Chiang Rai: - The manager of the Black House Museum in Chiang Rai cried foul on Tuesday that a group of Chinese tourists damaged the top part of a 30-year-old wooden pole of stairs in front of a Thai-style teak house.

The museum displays the artworks of late artist Thawan Duchanee and it is a popular tourist destination in Chiang Rai, like the Wat Rong Khun in Chiang Mai. Earlier, Wat Rong Khun banned Chinese tourists for half a day after they refused to flush toilets.

Noppadol Khuenphet, the museum manager, said the incident happened on February 3 when seven or eight Chinese tourists were visiting the museum.

The tourists posted for photos in front of the house, which was made of teak. The house was special because the four wooden poles at the bottom and top of the stairs were designed by Thawan some 30 years ago.

Noppadol said a Chinese tourist jumped into the air for photo posting and one of his feet accidentally kicked at the top of one of the poles, breaking it off. The tourists then walked away as if nothing happened.

Learning of the accident, Noppadol had the broken pole removed and had it replaced by an imitation one on the following day.

The manager said he would like the media to help warn the Chinese tourists to behave while visiting the museum. He said many of them often stole small pieces of sculptures as souvenirs. Several also refused to flush toilets.

The manager said about 4,000 Chinese tourists visited the museum each day and they had become a headache of the museum staffs.

!!! I do not understand all the fuss. Thailand has the normal tourist not wanted and now Thailand has the "quality tourists" they like. What's wrong..

Flush the toilets?

Very ironic that this comes from a country where the vast majority of public 'toilets' are nothing more than a hole in the ground with a ceramic footplate! I'm guessing when he says 'flushing the toilet' he means using the 29 baht plastic saucepan to scoop water from a fetid tank and attempt to force your human waste down an already clogged and filthy sewer pipe?

And these (Chinese) are the tourists that TAT is wooing so much.

Sure, they will come in large numbers - in prepaid tour groups,

stay in hotels that are mostly owned by Chinese,

eat in the Chinese owned restaurants,

and meanwhile have no respect for anyone, destroy things and walk away as if nothing happened,

drop their pants and crap in the moat in broad daylight in Chiang Mai (I've actually seen this),

stop in the middle of the street while 4-5 of them open a map to look at it,

order 1 bowl of rice and share it among 6 of them,

spit on the floors of restaurants (or anywhere else they happen to be),

and are generally rude and obnoxious.

But, hey, according to TAT, the numbers are up, so that's all that matters.

They are going to have to brief the tour guides to redouble their efforts in checking toilets after the quality tourists have used them im afraid.

The toilets - as is everything else at the Black House are kept clean and in good repair.....the toilets are actually part of the entire exhibit process and are photographed a lot when not in use.....some of the Chinese appear to be nothing more than uncultured savages....To me the Black House is more impressive than the White Temple...

I've been there recently (the day he died actually). I spent a fair bit of time walking around. While there I noticed how peaceful and quiet it was due to the lack of tourists. So unless there's been an explosion since his death (any new Chinese movies launched?) I seriously doubt there are 4,000 tourists of any nationality visiting that museum.

What does Thailand expect, China will soon be running Thailand so they better start showing these Chinese the respect they will soon demand.

Look, the Chinese are just beginning to enter the world of "middle class" but the median income is still only $6000+ a year, and is a similar amount in terms of GDP per person (compared to $53,000 in the U.S. according to stats on CNN the other day). Thailand would be better off with just affluent tourists from Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Dalian and Chengdu coming to visit with their more refined behavior. But small towns and villages are still composed of peasant culture. It will take some more time before the Chinese in general accustom themselves to international touristic / travel standards.

(Mind you this was 22 years ago, but on HK to Chengdu flights the men were all spitting into the ash trays! I suppose now they're using the barf bags.)

On another note, they're louder as groups than American tour groups in Europe ever were, but I don't mind much...I'm so biased in favor of the lovely Chinese women, and their accents in English are so beautiful (except for Cantonese).

Ah, so. more "Kwal y Tee" tourists that the country desperately needs! Wonder "wat" would happen if some tourist desecrated their Great Wall of China, or broke one of their terracotta warriors?
