expatsupreme Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 I calculated that is is useless for me to rent a motorbike for 3000 per month. I can buy a new bike in 5 months for that money. 15000 bht you get a used scooter anyway. But where to keep it when you are away from Thailand? And do you need to remove the licence plates, do they expire? Also I have motorbike licence in Europe, so I just bring international licence with me and that will suffice?
brfsa2 Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 It depends how long you are away. I would not let a bike sitting still for more than 6 months. which will likely need new a battery. better just to sell it and get a new model when you back.
Shurup Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 ON what sort of visa are you and how long are your trips here?
seedy Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 My bikes and car sit on my carport when I am away. 6 months here 6 months work. But this will change shortly. Fill tank with fuel - gasahol fine. I use Max 44 to stop the phase separation, and Stabil when I fill the tank before storage. Put a Ctek on each, and jump on the bird. On return, start 'em up and drive away. Never a problem. The GF keeps the car aired out to prevent mold forming.
Shurup Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 If the OP is on a tourist visa, all the storage suggestions are useless as he won't be able to purchase a bike. Also on a tourist visa he can't get a Thai license, which is very easy to do if he already has a bike license from his home country, and his EU license will only be valid for 30 days.
120 Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 Sounds like the OP is going to be spending a few months at a time. Purchasing a bike makes sense and he also has his numbers right - he'll recover his investment within 4-5 months for a Honda Click or the likes. You can purchase a motorbike with a tourist visa. All you need is 45 days on your visa (they don't always enforce it but preferable) and a letter from your hotel with which you can get a proof of residency from immigration. At the shop all they you ask you for is your passport and the residency letter. They don't even ask for your driving license. You pay, sign a few forms and drive away on your new bike. The OP does raise a good point though, where do you guys store/ park your bike when you are away? I park it at a friend's house but it's not perfect and I wouldn't mind paying for a trustworthy long term park /storage when I'm away. Any ideas?
expatsupreme Posted December 22, 2014 Author Posted December 22, 2014 cant buy a bike in Thailand, are you kidding me? Yes I am on tourist visa usually stay 1 year each time, If I can buy condo, why I cant buy a bike?
Shurup Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 Yes I am on tourist visa usually stay 1 year each time, In that case as someone else suggested, it's better to buy something and sell it before you leave. You will have minimal losses and no need to worry about storage, just buy another one when you arrive the next time.

Quite a "SUPREME" expat we have here. I may have been wrong with my 1st reply however it doesn't give you rights to go on and attack people. With your attitude I really HOPE you don't get any answers to your questions and I also wish you get your arse banned!

brfsa2 Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 you come to this forum asking help and treat other with disrespect? all answer are correctly, it may vary between shops. with your tourist visa. you buy a condo really? and buying a scooter? you don't deserve any help here with your attitude for other members. 2
seedy Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 you come to this forum asking help and treat other with disrespect? My solution to these posters - "You're on the List" !!!!
guzzi850m2 Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 I think Pattaya have some kind of storage facilities somewhere but never uses it myself so haven't checked. My wife uses the scooters and truck when I go working overseas for 2 month at the time. When I had the HD I always parked it at the shop I bought it from and had an oil change done during that time so the storage fee was free. One somehow emergency solution: Get you bike impounded by the police for illegal parking and then go and pay upon your return but it might be expensive and your bike left outside in the rain/sun.
saorsa Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 My harley is in my father in law's front room while i am working in singapore...been there 2 years now!
drift Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 I think I read somewhere that you can store your bike here if you want. http://www.bangkokselfstorage.com/index.html You don't have to turn in the plate. The yearly government tax sticker and insurance is what you need to buy. If you're late paying for them past the expiry date you have to pay the for the months you've missed when you renew. A least that's what I had to do when I was late about 3 months. I know nothing about what type of visa is needed for anything.
Briggsy Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 In the secure underground park of the condo, covered (cover max. price 250 Baht), locked (steering lock, Xena lock and chain). Never a problem. There are cars and bikes that have been there for a decade. I doubt they would start though. The key is location selection. With regards to plates, just pay the tax. You can pay it 90 days in advance so plan ahead. It is only a small amount.
eisfeld Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 Like mentioned before you can buy a motorbike and get a driver license on a tourist visa without issue, at least that is my experience buying 3 bikes so far. The license will be only valid for 1 year though. You do need a certificate of residence from immigration though. Condos usually come with a parking space, you can leave it there with a cover maybe. Use some additives for the fuel like Seedy suggested or if you have a local friend, get him to ride the bike around the block once in a while.
papa al Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 I leave my bikes parked under condo with disc alarm locks, and cables & padlocks to a rail. Full of gasoline and under bike covers, plastic wad in the exhaust to keep bugs out. Thats it. But I am stupid and retarded & old too, so what do I know?
expatsupreme Posted December 23, 2014 Author Posted December 23, 2014 so for licence, thai licence I need residency proof? I never heard that you cant get a licence with tourist visa? It is easy for me because I already have it here in Europe but why the internation licence lasts only 1 month? that is absurd......

I know for sure you could get a 1 years license before on a tourist visa because I had one. That is in Pattaya and yes you need a residence certificate from immigration which is easy to get a long as you rent a condo/house or have your own condo. I have the 5 year licenses now for car/bike but I am on a marriage visa so I don't know the current rules.
papa al Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 Welcome to the comedy of the absurd. Varies by locale and maybe individual government worker and their mood, but yup you can get DL & buy a bike on tourist visa. You need ResCert for each, so get two at immigration. Hotel receipt is usually good enough. Go for it. 1
