LAMPANG: -- A Thai driver and four Myanmar workers were killed when a trailer truck crashed into their pickup in Lampang early Tuesday.

Police said the accident happened at 2 am on Ngao-Song Khet Road in Ngoa district.

Police said the trailer driver apparently dozed off and crashed into the pickup on the opposite lane.

The pickup driver Sayam Pinthong, 31, died at the scene along with three Myanmar workers. Another Myanmar worker died at the Ngao hospital. Four injured Myanmar workers were later forwarded from the Ngao Hospital to the Lampang Hospital.

The trailer driver, Somkid Rungphaophan, 37, was injured and arrested by police.

Thank God for the PM's propaganda on how Thai driving is improving and a wonderful job by traffic police....not

Most pathetic thing about Thailand is its inability to deal with road safety....

They need to assess why they are so incompetent to put together a proper DMV program....

So sad so preventable...

Previous article was 4 killed in van, now 5 killed in truck accident. When will this stop? I went for a motorbike ride yesterday & had to on 3 occassions swerve to the left to avoid an overtaking vehicle. All of them had no regard for me at all, as in all incidences they could plainly see me but kept coming on my side of the road. Again Thais only care about one thing. THEMSELVES not others or even their families. If they did then things would change.

youre new here, arnt you? your motorcycle is small, even if it cost 1 million, somchai has a car so he is more important, even if the car is worth as much as 1 pair of motorcycle tyres....hes still bigger than you. this goes up the transport chain until it gets to head honcho roadking somchai, who drives someone elses big big bus. he stops for no one. he rules the road.

55555, i had a leisurely 4 day drive back down from chiang rai last week where i counted 5 trucks with trailers that had simply rolled off the left or right side of the road and into ditches. all of them were at very low speeds as there wasnt much carnage around the trucks so it looked as if they just drove till they fell asleep. the stats on how many trucks do this in a year would make good reading!

The constant carnage on Thai roads , the weak schooling system and other factors are a block to improved tourism but more especially to inward investment. Foreigners think twice do I want to put my company or my family into that economy compared to the more advanced Asian areas.

I wonder how the stats would add up if someone worked out the number of actual road accidents in Thailand and divided it by the deaths. When a two car RTC happens in UK, generally 2-4 people involved. Two pickups crash in Thailand and it can easily be 20+ people.
