NEW YORK (AP) David Bowie, the innovative and iconic singer whose illustrious career lasted five decades with hits like "Fame," ''Heroes" and "Let's Dance," died Sunday after a battle with cancer. He was 69.

Representative Steve Martin said early Monday that Bowie died "peacefully" and was surrounded by family. The singer had battled cancer for 18 months.

"While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family's privacy during their time of grief," the statement read. No more details were provided.

Bowie turned 69 on Friday, the same day he released a new album called "Blackstar."

Bowie, who was born David Jones, came of age in the glam rock era of the early 1970s. He had a striking androgynous look in his early days and was known for changing his looks and sounds. The stuttering rock sound of "Changes" gave way to the disco soul of "Young Americans," co-written with John Lennon, to a droning collaboration with Brian Eno in Berlin that produced "Heroes."

He had some of his biggest successes in the early 1980s with the stylist "Let's Dance," and a massive American tour.

"My entire career, I've only really worked with the same subject matter," Bowie told The Associated Press in a 2002 interview. "The trousers may change, but the actual words and subjects I've always chosen to write with are things to do with isolation, abandonment, fear and anxiety all of the high points of one's life."

His performance of "Heroes" was a highlight of a concert for rescue workers after the 2001 World Trade Center attacks.

"What I'm most proud of is that I can't help but notice that I've affected the vocabulary of pop music. For me, frankly, as an artist, that's the most satisfying thing for the ego."

Bowie kept a low profile in recent years after reportedly suffering a heart attack in the 2000s. He made a moody album three years ago called "The Next Day" his first recording in a decade which was made in secret in New York City. "Blackstar," which earned positive reviews from critics, represented yet another stylistic shift, as he gathered jazz players to join him.

Bowie was married to international supermodel Iman since 1992.

British Prime Minister David Cameron tweeted that Bowie's death is "a huge loss."

He wrote he had grown up listening to and watching Bowie and called the singer a "master of reinvention" and a pop genius who kept on getting it right.

I was brought up with real singers like Elvis and Roy Orbison, although I don't remember when they first came out.

I would bet that David Bowie was not in the same class as any of these two.

Besides I wasn't into that sort of music, I started off professionally with a showband, then into American country music.

I had forgotten how old he was. 69 is no spring chicken. It's going to be one blow out funeral. May it be as classy as Dusty Springfield's.

And your brilliant success as a musician would explain why you would take a swipe at the deceased? Seriously, you just had to post "you bet"? You dismiss a man who wrote his own lyrics and melodies in favour of the bloated Elvis who relied on borscht belt writers like Leiber & Stoller, or Mort Schuman & Jerry Felder? Ben Weisman wrote 50+ of Elvis' songs. I'm surprised they didn't have him singing his songs in yiddish he was so dependent upon the NYC writers. And then there were Jerry Reed, and Mac Davis who propped up Elvis. David Bowie for all of his ups and downs was never out of the limelight for long. He was able to reinvent his delivery and to remain true to his vision on his own terms. Quite a difference than the ever dull Roy orbison who had such a stellar career that he was quickly forgotten after his career had fizzled. it was only through the generosity and kindness of George Harrison Jeff Lynn, Tom Petty that he was rehabilitated and given an opportunity to earn some money. Bowie did everything himself. No one gave him any pity or charity.

Sad to see people like possum and jacky 54 act so mean spirited,one doesn't have to like the style to appreciate talent. The fact is Bowie wrote many memorable tunes for many years and in interviews he comes across as someone still in touch with his roots and the common man- loved his send-up of Mick Ronson's Hull accent when he asked him to wear make-up on stage.

I don't know what music you listen to or what your knowledge of music is, but he is/was one of the most influential popular musicians of all time, and he was one of the top artists of at least four decades from the 1960s to the 1990s. To many people music is a deeply personal and affecting part of their lives and many grew up with his music from their teens to early old age.

Yes, and I'm sure when Elvis and Roy Orbison came out there were old farts who thought they didn't rise to the standards of "real singers" like Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby (who Bowie did a famous duet with in 1977).

Nothing wrong with being old (i'm getting there myself) but try to keep in mind that there are at least a couple of generations that came after you to whom David Bowie is one of the greatest ever.
