i have had this for over 5 days, throat is on fire and is very painfull to swallow, the cough is like a hacksaw blade across my throat and chest.

i have got medications from the hospital, stepsils but i found out i cant take anti-biotics as i am on warfarin for life.i am gargling with warm salted water but not getting much relief.the doctor said there is swelling and much redness.for which she gave me a steriod. its starting to get the better of me as its not getting any better. as for how i caught it the only contact i have had the past 10days is with the wife, who did have a mild cold.nothing like i got.

so is there any alternative i can take with the same as an antibiotic.

I am feeling with you....the biggest problem is that you can't sleep with it...not sleeping well makes you even weaker....

a short relieve is something cold....but it doesn't last.

Also I found some of the more aggressive mouth wash help a little bit.

Also there are antibiotic tabs that you keep in your mouth, they should not (or not much) go into your blood stream and work just locally.....small shops like 7/11 have them.

Depending on the kind of infection I found they either work wonder (in a few hours everything is good) or don't work at all (bacteria not sensitive to this antibiotic or not an bacteria at all).

Antibiotics interact with warfarin, don't know if there is a method to compensate for that (reducing/increasing dose or use another anticoagulant for the time)?

You need a better doctor, I think. That might be a strep throat if it hurts that bad and untreated strep itself can lead to heart problems including rheumatic fever. Strep usually reacts brilliantly to penicillin. I've had it a couple of times and it's no fun, but starts getting much better quickly if treated. Like overnight.

You really shouldn't go without a lab culture and medication, whatever that takes. Strep is also highly contagious if you live with someone or... I'm not saying it's strep of course but it should be tested.

Good luck.

Against mucus Acetylcysteine works good for me. It just makes the mucus more fluid. Also good for the liver.

Have you considered acid reflux or GERD?. I had similar symptoms to yours and that's what it turned out to be. No need for antibiotics. Antacids (liquid and milk of magnesia tablets) and Miracid capsules brought relief. Originally I thought it was strep throat but it was an excess of stomach acid reaching my throat while I slept. My throat was on fire. Try using more pillows to elevate your neck and head when you sleep at night.

Here is something that works for me. Mix 1/4 cup of vinegar with 1/4 cup of honey and take 1 tablespoon 6 time a day. The vinegar kills the bacteria.

First of all, warfarin use is not an absolute contraindication to taking antibiotics. There is some increased risk of over-coagulation but it is small (small = on the magnitude of 2-3% only).

"Acute upper respiratory tract infection increases the risk of excessive anticoagulation independent of antibiotic use. Antibiotics also increase the risk; however, most patients with previously stable warfarin therapy will not experience clinically relevant increases in INR following antibiotic exposure or acute upper respiratory tract infection." http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24445404

Secondly, the increased risk is not the same for all antibiotics but rather varies greatly by class. Azoles are the worst; macrolides (azithromycin etc) and quinolones the least.

The guidance is to more closely monitor (i.e. measure INR frequently) people on warfarin who have to use antibiotics, not to avoid antibiotic use when indicated.

Your throat should have been cultured and I suggest you go back to the doctor and insist on this. If the culture shows a bacterial infection -- or if the redness is accompanied by fever and enlarged lymph nodes - then abx treatment is warranted.

I also suggest you also take redoxan, an effervescent tablet containing zinc and Vit C, available in most drugstores.

Ginger tea (made by boiling fresh pieces of ginger, not the powders) may also give some relief.

cetirizine[zyrtect] 10mg. 1x4 a day[20]

roxithromycin[rulid] 150ml.this one i havnt taken due to it being on my list of meds.that interact with warfarin.

I think Sheryl's advice is spot on and although my antibiotic "of choice" here is Azithromycin, I have used Rulide (Roxithromycin) recently and it has worked well on clearing my sinus and sore throat.

Good luck..........oh and a little night-time drink I use is warm water with a spoonful of honey, lemon juice, cinnamon and a dissolved paracetamol. Works well for me.
