Car bomb attack is a paid job by same group of perpetrators in recent Bangkok bombings

KOH SAMUI: -- Security authorities say the car bomb attack at Central Festival shopping mall in Koh Samui Friday night was believed to be the work of the same group of perpetrators responsible for recent bombings in Bangkok.

Government spokesperson Maj Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd said Saturday that it seemed that the car bomb attack at Central Festival was the work of this same group of people.

He said as Bangkok security was fully tightened, they then turned target to elsewhere to sabotage peace and order in the country.

He said security forces are closely monitoring the group and tracking them from evidence at the scene.

The spokesman said that Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha was reported of the attack last night and he has immediately ordered deputy prime minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan to take charge of the investigation.

He also ordered the Royal Thai Police commissioner to fly to Samui to investigate.

EOD and forensic police are still inspecting the scene at Central Festival.

The underground parking lot was badly damaged particularly its ceiling collapsed, and the escalators destroyed.

Debris from the damaged cars still littered the ground and the mall remained closed today as clearance was not yet finished.

The Internal Security Operation Command’s forward command condemned the bomb attack saying it was intended to sabotage peace and order of the country as people are to celebrate Songkran.

The attack by ill intentioned people would undermine tourism of the country, it said.

But local tourism operators said today Songkran celebration activities will go ahead as usual and no tour groups have cancelled their bookings.

The situation is still normal only with the security that was tightened fully.

Meanwhile the Fourth Army Region spokesman said the pickup truck that was used in the car bomb attack was stolen from Yala on March 31 and was one of the vehicles that security officials have warned that it could be used to make car bomb.

The driver of the pickup truck had earlier said he was robbed and his truck which belonged to a local administration office taken away by the insurgents.

But police investigators did not fully trust his information as he reported the robbery to police two hours later.

Security officials are checking video footages at the ferry pier in Don Sak as the truck could arrive in Samui only aboard the ferry.

The spokesman said the Samui car bomb attack might be carried out by southern insurgents paid to do the job same as the bombing in front of Ramkhamhaeng university which the bomb suspects came from the three southern provinces.

However this has yet to be confirmed and find out the connection between the two groups.

Meanwhile security officials have not established the car bomb attack and the huge fire at Surat Thani Cooperative were related although both cases happened almost at the same time.

But a cooperative staff said electrical short circuit was likely the cause rather than arson attack.

The fire destroyed the entire food centre and warehouse building. Nobody was hurt in the inferno.

Initial damage was put at 40 million baht, mostly on cargoes which were bought and stored for sale during the Songkran festival.

The cooperative is owned by Suthep Thaugsuban, now is a monk at a temple in Surat Thani.

KOH SAMUI: -- Panitharn Watanayakkorn, an advisor to Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan, said the authorities have gathered a lot of information and evidences related to the car bomb attack at the Central Samui department store late Friday night.

Panitharn said the attack was definitely not done by local people.

He said the authorities would not take a long time to pinpoint the attacker.

KOH SAMUI: -- Fourth Army Area Command Lt Gen Prakarn Chonlayut said the car used in the car bomb attack at the Central Samui department store late Friday night had been registered as being lost in Yala.

Prakarn said the authorities were trying to figure out how the car had been smuggled from Yala.

Prakarn said he could not yet confirm that the attack was carried out by Muslim insurgents from the deep South.

ISOC spokesman says certain insurgents might be hired to carry out Surat attacks

KOH SAMUI: -- Col Banphot Poolpian, spokesman of the Internal Security Operations Command, said certain insurgents from the deep South might be hired to carry out attacks in Surat Thani.

He was referring to the car bomb attack at the Samui Central department store and a fire at the Surat Thani Cooperative.

He said the ISOC has not receive any information that the southern insurgents would carry out attacks beyond the boundary of the three southern provinces. But, he said, it was possible that some of them might be hired by someone, who might have other motives, to carry out the attacks.

Gen Prayut concerned for public safety after two blasts in Surat Thani last night

BANGKOK, 11 April 2015 (NNT) - Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha expressed his concern over safety of people returning to their hometown on the first day of Songkran holidays, deputy government spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd revealed today.

He said Gen Prayut has ordered the police and military as well as civil servants concerned and Transport Ministry officials to provide convenience to holiday makers in their trips.

The PM’s concern was also extended to those affected by the two latest bomb incidents happened last night in Surat Thani. The first incident involved a car bomb at Central Festival’s car park in Samui Island and the other involved a fire at the Agricultural Cooperative of Surat Thani.

Gen Prayut ordered Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon to closely follow up the situation. National police chief Somyot Pumpunmuang was assigned to visit the incident scenes whereas the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) was assigned to integrate efforts with all security units and civilians to optimize security measures.

According to Maj-Gen Sansern, intelligence showed a possible link between the incidents in Surat Thani and the bombs occurring earlier in Bangkok. The report suggested that stringent security measures of the government might have forced the culprits to stir up situations in the provinces.

No deaths were found in both incidents in Surat Thani but seven people were slightly injured after being hit by shrapnel. Now they have been discharged from hospitals and taken care of by provincial authorities.

Like the bombing in Bangkok, the intent was not to kill people but to frighten people and destabilise the peace. Keep in mind that just recently, the Govt lifted martial law and indicators are that things are returning to normal. Apparently, tourism figures are back up, for example.
