Air card or other connection advise please

Featured Replies

I had been using an (old) air card that I bought in U.S.. and AIS SIM with prepaid 30-day data package. But I just bought a Windows 8.1 laptop and the air card does not work with it. So I need a new way to connect.

I need an air card that works with 8.1 any brand's SIM card, and I can use not only in Thailand but in other countries; I live here but travel fair amount, sometime for months on end. Can someone tell me where to find and perhaps what brand/model is best?

So far I have seen only branded (AIS, True, etc.) air cards in the malls, no stand-alone air cards into which you can insert any SIM. I don't want to buy a branded air card because I can only use it with that brand's service and would have to buy a year-long contract, meaning I'd have to pay for the long stretches when I am not here. Router connection service also is not good, for the same reasons.

Thanks for your help,

The AIS 3G (white) Pocket Wifi 21.6 Mbps made by Huawei will take other SIM cards. Mine took my g/f's True SIM as well as my AIS.

USB to micro USB.

Warning comes with it not to leave unattended when charging because it can get hot.

Not cheap for what it is.

I did notice other independent brands available when I went to one of the big computer / phone shopping complexes.

30 days AIS 399 Baht + VAT(?) Fair service but not brilliant.

Your 'requirement' of needing the AirCard to work in other countries may not be easy to fulfill.

Mobile networks vary by

Frequency Spectrum (band #) used

Network Technology deployed on the tower at each frequency (band)

Thailand currently utilizes

Frequency Spectrum (BAND): 850 (band 5), 900 (band 8), 1800 (band 3), and 2100 (band 1) -- with 2100 (band 1) currently being the prominent band for DATA Internet.

In the near future, Thailand may add 1700 (band 4), 1900 (band 2) and 2300 (band 7, and band 40 TDD-LTE) and 2600 (band 38 TDD-LTE) ...just don't hold your breath.

Network Technology:

variations of GSM, UMTS/WCDMA, HSPA(+) or LTE

You'll need to verify what other Frequency (bands) and Network Technologies those 'other countries' have deployed on the networks you want to use.

See this ThaiVisa topic for comparisons between Thailand and US-based mobile providers, as an example:
