Convicted child abuser Peter Dundas Walbran arrested teaching at Thai school
Lindsay Murdoch

Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand: Police have detained a Sydney man jailed in 2012 over the rape and molestation of Indonesian boys as young as eight who was found teaching at a school in north-eastern Thailand.

Fairfax Media witnessed police confronting Peter Dundas Walbran, a former head of the Australian International School in Jakarta, with a warrant to search his apartment on suspicion of possessing child pornography as he was leaving to go to school on Wednesday.

A police investigator said they had seen Walbran with children from his local neighbourhood several times since Monday.

"We saw Walbran take a boy from the apartment to a shop on (the) back of his motorbike," the investigator told Fairfax Media. "We are investigating."

Only stiff penalties for drugs..

Walbran was sentenced to three years' jail on the Indonesian island of Lombok in 2012 for offences that shocked investigators, including the repeated rape and abuse of children over a period of nine years.

3 years for repeated rape of multiple children over a 9 year period.

How's that for screwed up priorities.

Just how many more of these twisted people are here in Thailand teaching or having access to young children? I really wish the international community would work more closely together when it comes to crime and especially those already with serious criminal charge sheets.

A simple loophole allowed this creep to get a NZ passport - if NZ had known about his past, would they have issued him with a passport? And frightening to see that neither Immigration, the Ministry of Education nor the school even googled his name. facepalm.gif

He had been on the interpol arrest list but lands a job, presumably with visa, in Thailand? Holy Moly.

http://www.smh.com.au/national/australian-extradited-to-indonesia-on-child-rape-claims-20111025-1mhcc.html

You're linking to a newspaper report that is over four years old since when he has been arrested and imprisoned in Indonesia and is no longer on any wanted lists.

This creep left Australia somehow on a New Zealand passport to come to Thailand so your implication that Thailand somehow bears responsibility for his current situation is out of line.

"jailed in 2012 over the rape and molestation of Indonesian boys"

the sentence shorter than 3 years?

and even if on bail, alowed to leave the country?

Read the links on this thread. He served 2 years of a 3 year sentence and was then deported to Australia where somehow he avoided having his name put on a sex offenders register and got a NZ passport. Perhaps he bribed the Australian and New Zealand authorities?

I don't think so. If it takes 1.55 seconds to find him on a google search then perhaps the parents of those he has been teaching might have a legitimate expectation that the school would do some basic checks. In this case it would have shown interpol, arrest warrant, child rape, jail. Some red flags for the school and whoever gave him a visa.

Very few schools in Thailand do any checks, nor do they care if you have a degree, and many do not care or help you to obtain a Non B Visa and Work Permit. My experience with 7 schools, some do help you obtain the proper paperwork, 50% do not. I am a Canadian Native English speaker, with a degree in Education. They just look at "Native English speaker."

Convicted Australian paedophile arrested in Ubon Ratchathani
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- A convicted Australian paedophile was arrested in Ubon Ratchathani at the request of the Australian Federal Police for deportation back to Australia.

The arrest of Peter Dundas Walbran, 58, was made under a cooperation among the Department of Special Investigation, the Central Forensic Science Office, the Royal Thai Police and the Australian Federal Police.

The DSI was asked by the Australian Federal Police to locate Walbran who refused to return to Australian to be registered as a convicted paedophile after he was convicted and jailed in Indonesia for three years. He instead came to Thailand after his release to work as an English teacher.

The video, question put to a policeman, is it acceptable for a convicted pedophile to work in a Thai school? What`s he mean`t to answer, yea, that`s perfectly alright? As a Brit lucky the video had subtitles or I`d never had guessed what the Australians were saying. Just couldn`t make this stuff up,

This is just the tip of the iceberg, they`re out there in droves and they want to abuse our kids, Scary.

I think it is safe to say the Indonesian justice system is as compromised as the Thai system. Anyone with enough cash can buy their way out of nearly anything. That is obviously the case here. Does Thailand not perform any sort of check with Interpol, or any other agency, before hiring teachers? Guess not?

How does such a sick creature get into the country past immigration never mind getting a work permit to teach children would be better for all concerned and for the safety of children if he was just put down like a rabid dog.

This has prompted me to check the farang teachers at my daughters school. Get the names ... easy to do a quick Google search. Any problems found ... I will personally deal with them!!!

I would ask the school if they have done "police checks" both locally and abroad. Teachers are technically supposed to have this documentation in Thailand. Certainly Aust registered teachers must have these checks in place and updated yearly. Also, they must have by law a police check from every country in which they have resided for twelve months or more. No school, especially those "international" orientated schools should have an excuse for this. Indeed with my name you can access the registry yourself as you should be able to do. [if it is an international school check its affiliations and employment requirements. If you cannot find these spelt out, they don't exist]. The problem here is that this guy has been removed form the registry but no one checked and he has most likely used old documentation.

But having said that, in 2010, i did catch an older British teacher downloading masses of pornography at a school in Thailand. So sordid. He was sitting behind another teacher who had his two sons in prathom classes with him!! I put my foot through his desk and dispatched him. I must say the Thai teachers were only moderately interested, and actually more concerned how to replace him. [it was around xmas]. Some teachers wont pass a character test let alone higher professional standards asked.

Good advice. I will restrain myself until I know the facts.

How the hell do people like this even get into Thailand surely immigration have a system where they can check up on criminals . I believe it is time that sex offenders should have there passports stamped with a warning to other countries, kick him out and send him back from where he came from.
