...SAW TODAY AT BOOKIES ......SPURS 50-1 TO WIN PREMIERSHIP ........WORTH A TENNER I RECKON...(SERIOUS)

My best chum is a Spurs Season ticket holder and each season, without fail, has personal bets with Arsenal fans that Spurs will finish above Arsenal. He also has bets at the bookies that Spurs will win the Premier League and / or come in the top 4.

I don't need to tell you how much money he has 'won'!!!

Last season I was at the Spurs - Man U game when Spurs were 1-0 up until the last kick of the game and it was a draw.

Spurs will always break your heart - Save your 10 quid. :o

What the bloody hel_l is happening with Spurs? I have been one of a few who have critised Ramos for selling Keane without replacement being lined up but firstly we go and win that tournament in Holland and then thump Roma 5-0. Couple of fluke results or has Ramos come up with a plan where we don't need 2 star performers up front? I know Bent has started very well but even if we keep Berbatov we still don't have cover so is strength in midfield (something we havn't had for decades) and one up front his master plan?

Anyone seen any of the games mentioned?

Watched Football Focus on UBC last night and the 'experts' are predicting Spurs for 4th/5th this season and have the squad to the top the Gooners. None of the pundits appeared drunk or otherwise incapacitated so here's hoping.

After todays result...

Where is that "Next Year for sure" shirt :D

I really did think Spurs would have a good season......I'm sure all you Spurs fans are really miffed at this result :D

But if MarkR is suffering I am a happy man :o

PS but I feel sorry for my old mate Chonabot

Oh dear. 2 games 2 defeats, 4 goals against and 2 scored (one courtesy of a Boro defender).

And now watch the panic with transfer season about to close. Berbatov will be all decked out in red before midweek and we'll have at least one flash in the pan Russian signed up for as much as we got for Keane and in all the madness our man Ramos will forget all about that crap defence. Sad eh.

I had Spurs down to finish 8th before the season started, pretty brave I reckon.

What a shocking start to the season. I think the shouts of Spurs to break into the top 4 or to even finish 5th are a bit premature! If Arshavin does come tot he lane he will be the direct replacement for Keane but if Berbatov leaves which is looking more and more likely a replacement will have to be found which is going to be very unlikely with only a few days of the transfer market left.

And where is that defensive midfielder which has been required for about 3 or 4 seasons now??

Pavlyuchenko 'set for Spurs move'

Spartak Moscow striker Roman Pavlyuchenko has told the Russian media he is poised to join Tottenham Hotspur.

"I can confirm I'm joining Spurs. Right now I'm getting my visa and as soon as it is ready I will fly to England to sign a contract," he said.

"Everything has happened very quickly so I could not even say goodbye to my team-mates."

Pavlyuchenko added that he would not play for Spartak in their Champions League qualifier on Wednesday.

The club travel to face Dynamo Kiev in the second leg of their third qualifying round and Pavlyuchenko will miss out after he reportedly returned to Moscow for talks with the Premier League club.

BBC Sport understands that the deal is not yet a formality but Spartak's general manager Valery Karpin said his club have accepted a bid from Tottenham.

"There is a concrete sum which Tottenham proposed and we have agreed the amount," he told Russian newspaper Soviet Sport.

"If Roman will agree a contract then we are ready to let go him go. If Roman begins to play in England, this will be good both for him and for the team."

Pavlyuchenko was Russia's top scorer at Euro 2008 with three goals as they reached the semi-finals and he also netted twice in a 2-1 win over England in a qualifying match in October last year.

"I could not decide if I wanted to go to England at first - first yes, then no," added Pavlyuchenko.

"The only thing that stopped me from leaving was my family. But now all doubts are behind me and I decided to sign a contract with Tottenham and the formalities are practically settled."

Spurs have been searching for a striker as a replacement for Robbie Keane, who joined Liverpool for £20.3m this summer, while Dimitar Berbatov looks set to leave the club before the end of the current transfer window on 1 September.

The Bulgaria striker has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United and did not feature in Spurs's 2-1 defeat at home to Sunderland on Saturday.

Spurs had originally targeted Pavlyuchenko's Russian team-mate Andrei Arshavin but the club decided not to follow up their initial interest in the Zenit St Petersburg playmaker.

From the BBC website...

Russia playmaker Andrei Arshavin's on-off summer move to Tottenham could be back on, BBC Sport understands. Spurs ended negotiations with Zenit St Petersburg 10 days ago after failing to agree on a fee for the 27-year-old. But the Russian side are believed to have re-opened talks after lowering their asking price, prompting a re-think from the Spurs hierarchy.

Should he join, Arshavin would link up with Roman Pavlyuchenko, who will seal his move from Spartak Moscow by Friday. Tottenham agreed a fee for Pavlyuchenko at the beginning of the week, with the Londoners thought to be paying up to £12m for the 26-year-old striker. And by pairing him with Arshavin, Spurs will re-create the partnership that helped Russia storm so impressively to the semi-finals of Euro 2008 this summer.

