BANGKOK, Sept 27 -- After learning that the interim Thai government was determined to march towards a sustainable democratic system, Forbes Media LLC has decided to organise the 2014 ‘Forbes Asia’s Best Under a Billion Awards Ceremony and Dinner’ (BuB) in the kingdom.

Forbes Media -- publisher of Forbes business magazine -- has decided to hold the event after seeing that the political situation has returned to normal in Thailand, while the Thai government is also undertaking reforms as promised earlier.

During the upcoming BuB, it will present awards to 200 small- and medium-sized enterprises which are considered to have great economic influence in the Asia-Pacific region.

From this total, nine Thai firms have been selected to receive an award.

In another development, Steve Forbes and Christopher Forbes, chairman and vice chairman respectively of Forbes Media, on Thursday held talks with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Gen Tanasak Patimapragorn in New York.

Both sides conferred on ways to strengthen ties and cooperation while senior executives of Forbes were confident in the strong Thai economy and on Thailand being the gateway to the Association of the Southeast Asian Nations.

Gen Tanasak is currently attending the 69th UN General Assembly session in New York. (MCOT online news)

There must be a lot of freebies to convince the organizer to set up the event in Thailand. It's another form of press promotion.

The previous years awards ceremony was held in Singapore and was sponsored by UPS and Societe Generale Private Banking. This years ceremony (to be held on Bangkok) is sponsored by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Nuff said.

Way of the world, rightly or wrongly.

Wonder if they chatted about Thaksin's Forbes' interview where he bragged about how much money his sister's government had sent to him; and how the family fortune had grown an incredible 450% in very challenging economic conditions during the period his sister's government were in power. Maybe he will be one of the contenders for an award with that kind of economic performance?

I think you missed the point but never mind. Believe what you want to believe if it makes you happy.

"Happiness is a fab4" ?

Anyway I doubt the "Thaksin billions" will be part of the cerimoney unless to demonstrate to the 200 small- and medium-sized enterprises how to grow into 'bigger enterprises'.

In October 2012 Thaksin gave an interview which somehow seemed to show the wishful thinking attitude and accounting methods which are really admired in the West

"But now the rice price went up to 600 USD per ton–50 percent increase. So our stock has more value now. If you were to dump it, yes you can sell it faster but you’ll lose a lot of money. In Thailand, we help the farmers. It looks like you lost money in the left pocket but you are not losing money. 400 billion baht, if we turned around, we collect 7%, 27 billion already. But at least the money will come back three times. Because the poor when they received the money they spend. So at least 3 times you got back. So you lost in your left pocket 70 billion but you gained 81 billion in the right pocket. So in the end of the day, it’s about the economy and about the well being of the poor."

It would seem that all this above suspicions as the USA really frowns upon bribery. Ask the Thai lady who was involved in organising glamorous events in Thailand.

I think you avoided the point, more like it. Baerboxer did not miss anything, he nailed it and the truth does hurt. Especially the bit regarding the family fortune growing 450%. Not a bit surprised you sidestepped that one. clap2.gif

Are you just upset, or do you think any I wrote can possibly be off topic ?

The Forbes organization stands for two things: money and old-school right-wing politics (we're talking Cold War era), in that order. They are also big on promoting traditional family values.

They love Singapore. Lee Quan Yew still offers up an occasional column. Nostalgia for the days when the threat of the Domino Theory propelled Western involvement in SEA. The good old days.
