LAMPANG: Villagers greedy for free mushrooms ignored an injured woman's cries and helped themselves after a pick-up accident in Lampang.

People who had heard about the accident Thursday rushed to the scene to grab handfuls of the load that was being transported from Lamphun to Mae Sot, Tak.

The female driver had been hurt but her protestations were ignored as the villagers collected the mushrooms, know as Het Po in Thai that have a very short season and are prized right now selling at up to 500 baht a kilo.

Police tried to help but they were outnumbered.

The owner of the pick up who was not there at the time posted pictures online. He said that his wife had employed 5 or 6 people to collect up the valuable cargo but these had been thrust out of the way by the greedy scavengers while police efforts had failed. Apparently a tire on the truck had burst and caused the accident scattering the mushrooms all over the central reservation.

The police are powerless in a situation like this? Amazing!!!

Oh well, nothing was done against a tourist or to insult the coup gov't, so no big deal I guess.

This incident says something very sad and discouraging about...many things.

Most Thais are nice and decent people. 90+%

When extra free money is involved and can get away with it, it drops to maybe 60+% of nice Thais.

I can make the list longer, but most longtermers know this.

Does not matter if you are farang or Thai, like in every country when money is there loads of good people get bad.

PS. Don't hold me on the 90 and 60+% just needed to write a figure, no idea what it really is.

Thais are so full of their Save Face Crap.

If you are just honest, not steal or lie and do your best to be good, you will never have to save your face shit.

How hard would it have been for the villagers to check on the driver to make sure they were OK? How was it possible that the police were unable to do anything as they all carry a firearm? A simple shot in the air would have got the attention of the villagers. If this pick-up truck was filled with something of real value I might have understand the villagers reaction but for mushrooms............sodding mushrooms..........words escape me.

It is quite possible in the eyes of some to rationalize the accident as being the injured woman’s karma and the opportunity to collect some very expensive mushrooms, free of charge, as the villager’s karma. We all have to deal with our own karma, in the eyes of some.

Lets not kid ourselves that this kind of looting and worse doesn’t go on in the West. Just read the world news. People in general are absolutely remarkable in their ability to rationalize their actions.

What were the police suppose to do, or what could they have done to make farangs happy?

Call for back up?

Shoot everyone in the back picking up mushrooms?

Road block?

Shut traffic down in both directions?

Arrest anyone with a mushroom?

Maybe go house to house and search for all the mushrooms in question?

do you mean that only a farang would think this behaviour poor? Are you saying this is is how life is, grab a few mushrooms over aiding a person in distress? Are you saying the respect for the enforcers of the law command such little respect that they are powerless to intervene? If so I have become a little wiser.

All the posters who condemned me in the post about caring Thais should read this, then hang their heads in shame.

Its got nothing to do with being thai, its about people.

It is theft, the fact the cargo had spilled out of the truck does not mean it was not still property of the truck driver.

Aside from the refusal to render assistance and the disobedience of the law enforcement personnel.

The picture it paints is not pretty.