The news should also please Zenit manager Dick Advocaat, who has already signed a like-for-like replacement in Danny from Dinamo Moscow for around £24m and who claimed Arshavin's ongoing links to Spurs have upset team morale this season.

It is thought the pair's arrival will pave the way for Dimitar Berbatov to complete his "dream" move to Manchester United. The Bulgarian, 28, has repeatedly informed Spurs officials of his desire to move to the champions and he was left out of Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Sunderland last weekend because of a "lack of focus".

Despite potentially outlaying as much as £30m for Arshavin and Pavlyuchenko, Spurs are thought to be close to bringing in two other signings this week. The first of those is Manchester City defender Vedran Corluka, whose move to the Londoners was called off at the last minute at the start of the month. City have since signed Belgium international Vincent Kompany from Hamburg and are now thought to be willing to allow the move.

And Tottenham are also thought to be closing on a deal for Sporting Lisbon's highly-rated Portugal international midfielder Miguel Veloso. The 22-year-old, rated at around £15m, has been linked with Manchester United and Arsenal in the past, but is believed to be keen on a move to Spurs, who are on the look-out for a defensive midfielder to complement summer signings Luka Modric, David Bentley and Giovani dos Santos.

However, reports suggesting Ajax striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar will join Spurs appear to be wide of the mark, with his agent Arnold Oosterveer telling BBC Sport that he has had no contact from the Londoners regarding a move.

These are testing times for Spurs yet again, however a victory tomorrow at Portsmouth could truly lift them slowly out of misery and signs are looking good if one is to believe statistics taken from BBC sports page:

1. Tottenham hold a seven-match unbeaten Premier League record against Portsmouth of six wins and one draw, including the double over them last season.

2. Pompey have not picked up three Premier League points against Spurs since a 1-0 triumph on 18 October 2004 at Fratton Park when Yakubu scored the goal.

Therefore a victory tomorrow would be huge, as upcoming fixtures will be against Hull, Bolton at home and Stoke away..........so,

COME ON YOU SPURS !!!!! :o

The Spurs fans were right I believe to chant to Ramos in the Portsmouth game about not knowing what he is doing.

But hey he don' like living in England and is clearly uncomfortable in his job and life where he is now.

Perhaps he can see failure as a way to get back quicker to Spain?

Right or not?

Ramos has to carry a large part of the 'credit' for where Spurs are at present but for me the larger parts goes to Comolli. He is the one bringing the players in and boy what a mess he's got us into. I know it's early season but instead of going for artisans like Bentley and Modric for over 30mil surely we would have been better to build from the back but it wasn't until the last day of the season when anyone of note was added. The likes of Gunter are not ready for the top flight and with King always bloody injured and Bale heading the same way why we did we not address the issue at first opportunity instead of courting the likes of Villa and Eto who were never going to be interested in playing for us. And as every Spurs supporter new where Berbatov was going before last season finished why was that not covered? Bent couldn't get a game last season but he's expected to single handedly save us this. Good planning eh.

I do expect Spurs to get out of trouble but our season is already shot or will be as soon as we lose in the UEFA cup, and that's only a day or two away, but with the likes of O'Hara 'commanding' the midfield (pause for laughter) and the entire defense operating at a lower standard than last season and the squad devoid of any leaders it will be close to Christmas before we get out of the bottom third but really can't see us getting higher.

I've been supporting Spurs for better than 40 years and have the grey hairs to prove it but this has to be the biggest mess I have ever seen us in and that includes 76/77 season when we were relegated.

Now we can start by thumping six past the almighty Hull City on Sunday but failure to win sill surely be the end for Ramos and 'Coco' Comolli.

Good post!

Spurs are in for a relegation battle this season in my opinion. I just cannot see where the points are coming from, the team just about makes it into the oppositions half and then they just pass sideways, backwards or hoof it forwards. Ramos is one of the best paid managers in the Premiership and he needs to start showing some of the tactical nous that took Seville to back to back UEFA cups. People talk about Comolli and the players who are brought in and I think he has lots of things to answer for but Ramos is picking the team and some of his team selections and subs are baffling at best, I still think Comolli has to go though.

In my opinion Levy has experimented with the DOF system for a long time now...it must be about 7 years and it just hasn't worked in the way Levy wants it too. Either bring in a manager who has control over transfers or if you stick with teh DOF system let the manager choose who that DOF is.

We are in deep deep trouble.

Spurs are doing fine, right? Just send us back Gomes and we'll return the cash. :o

I am sure Gomes is just dying to get back to playing in a decent side. I am sure he wont be looking forward to playing in the Championship next season and thats the way we are headed...beaten by Hull at home. They must love coming down to play the London teams!

I could understand giving someone who has a proven track record in the transfer market the job as DOF and the 100s of millions theyve got to spend, but all these DOF seem to be people who just couldnt cut it as a manager when they had total control of everything.

From the point of view that Spurs have made good money selling players its worked for them, but even a lot of that is more to do with the transfer market constantly going up and up.
