the room was compared to the ad. No big deal, we felt it was still ok since the room was just 500thb.

After settling into our rooms we went for a walk around the area, felt very misplaced, everything was very difficult, getting a sim-card from 7-11, the touts, the jetlag, the heat. I remember thinking how badly I wanted to go to Phuket already, but our flight wouldn't be for another 5 nights.

Then a friend of ours that was an exchange student at BU came to visit us. This helped a lot! We had a beer and some food, went to MBK, then JJ-market, and then to get my first ever massage (not the naughty kind) at a place near Phrom Phong BTS. After this we were completely dead and went back to KSR for some sleep.

That was about it. I can honestly say that I hated Thailand the first few days. Since that trip, only 5 years ago, I've spent about 24 months in Thailand in total.

In 1985, as Engineering graduates, my dear friend Dr Roy W and I stopped in Thailand for 1 month en-route to the UK via Nepal, Africa etc. We took 11 months to get there. One of us went on to become a much respected medical specialist. The other one stayed with Engineering and eventually married a Thai and lived happily ever after.

I have a complete (basic) diary of our travels if anyone is interested.

We went to the post office to make phone calls and collect mail. We bought travellers cheques from American Express and changed them at the bank (there were no "bureau de change" in Thailand, or ATM). We woke up at 5am, as apposed to going to bed at 5am. For some reason, we seemed to do a hell of a lot of walking/ hitch-hiking. Ladies would ask us quietly if we wanted a "vegemite sandwich", instead of shouting "massage, massage" as we walked by. Taxis on Phuket stopped at 6pm. We fashioned a speargun from bamboo and reinforcing rod from a construction site to hunt crayfish....

Memories.

We had our "kodachome 64" slides developed at the nearest "photo-express', and picked them up 3 days later. There was no bottled water, we all carried a film canister of chlorine powder to sterilize our water..

The exchange rate was 14 baht to the dollar, variable daily. Before it was linked directly to the dollar....

14 bhat to the dollar? I'm curious. When might this have been?

14 baht to the Australian dollar, which was around 60/ 70 cents to the US dollar. That puts it around twenty something baht to the US dollar. I have no idea why, am quoting directly from my diary.

Flew in from the Philippines. It was end of April 1993. Was already adjusted to Asia from working on Korea, Philippines Taiwan etc. My flight got in around 4-5pm got picked up by our local rep (a thai guy) who got me to my hotel. He came back picked me up around 9pm and off to Patpong for the evening. I ended up with a sweet young thing, much better than the Philippines.

Spent two nights in Bangkok and then down to rayong for two weeks. On the weekends I would go to Pattaya with some other foreign engineers and our company Rep.

Always had a great time in Pattaya, nowhere near as big as it is now. Much safer too. Used to get a 3hr massage for 120 baht.

Always had my Rep with me so translation was never an issue and was learning new words all the time so never really had the communication issue.

Exchange rate was 25B to the USD so Thailand was not really cheap but not too expensive. I ended up coming back to Thailand 2-3 times a year for work.

Late 97 when the crash happened is when Thailand started to be cheap due to great exchange rates. Ended up moving to Thailand in 1998.

@ kinmaew, same thing with the smell at Don Muean airport, love that smell, also you find the same smell in older hotels in Asia that and the smell of

sun silk shampoo.

My first day here was probably like most western men. Arrived in Pattaya by bus and within minutes I was in the arms of an exotic beauty. A kid in a chocolate factory would be close. It took years for that novelty to wear off!!!

On a more serious note, I had been a traveller all my life and yet within 48 hours of being here, that desire to travel disappeared. The people were somehow different and I soon realised that Buddhism made them special. I knew Thailand was for me so I went south and lived in the jungle for a year to get a feel of the culture / language.

Thirty four years later I am still as much in love with the country as I was then. I stopped visiting the chocolate factory some years ago but have many fond memories (some best forgotten) and if I never go again, I can live with those memories.

I have seen some things in 34 years and only hope I have a few more left!

January 2011. Flew into Bangkok with my girlfriend I met in Canada. She's Thai and we were gonna meet the parents. They had a minivan driver waiting and we went on down to Pattaya. We had lunch on the Ocean at some restaurant there. Then we proceeded to the Tiffany's Play. World Famous play I hear. I had wondered to myself why I should be there and they were talking in Thai mostly. Well, at least I had some good looking girls to watch for an hour or two...or so I thought. A couple minutes into the show my girlfriend told me the production was 100% male. This was particularly funny because the guys back at work had bugged me for months to watch out for the Ladyboys. I was thinking what are the odds? I'm coming with my girlfriend to meet her parents but first night we were at the World Famous Tiffany's play...funny world.

