HUA HIN: -- Privy Council president Gen Prem Tinsulanonda today presided over the erection ceremony of King Naresuan the Great statute to its foundation base at the Ratchaphakdi park.

The ceremony was attended by Army commander-in-chief and deputy defence minister Gen Udomdej Sitabutr.
The bronze statute of King Ramkhamhaeng the Great has already been erected on the foundation in the park which is within the compound of the Army Non Commissioned Officer School in Hua Hin district of Prachuap Khiri Khan province.

A 500-ton crane was used to lift the huge statute of the king to erect on the foundation.

Tomorrow and the following day the statutes of King Narai the Great and King Taksin the Great will be erected on the foundations.

Seven statutes of the ancient kings will be erected at the Rajabhakdi park.

I assume that '500 ton' is another typo and should read '50 Ton'

A 500 ton cap crane would need an escort to get through local routes to the Army base. If it was neccessary to use a 500 ton crane then it would be because the statue site is difficult to access and a crane with a long jib extension was needed.

Please rush me the photograph. I enclose 50 satang airmail postage.....

Giant statues of past kings will be erected at $27m park in Hua Hin

Giant bronze statues of seven of the country's past kings have in recent days held up traffic on the southbound highway to Hua Hin, as they have been trundled slowly on big trucks to a park in the city on the Gulf of Thailand.
"It is an army initiative," Major- General Weerachon Sukonthapaitipak, deputy government spokesman, told The Straits Times.
General Udomdej Sitabutr, army commander-in-chief, visited the site yesterday morning to ensure the statues will be raised as planned by Aug 8. One statue was slightly damaged while being transported from Lopburi province.
