German Man Brutally Attacked By 'Koh Tao Copycats'

Two 18-year-old suspects accused of brutally beating a German man in Udon Thani, 16 Nov 2014.

UDON THANI: -- A 25-year-old German man was admitted to the ICU after he was allegedly attacked by drunk teenagers in Udon Thani who wanted to imitate the brutal murder of two Briton tourists on Koh Tao island in September.

Police say the German man was sitting with two Thai friends near a park in Udon Thani's Muang District in the early morning of 15 November when three Thai teenagers suddenly attacked him with a garden hoe.

The man is now being treated for severe injuries in the ICU at Udon Thani Hospital. Medical workers say he suffered wounds on his face and skull that required immediate operation. According to a doctor at the hospital, there's only "50-50" percent chance that he will survive.

The attack also left one of the German's friends with a broken arm, police say.

Police have arrested three suspects, two 18-year-olds and one 17-year-old, in connection with the crime.

Pol.Col. Surin Chaichomphu, deputy commander of Udon Thani Police, announced the arrests of the two men, named Thanakorn Khusuwan and Surachet Sripolmuang, at the press conference yesterday. The third suspect, nicknamed Wuth, was not present at the press conference because he is a minor.

According to Pol.Col. Surin, both men confessed to assaulting the German man.

No doubt the perpetrators though they would go free just like the actual criminals on Kao Tao.

I hope the German gentleman recovers soon and doesn't die.

The little rascals have way too much free time to set around drinking and planning assults on fellow man. Use them as fish bait and target practice while towed behind a speed boat over the coral reefs.

This is very upsetting...particularly to my wife and I. We spent many mornings in that park...just before sunrise. In the 3 years that we lived there, we went every day, and saw nothing like this. There was a gruesome murder of a bar owner by his own staff, at his house...but not random violence at the park.

Police and military are helpless against this kind of violence.

I know it sounds bad....because it is.

Are they sure they were Thai teenagers?

Maybe it is the translation but the police passing it off as a 'typical case of youthful recklessness ' when the victim only has a 50 percent chance of survival seems a bit of an understatement.

They should have done it to teach other.

If they were gang members...you can bet that many others, including these pinheads, were talking about this/possibly planning this.. It just might become prerequisite to smash a tourist to bits to prove you are "bad" enough to belong to a gang. I hope they get to the root...because Udon does not deserve to become a cesspit.

i used to be a very early morning walker at the park and there was always lots of teenagers, some very young looking, around including school nights which raises the obvious question if the parents knew or even cared ?

Especially on the weekends there was a lot of noise from various sources, motorcycles everywhere and the occasional minor drama.

The police must have known it was one of the local hangouts but never any checks.

After years and years of Thai authorities being soft on crimes against foreigners I'm not surprised by anything anymore unfortunately. It's about time the RTP/CPT made an example of someone for this. A few executions would certainly get the message across that violent crimes against foreign visitors is not to be tolerated.

A park in Udon early morning I thought would be one of the safest places in Thailand, I'm beginning to feel nowhere is safe. Very sad hope this poor man recovers, no one deserves this.

It is now time for embassies to start thinking about evacuation plans for their nationals from this country.

Madame billionaire tourism ministress has got her work cut out to arrange a record breaking high season this year. Were these kids training for for the Thai youth ambassadors who are going to guide foreign tourists upcountry. What about the electronic bracelets to tag tourists so they know who they were when they have been murdered.

Seems a lot of ooop north villages have too many sitting around doing nothing, seems many of the men spend all day drinking same with the teenagers..................hang on I thought "No Thai person could do this"

Absolutely ghastly. Even with everything else that goes on here, this is the first time I have really questioned my future safety. A completely senseless attack. My heart goes out to this poor man and his loved ones.

I beleive this might be an example of sarcasm?

Because it has been alleged 2 Burmese have been wrongly accused of the Koh Tao murders, in case you weren't paying attention.

Thai's couldn't do this.. are we sure this isn't a suicide attempt?