Then after the show her father suggested driving through the red light district. I think it was Sukhumvit or right close to the Walking Street. It was about a mile long I figured and just packed with people. Some you could tell were negotiating the bar fine I'd think...

Then it was back to the resort to go to bed in the traditional Thai house. The door to its balcony had fallen out earlier in the day thanks to the termites that had eaten around the hinges...Fun times.

OK< that explains it. Your OP just said "dollar" so I wrongly assumed the US dollar.

Back in 2005, I had 8 weeks annual leave... I was about half way through the leave and decided I wanted to head somewhere O/S... I more or less closed my eyes and pointed to a place on the map... It happened to be Thailand. I did a bit of research and decided I would head up to Phuket, for a 10 day sojourn.

Like most, I remember arriving at the airport.... thru immigration and then out of the terminal.... it was about 22:00 but the heat was amazing, particularly after being in A/C for 9 hours. The noise, the touts, the chaos that is Phuket Airport outside the arrival hall. I grabbed a taxi and headed for my hotel, and thankfully the guy knew where to go. SSS and it is about midnight and I'm not tired.. So I decide to head out and find a drink. I was staying on Beach Road, towards the southern end.

So I walk north... take a right at Soi Kebsup and man, did my eyes open up!! The cat calls, the grabbing was amazing, and if I am honest, just a wee bit intimidating. So I made it thru Kebsup and made it to Rat U Thit.... and wandered along until I got to Bangla and walked down there... The most amazing looking women lined the street, but sadly a lot of them were blokes. I made my way down to a soi that was playing music that you would probably find in my iPod these days 55... So I headed in there for a drink.. Soi Eric was the soi, and it was a job in it's self, just to run the gauntlet of the women, trying to entice you into their bar, to get to where you wanted to go...

I found a quietish bar, and sat down and ordered my first drink. Of Course, a beautiful young woman is sitting beside me in no time. Her English is rudimentary at best, but we get on great... I stay there till closing... I pay my bin and get up to leave, when, she doesn't ask, she tells me she is coming with me... I thought why not?? She stayed with me for the entire time I was there, and was fantastic.... After a couple of trips, she left working the bar and opened her own business in BKK, and has been there ever since... And nine years later, she is still with me... I guess I got extraordinarily lucky in that department. There have been no sick buffalo, no 3 gazillion baht lean to's.. Nothing like that. She was and is a decent loving woman.... I still cherish my first night in Thailand!!! It certainly changed my life.... for the better.

Wow.You picked up a girl in a bar on your first night in Thailand and married her!!You wasted no time did you!! Was it included in the price of the flight or something!!laugh.png

Water off a duck's back mate.... but a nice thought just the same.

I am pretty sure not too many of us have lily white pasts... if you consider what she did as a negative.... I actually don't... She did what she did, because that was the only way she could see her way clear at the time, to make a bit of a life for her family. Her call, as they say Up2 Her.... I won't go into the "why's" but if you had been in her shoes, at the time she entered the bar scene, then maybe, you may very well have done much the same...I have never judged her and nor has she judged me... I was certainly no angel.

When I go to Phuket, she won't come.... Her reasoning is, that, that part of her life is over and she doesn't want to go back.... Kinda puts a lie to the old boring oft repeated cliche "You can take the girl out of the bar..... bullsh1t bullsh1t bullsh1t".... Usually recited by people who have not taken the time to get to know someone, who has worked bar, and been burned by a less than honest woman.... She will however travel to any other part of Thailand...

So, she is no Hi So, but just a genuine 43 yo woman, who has decided to make a life with me, and for that I am thankful... But she does drive a small 1 Series Beamer, that she has bought for herself. I drive an old Honda 5555... Only a small thing, but she is very proud of it.. And I think a great achievement after years of growing her business... she deserved it...

So those who want to knock X Bar Girls.... Go your hardest.. U are either speaking from bitterness or ignorance, because you are casting a wide net when, really, people are individuals no matter how they make money...

Well as I tried to explain, I was actually complimenting you for not giving a toss if others knew her past.

