Thailand disappointed with European Parliament’s resolution on human rights



BANGKOK: -- Thailand is disappointed with the European Parliament’s resolution on human rights situation in the country.

Foreign Ministry’s spokesman Sek Wannawethi said Friday that European Parliament’s negative resolution reflected its inaccurate understanding of the situation and developments in Thailand.

The Thai government, said Mr Sek, is committed to promote and protect human fights, recognize its obligations to international human rights and adhere to the political roadmap toward election.

European Parliament expresses its concern at “deteriorating human rights situation in Thailand following the illegal coup of May 2014” and urges the Thai authorities to lift repressive restrictions on the rights to liberty, and the peaceful exercise of other human rights. It calls on the Thai authorities to overturn convictions and sentences, to withdraw charges and to release individuals and media people who have been sentenced or charged for peacefully exercising their rights to freedom of expression or assembly.

Mr Sek insisted that Thailand and the European Union remain good friends and partners and share close political, economic, social and cultural relationships. He called on the EU to cooperate with Thailand constructively.

Thailand, he said, is ready to heed proposals which are constructive, balanced and based on accurate information and to cooperate with the EU in all aspects and at all levels.

As usual, those pesky foreigners just don't understand Thailand. Thailand should by no means be disappointed at the European Parliament but should in fact be disappointed in itself.

By accurate information I'm sure he referring to the Junta propaganda machine.

You can be very proud of the fact that Thailand achieves world's first blood transfusion in elephant surgery.

Let's see. A military government performs an illegal coup and proceeds to:

- Ban assemblies of any size, and enforce this very rigidly against the previously elected party, while giving plenty of leeway to the people who got them in power (Suthep).

- Attempts to make a single gateway internet so they can better restrict what people have access to in the outside world.

- Brings in media, politicians, or anyone else they deem for Attitude Adjustments.

- Jails students (or anyone else) when they speak their mind on this matter.

- Attempts to form a constitution which allows them to grab power in the future.

- The unelected government finds it a good idea to enforce all sorts of rules such as closing of bars at Midnight, enforcing the sell of alcohol within certain areas, without really taking into consideration the effect of these moves on business.

- Seems to be content with delaying elections as long as they can to hold on to power in the first place.

It's all just a misunderstanding...

EU seems quite determined on pressing this issue and appears not to really care that Thailand is disappointed.

Ryszard Czarnecki said e.g. during this debate that "we should indicate that our economic cooperation may actually be hinged on Thailand’s cooperation with human rights”. So EU is seriously considering economic sanctions or other actions against Thailand?

I don't think it'll make a damned bit of difference. Prayuth's fight isn't with ex-pats residing here with families, or tourists either.

One can assume you are not among the vast herd of "ignorant" farangs that reside here year after year?

He called on the EU to ignore the lack of human rights, the illegal coup, the slavery, and the imprisonment of innocents.

Who is giving them their information ?. Who are these individuals and media people who need to be released ?. How many have been even been sentenced and charged ?. I wish the EU had paid more attention during the amnesty disgrace and ensuing protests.

And to those who think the amnesty the Junta gave themselves for performing the coup is in any way whatsoever comparable to the amnesty bill : pop down the hospital and see if they've got a spare brain you can have. The notion is ridiculous. Of course their first job is their own protection - but they didn't do it to cancel 25,000 pending cases of corruption against themselves. As things move on, your excuses to vent spite and hatred are getting weaker and weaker and your real character is showing through.

The full 5 page transcript from the EU doesn`t sound one bit like they are being `friendly` nor would it appear they `share` anything in common. As for `constructive proposals` they`re all there in the document. Not that Thailand will take heed of any of them.
