Stray bullet lands inches away from woman at Central Pattaya Apartment

bullet-6.jpg

PATTAYA: -- A bullet from a gun which is thought to have been expelled into the air, entered the apartment of a 34 year old woman through the roof and missed her by a matter of inches.

Police were called to the Faetsam Apartments in Soi 10 off the Central Pattaya Road late on Wednesday Night and met with Khun Rapiporn, who occupies an apartment on the top floor.

She had just come home from work and was eating when she heard what she believed to be a gun shot or a firework. Then a load noise inside her room caused her to scream and she suddenly realized a bullet had come through the roof of her apartment and the bullet casing had landed next to her on the floor.

Guns don't get "expelled into the air" and casings stay in the gun or fall near the gun. The word is "gunshot."

What would TV be without all the retired school teachers?wink.png

Lacking moderation. :D

It's lucky that you are around to put the story right for us all, I don't think any one of us could work out what the report actually meant.

come on - you can never be sure lol

There was another event like this reported on TVF news months ago except it was the roof of a house, a bullet fired into the air will lose its energy and fall with no more force than if it was dropped from a few hundred feet, this bullet in order for it to penetrate the roof as shown in the picture was fired down from a nearby higher building as a deliberate act or stupidity

As you said: you can't be sure !

Yes a falling bullet is "not that fast", about 5 to 10 times less than when it is fired, but still can fall at 40 m/s for a hand weapon bullet! 150 km/h is far than enough for a bullet to go through the thin roof & ceiling of many Thai houses.

At 40 m/s only, a bullet very probably will bounce on a human body, but it can still be fatal if you are unlucky to receive it on a weak place (eyes, ears, ...)

a falling object including a bullet will be no faster than a small stone - a nutt - a bolt - an egg , they reach maximum velocity after about 200 feet unless they are propelled or fired and a falling bullet is no different

have a read

More or less. We are not in space and a dense (metal) bullet will fall slightly faster than a nut or an egg. Just Google it: Falling speed of bullets in the 30-70 m/s range. People already have died from bullets falling from the sky...

Edit: I saw you edited your answer. Yes of course I agree with "terminal velocity", but problem is this velocity still is fast enough to kill.

if fired straight up from a gun and remains spinning it will fall slightly faster and could be harmful to a human's soft skin maybe even fatal if you are unlucky - but to penetrate the roof of a building is asking a lot

// but to penetrate the roof of a building is asking a lot

I could agree wink.png . I depends a lot of the roof.

Many Thai places just use fibro-cement-sheets or thin metal-sheets as a roof

and the ceiling often is weak plasterboard.

Frequent accidents of people walking through this kind of "roof".

No real idea how a bullet will react on that ?? through? bounce?...

You are wrong,,we got one Bullet.44/.45 come true the roof and ceiling about 4 months ago, distance between roof and ceiling 1,6 mtr holes nearly in vertical line,,,,,no high buildings around,,,,coming true the roof and ceiling sounded like a gunshot,,,,No police they don't want to know.still got the hole in the ceiling got a new roofing sheet on the roof ,still got the bullet that missed my girlfriend by 40 cm,Please don't say anything if you do not know what you are talking about. mad.gif.pagespeed.ce.z6RtN005qsrqHQ4roTc

'A bullet from a gun which is thought to have been expelled into the air ...' You have to admire the Pattaya media's exotic use of English verbs, adverbs and adjectives - even though the essential meaning misses the point, more often than not. But stray usually refers to something off-target, not a bullet (which was the more likely expellant than the gun) fired with all the stupidity the (undoubtedly Thai) shooter could muster.

Actually I do know what I'm talking about - there will be another explanation for your event - one you haven't thought of

sounded like a gunshot would be a reasonable clue, bullets hitting something while in freefall don't make a noise like a gunshot - keep the feet for dancing stay off the yogurt whistling.gif

40m/s = 144km/h = 90mph

Still could have given her a nasty bruise or worse...

Presume the loud noise was the bullet hitting the tilled floor, no indication of any damaged tiles.

I can just imagine the police response, I ain't going looking for the shooter, he may shoot me...

Can someone tell me did I spell ricochet correctly?

Or has it been decided that it is a terminal velocity issue?

Of course, if in the likely event that it may have been, you can still continue the argument that a spinning projectile (deflected discharged round) would make a much bigger hole in her ceiling..........wink.png

Edit: assuming it was the round that was found in her apartment, and not the casing, it would be interesting to see what state it was in.
