dddave Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 I'm suddenly having difficulty shutting down and exiting Kodi. I have v. 16.1 on my Win-8 laptop. I click the power icon, lower left, then click "Exit" on the pop-up menu. The display then freezes and stays that way. About 20 minutes in, I get the small blue rotating circle. After that, the display stays on and frozen. The only way to exit was to force shut down of the laptop, holding the power button down. The problem with doing this is that booting the laptop up next time takes an exceptionally long time. Has anybody else experienced this?
johng Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 Try checking the hard disc for errors http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-2080276/run-chkdsk-windows.html
Peterw42 Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 What was kodi doing prior to shutdown, streaming an addon, playing a local movie etc, did you stop the stream/movie etc? Have you gone to task manager to shut it down ?
scooterboy Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 Yes, I get this problem occasionally on my desktop. However, I can get the Task Manager to pop up, by using ctrl, alt, delete - then it's possible to force-close Kodi. The alternative is to not close by normal methods - just close the "x" box in the top corner - if you have this facility, of course. Cheers
JHolmesJr Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 Kodi needs regular weekly maintenance….cleaning all caches, cached art, package folders….if you dont do this it becomes bloated and sluggish. There is a program that does this…just run it once a week….Ive had no problems so far.

Thanks also to Scooterboy and JHolmes for your replies.
Peterw42 Posted August 23, 2016 Posted August 23, 2016 (edited) Even Alt TAB will get you out of Kodi, My theory, a bad add on, see if it freezes useing another streaming add on Sometimes you need to stop movie first then back out Edited August 23, 2016 by Peterw42

I think this would vary depending on the platform (Android, Linux, Fire Stick, Windows, Mac) etc.? For Android, just go to System, Settings, Apps, Kodi, tick "Clear cache".

The name of the program is Community Portal….and it can be found on the noobs and nerds repository. It will ask you to register to unlock more features but that isn't necessary…just click on maintenance….you can use'clean my kodi folders' for a quick clean up….or go to advanced options and run the following 3 options: 1. Clear all cache folders 2. Clear caged artwork (thumbnails and textures)…..it repopulates automatically when you start kodi next time. 3.Clear Packages folder I usually run these things just before I turn off Kodi and shut down.
