Reports of more unexploded bombs found in Hua Hin as public urged to remain vigilant

HUA HIN:-- Another explosive device thought to be linked to the double bomb attacks that rocked Hua Hin last week was found in the town centre on Sunday.

Police confirmed the device, which was found at Chat Chai Market, was similar to those used in the bomb attacks in Nakhon Sri Thammarat and Surat Thani.

Pol Lt Gen Charnthep Sesawet said the device contained a mobile phone and matches and after speaking with witnesses believed the device was planted on Wednesday by three men.

Pol Lt Gen Charnthep confirmed that patrols have been stepped up across Hua Hin and that officers are checking CCTV footage of the nearby area.

He urged the public to remain vigilant and report anything they consider to be unusual.

There were also unconfirmed reports on Thai social media that police investigated three more suspicious devices found near Market Village and another at Chat Chai market on Sunday.

Meanwhile authorities have confirmed that a number of schools in Hua Hin will remain closed on Monday including Yamsaard School, Hua Hin Salesian School, Tedsaban Ban Hua Hin School, Wat Nong Kae Municipality School Hua Hin and Sethavidhya School Hua Hin.

The latest developments come as police on Sunday confirmed the discovery of another two unexploded devices in Phuket.

The first device was found at Paradise Park Plaza in Patong, while another was later found next to a clothes shop in China Town.

Police confirmed both devices were the same type as those used in the previous attacks in Patong and Phang Nga.

Over the weekend, deputy police chief Pol Gen Pongsapat Pongcharoen confirmed that those responsible for the attacks remained at large but said that officers were close to issuing arrest warrant for some of the suspects.

Pol Gen Pongsapat denied earlier reports that two suspects had been arrested, saying that police had only questions two witnesses.

Pol Gen Pongsapat also declared the situation in Thailand had returned to normal and urged people to continue with their lives as normal.

Due to the number of devices being found, it is obvious that this was a well organized blitz and not an off-the-cuff action. Whichever organization is behind this has manpower resources as well, this was not one or two people planting these devices.

When this all happened on the 12th I posted on here that my gf heard of 2 possible bombs being planted in the Market Village as that is where she works. So she heard from co-workers and friends about that. After having spoken to Thais about this, many people seem to know of multiple locations that have been 'targeted' or 'suggested' to be attacked.

But my question is this; the unexploded bombs they found, why did they not go off? Malfunction or was it that the 2 people they have is custody could not set them off seeing as they are behind bars?? I am very hesitant to believe these 2 people are guilty, but they very well could be

By last night many Thais in Hua Hin knew about the late discovered devices in the night market and it was uneerily quiet around some streets also rumours that casualties from Thursday and Friday in hospital are in comas etc .Some bar staff close by described their crying for hours on end during Friday night.

There was a few more security around last evening  and a few more officials and controls on street parking but nothing like what there would be in any western country where given what at least 6 bombs planted the place would be in almost lock down. Worrying that most of the better schools in Hau Hua are closed today and understandable but I feel westerners still feel uninformed. To be fair there was a contingent of officials / local . politicians looking around last night  It's the balance between business as usual vs real security for visitors andI think the first is winning out.

I am glad that the bombs found were not also detonated,  I am also wondering

why the group who did this were not able to build bigger bombs?

Maybe it is harder to do this in Thailand as compared to other countries.

I do hope that things will settle down before this coming Winter

I think it is important to know what a couple of you have suggested--are these new found bombs duds, are they simply not yet detonated, or are they simply non-functioning scare devices?  Other important issues include are they indeed of the same or similar parts and construction, specifically detonation type? Is there a similar pattern to where they were placed and is it possible all could have been set by one team (of one or more) by simply making the rounds; or need it have been multiple teams who planted them in the different areas?

It was only on Saturday that Police Gen. Pongsapat made the announcement that the Country was back to normal and everyone could relax now go about their lives as normal. But now his subordinate  Lt.  Gen Charnthep says people should be vigilant.

So what is it to be? Any chance of some consistency with public utterances?

I doubt that multiple casualties was intended. I believe the aim was to create maximum panic and international news coverage with minimum casualties. Seems to have worked.'

the fortunate part is that some of the devices did not detonate and or were discovered before they were detonated.cold it be possible that the bomb makers were not totally efficient in the making of the bombs.

This was just after people were told that the situation has "returned to normal" and and that people should continue with their lives as normal. What idiots make statements like this.

The junta will never admit that Thailand is under a possible bomb situation. The country will always be normal and there will never be any follow up from Any media as to who is/was responsible.Thailand can never be threatened by bombers. This on one hand could show how much of the poulace actually hate the current regime.Ant that can never be revealed. It could also point to the first signs of civil unrest and would show that there are citizens that have actually got some back bone and are wanting an out from the current state of the controlled nation.Every thing must get back to  what appears to be normal to save what is left of their already dwindling tourist trade.Never having had bombing/terrorism,on a large scale, like the USA and England etc,the authorities must be panicking, because never having experienced it,they do not know what to do,or how to handle it.On the surface everything must appear normal, and the lady tourist minister must be having all sorts of speeches ready to overcome her previous appearance where she showed, how absolutely unprepared and lost for words she was.

What are the famouse sayings from a few years back?

"There is no such thing as the Mafia"

"No one expects the Spanish inquisition!"

In my opinion,if these bombings continue and there are no arrests, and nothing seriously is done.Thailand needs to go outside it borders for advice, because they seriously haven't got a clue. Why do you think that these rewards from the Governer of Phuket and the government are being offered So quickly. The panic is embarrassing.

Has it been determined whether all of these unexploded bombs are in fact "duds" (defective), or simply not yet triggered to detonate?  If the latter, I would say that the situation is far from "normal".

Look, there are no terrorist bombers in LOS.

The situation has returned to normal, so if you get blown up it is only because someone put another bomb out.

You can,t expect us to find new ones until they are planted.

So carry on Be happy don't worry we have the situation at hand.

Drive safely, keep your windows up and kids at home, thats why we closed the schools.

Two more undetonated bombs/incendiaries were also found in Bang Niang, Khao Lak yesterday. It ain't over yet, folks!

Yes I believe it is over. Because these are the same type of bombs that was put there by the same people , most probably on the same day as the bombs exploded.

I thought, drug running, people smuggling, and graft were well above the importance of a mere 10% take in LOS,s economy

Last night in Hua Hin at the large food court on Soi 88 (hundreds of people very night) and after a very poor police response to the first bombing, suddenly there were squads of military people walking around. They looked like Thai Air Force with blue uniforms with many wings insignias and park rangers in light brown and green uniforms.  Radios with no guns or any other type of gear.

This was the first real "police" action I have seen here and I am sure finding the unexploded bombs had everything to do with this new wave of police presence.

Of course, all they did was stand around.

I drove by the night market which is next to the location of one of the new unexploded bombs. Some police mostly helping tourist cross the street, but it was open.
