webfact
What's the big deal about our fleet of warships: RussiaDavid WroeNational security correspondentMELBOURNE: -- Russia insists there is no aggression in its surprise move of sending warships close to Australia before the G20 meeting, saying it is simply keeping its navy fit and ready.A spokesman for the Russian embassy in Canberra, Maxim Raku, said the move was "not directly related to Australia" but was rather a routine naval exercise."We need our fleet to be in good shape because we need stability in the world and there are few nations that can provide that security for world peace," he said.He said the four ships, which include a powerful cruiser and a destroyer, would remain in international waters. This was why Moscow did not directly inform the Australian government in advance, he said."We really don't break any rules, we stick to international law, so why should we be seen as a danger?" he said. "Nobody wants the conflict."Mr Raku said Russia had interests in the southern hemisphere, even citing its global warming research facilities in Antarctica as a reason why it needed to demonstrate its reach far from Russian territory.Full story: http://www.theage.com.au/federal-politics/political-news/whats-the-big-deal-about-our-fleet-of-warships-russia-20141113-11lsmw.html-- The Age 2014-11-13

Popular Post ABCer
Australia should not worry about military aggression from Russia. 1. The terrain is inhospitable. 2. The population is hostile. 3. To overrun Australia Russians have first to go across China. I think recently Russians took interest in solving MH flights mystery. Maybe they want to join in a dive? Popular Post neverdie
LOL. I hope their ships are more modern than their vintage planes. If they wanted to sit off the G20, they're about 2000km's south of where they need to be. They can take Melbourne, nobody likes Victorians anyway !

The fact that Tony Abbott was threatening to 'shirt front' Putin when he went to Australia doesn't have anything to do with it then? That is the kind of childish, petulant thing that Putin is capable of.

Invite the Russian navy boyz to dock for a cold one Ask 'em what they did to get this punishment assignment So much for the comment above this is just routine? It has everything to do with face and the comments the Australian PM made a few weeks ago. Nothing to do with world peace. Just the opposite.

jcisco
Does anyone know the names of the vessels in the detachment, would be interesting to see what Russian force projection amounts too. Surely a shadow of the former soviet union, if it's only a handful of small vessels.
