Flight cancelled after lantern pieces found blocking turbine

I have an idea, which some of you will laugh at because you seem to be anti-everything.

The paper in the lantern is probably not an issue, but the wire frame may be. All the wire frame does is hold the lantern in shape, for a limited time.

Why not use bamboo or cane strips instead of wire ? Asian people can make amazing things with these materials, why not lanterns ?

These lanterns are a part of Thai culture and I would hate to see them banned.

If you talk to any older Thai, they all say that the lanterns were never let off on such a scale in the past. It is only in recent years you see the huge numbers. From what I am told by the older generation it was a case of one or two from the local temple and maybe a few others. Nobody was letting them off on such a scale. It seems to be a case of mass commercialism comes to lanterns; and not being a part of Thai culture on this scale.

The wire is there to hold the combustible material which in the case of bamboo or cane strips would burn through before the air was hot enough to lift the balloon.

When and if one of those plane will crush after sucking this stuff into the engine, there will

be no need to recover the black boxes... only in this country those shenanigans allowed

to happened under the fight path... great...

Thai cultural festivities should be allowed to go ahead no matter what, but corporate interests go before people, and their traditional cultural heritage. let the people do what they have done for ages, and meanwhile keep the planes grounded for a few hours.

Cultural festivities whistling.gif ...are lanterns part of New Years Eve cultural heritage? are fireworks ?,Christmas in a Buddhist country ? ...is throwing a bucket of water and ice in someone's face during the Songkran period a long held cultural tradition ? No...... they are all recent,in history terms, additions.

Got nothing to do with so called corporate interests, its primarily safety and common sense.

Why do numerous posters assume an aircraft would crash if ONE engine went out of service on a twin engined aircraft?

I suppose there rarely is just one lantern released - and even one motor suddenly blowing up/disabled on either takeoff or landing would be a challenge, or with poor training possibly disastrous regarding consequences. Edited by jabis
