SURIN, 13 October 2015 (NNT) – Amazing Surin Elephant shows will be held in the northeastern province next month.

Surin provincial governorn Atthaporn Singhawichai disclosed that the Amazing Surin Elephant shows, designed as a tourism promotion campaign, will showcase the province's elephant-raising and indigenous identity as well as the way of life of mahouts which has been passed on since the last centuries.

This year’s event will feature the welcoming of 300 elephants returning to Surin province, floats of food for elephants, which may be viewed as the world's biggest ''elephant buffet'' on display, mock elephant hunting and other performances.

The event is scheduled from 13 November until 24 November 2015 in Surin Province. The Amazing Surin Elephant shows are an annual event held in association with Thara Red Cross Fair.

Interested members of the public may ask for more information from the Surin Provincial Office, tel. 044 512039 and 044 521358, or e-mail: www.surin.go.th., or the Surin Provincial Administrative Organization, tel. 044 511975, or the Sikhoraphum Subdistrict Municipality, tel. 044 561243 or the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Surin Office, tel. 044 594447-8 or e-mail: [email protected].

Is there not-so-amazing double (or worse) pricing for farang /

no there isn't. the most fun event (elephant breakfast) is even entirely free as it is held on the streets of Surin. The actual event in the stadium is less fun. For the official event in the stadium and the shows and games you can choose if u want a simple STANDING ONLY ticket (no roof) or enjoy a seat on the covered VIP stand. Prices have for sure changed, but wen I was there around 7 years ago or so, the cheapest ticket was 60 Baht and the VIP seats went for 500-600. it is fun and a great chance to mingle with Isaan people.

Just to be sure.....are you quoting from your experiences seven years ago?.

Because a lot has changed in seven years and many more places such as national parks have put their farang double charging up sky high.

I am sure there must be some Surin residents reading this who can give us an idea of up to date pricing please.

I can't say how much the seats were last year, as we didn't bother with watching the whole show, seen it too many times. But the good seats were a lot more then 500-600 Baht the year before.

Everything else was also very expensive last year. The first time I went to the festival about 8 years ago, the kids rides were 10 Baht each. Last year they were 30 Baht each. When you have 2-3 kids along, and they want to go on all of the rides, it gets expensive fast.

Food prices were also up last year, I remember paying 20 Baht for a plastic bag full of vaguely lemon tasting water.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind burning some cash to have fun with the family, but I just don't think this event is worth it anymore.

My advice is go see the elephant breakfast and skip the rest.

Hi, if we were going to come for a look, where would be a reasonable place to stay, near the venue and close to the food places, markets etc.

Most places get booked months in advance during this 'Peak period' ( also prices triple)

A bit late may try Sangkha. Burirum Sikoraphum/Best luck for you.

My experience with the Round-Up is ...

The 'Elephant Breakfast' is a great event to attend, and stick around for the fun afterwards.

There is (or used to be) a Night time parade, worth a look, but no actual elephants.

There was a 'Miss Roundup' being judged that night, might be fun to attend?

Accommodation is scarce and usually booked well in advance. We stayed with my then partners sister who lived in Surin.

If you wish to go to 'Show', maybe pay the big baht and get a seat in the old grandstand. We didn't and were seated, but on the other side and looking into the Sun all afternoon. Plus, not the best for photos.

Buy a 'higher' level seat. We were just 3 rows up and that was fine until the 'non-paying' Thai people were allowed to enter en-mass and proceeded to sit, stand and raise their umbrellas in front of us. That comes across as 'letting the great unwashed attend for free' and a little elitist, but it does diminish the spectacle for you. So maybe buy a higher level seat.

Pricing was the same for both Westerner and Thai.

Be careful not to walk in 'something', as a lot of somethings are dropped over the week-end.

Enjoy, we did.

We called two years ago and were told ฿1000.- for Farang, ฿500 for Thai. It took them a long time to understand our question and we got no indications as to what we were going to see or where. We didn't go.

I have mixed feelings about elephant shows, it's all very well to talk about supporting the elephant population by means of shows like these but many young elephants are smuggled in from Burma after killing their mothers and brutally broken.

I am writing BS evidently, maybe you, like me, sometimes manage to get your price as you are a Thai resident. I just repeated what I was told, after much confusion, by the tourist office in Surin. Why don't you go *delete* yourself and sober up? There are places where you WILL pay Farang price and no amount of blustering will change that. NEVER? You must get around a bit more.
