CHIANG MAI — As the drought crisis grows worse across the country, residents have adapted by transforming a rocky, dried out stretch of the Ping River into a temporary motocross track.

In February the river through Chiang Mai’s Chom Thong district and Lamphun’s Ban Hong district went completely dry.,Ban Thung Mak Num village chief Nirut Atama said it was the first time in memory, but locals chose to turn the crisis into opportunity.

One point to make on the "First time in history" : It's also the first dry period since the new water gates were established at Pa Daed. So this allows the irrigation department to completely cut off the river when needed to conserve water.

Thailand should limit songran festivals to small limited areas to conserve water. Like typically major roads like silom are closed, they should just open it for traffic less people on the streets less water wasted.