He has already explained he doesn't need a pat on the back from you or anyone else for that matter.

Nice to see two people who appreciate each other.

Actually I am quite suprised at CH complimenting someone, normally his posts are full of angry little boy type comments

so you never know CH may actually be growing up ...thumbsup.gif

2002.

Messy divorce after 18 years of marriage. Aged 44. Heartbroken.

I was advised, by a friend, to get myself to Pattaya and sort myself out.

Arrived at BKK and got into a cab.

Knackered and jet-lagged but still with my wits about me and fearful of being kidnapped the taxi driver asked me to roll down the window and take a smoke ("he's trying to make me too comfortable", I decided).

The taxi driver then actually put the car heater on ("he wants me to fall asleep", I reckoned - and I was not too far from complying as I was so exhausted).

After an hour of me fighting sleep he pulled into a service station and suggested I use the toilets and get some air ("he's after my suitcase" I thought).

He filled the car up and then went for a smoke. I could see him in the distance so figured it was safe to get out of the cab and have a smoke, myself.

Got out of the car and BAM!!! The heat from the sun was like being hit over the head with a hot frying pan. I'd never experienced anything like it. It wasn't the heater he had switched on, it was the fan (his cab had no aircon) and he had asked me to open the window and have a ciggie in order to get some sort of draft of fast-moving air through the cab. He had been trying to make me comfortable, not rob me, all along.

Arrived Pattaya and checked into Sabai Lodge on Soi 2.

Got a call from a friend already in Pattaya and went for a drink with him and his Thai girlfriend. Was also introduced to the most beautiful creature I have ever met. Her body was perfect. Her face was perfect. Her voice was perfect and her manners and femininity were perfect. But she was a he. Still the most perfect specimen of a female form I have ever seen to date.

We went for some drinks, then onto a meal, then onto some more drinks, then onto Walking Street and Peppermint Agogo where I was mesmerised by two totally stark naked girls, less than half my age, playing catch with a volleyball between them in a glass cage. Have I died and gone to heaven??

I was told that the ladyboy (who I was getting on famously with cuz I have no hangups about such things - each to his own) "liked" me and could be mine for the night for 10,000Bt. i laughed and declined. Later the price dropped to 5,000Bt and then to 2,000Bt. Eventually I was told that because s(h)e fancied me, we could have some long-time fun for no money at all. I declined (this was all getting a teensy-weensy bit too much for me, on my first day).

I went back to my hotel alone on, not just my first night in Thailand but also my first night in Pattaya. Not sure whether to be proud of or ashamed of that.

Interesting Posts... Everything seems to revolve around Prostitutes ???

Yeah found it quite odd as well. Seems that most people obviously do come here for that.

My first time to Thailand didn't involve hookers. Neither did any of my other trips (must have been 5 or 6 times now) funnily enough.

I've never been to anywhere else in the world where it's so easy to bed cute girls.

First time was about 7 years ago. Was my first time outside of Europe. Me and my dad did a quick 2 week trip BKK > Siem Reap > Saigon > Phuket.

Arrived in BKK jetlagged, exhausted, and BA had lost our bags.

I hated it.

Our hotel was in Soi 4. We had no idea before arriving what Soi 4 was like.

Such a culture shock for me.

The streets were filthy. Rubbish everywhere. Rats and cockroaches. Busy. Pollution. Noise. Hookers and neon lights in Soi 4.

It was Xmas Eve too.

I couldn't wait to leave.

Didn't rate Phuket much either. The hotel we stayed in was miles away from anywhere with it's own private beach and nothing going on. One night we went to Patong and really didn't like that either.

Didn't think I'd ever want to go back to Thailand.

Then a few years later I was in Australia and decided after 6 months I'd had enough of the place.

Flew in Singapore to travel round SE Asia. Was considering just skipping Thailand.

But ended up back in BKK, this time with a good mate, met some locals who showed us a different side of the city and I fell in love with the place.

Have since spent a few extended duration's of 4-6 months and 'lived' there for 1 year.

One of the best cities in the world.

Would be interested to learn more about the "different side of the city" as I'm sure TAT would be, too.

What's so different about it? Where/how do the rest of us find it?

Does it involve the hookers you appear to frown upon?

Maybe it's a holistic side to Bangkok I've yet to unearth.

Genuinely interested to learn from you.
