Air quality in Chiang Mai and Prae found unhealthy

BANGKOK, 11 March 2016 (NNT) – The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) has launched efforts to combat haze in nine provinces of the northern region and called on local villagers to refrain from burning garbage, which might only worsen the situation.

DDPM Director-General Chatchai Phromlert has ordered the department's officials in the nine provinces of Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Lampang, Lampoon, Mae Hong Son, Nan, Prae, Payao and Tak to closely monitor the haze situation and spray water to combat dust particulates which could otherwise form haze clouds.

The particulate matter found in the air in the northern region rose over 10 micrograms during the previous day.

The situation in Chiang Mai and Prae has reached emergency level and begun to pose hazards to the people's health. The DDPM has strongly urged the residents to refrain from torching garbage, which might worsen the haze situation.

However, those affected by haze can call Hotline 1784.

I live in the north part of Phrae...it is absolutely terrible here! Can't see the mountains anymore, everyone wearing masks and coughing almost nonstop. Yet, I still see fields being burned daily! Amazing Thailand!

I drove the back roads yesterday to visit a friend. Burning was everywhere. Mainly small fires, but they add up.

I guess I won' be heading north for Songkran then sad.png

TIT and no-one gives a sh**. When the attitude is "I will stop burning when everyone else stops burning!" how on earth will anything change?

Slow day on the news desk. The air is always unhealthy in CM this time of year. coffee1.gif

"Called on them" did he?

I bet their ears pricked up.

Silly question BUT...

Wonder if they'd start taking notice if a Nasty Old Farang Took Legal Action against the Local Government, for allowing this to happen here in CNX every year?

Very least the Government could do, would be to bring back the Farang Health Cover that the previous (Elected) Government introduced.

The air in Phrae is horrible! It's never been so smoky.......for most of us old critters it's an eyewash every 15 minutes!! facepalm.gifsad.pngbah.gifwai.gif

Drove from Phrae to ChiangMai yesterday and back today. Bad air everywhere. Skies were grey, visibility poor. Colors of the trees could be seen only within less than500 m. A bit better this afternoon between Lampang and Phrae.

Just to return to the OP. It,s not/NOT the farmers who were doing this burning.

It's an international problem. Full stop.
