Local vendors oppose Supercheap rumored to open in Rassada

PHUKET:-- Local vendors took to the streets of Rassada on Tuesday to voice their opinions, following rumors that Supercheap plans to open a store in the area.

About 40 vendors gathered in Soi King Kaew Utit at about 5:30pm.

“Panumas Nukuea, one of the vendors, has stated that locals can’t compete with the prices that Supercheap offers its customers and that they will not be able to earn any money if a store opens here,” village head Prasert Ruangdam told the Phuket Gazette.

That is too bad for the local vendors.. but a boon for the consumers. I don't really see why vendors should be entitled to make money on consumers.

We're witnessing a changing retail world. 
Only 10 years ago, there was 3- 7/11's, no supercheaps, and no family marts within 2 miles of my house. 
Now, there are 8- 7/11's, 4 supercheaps and 5 family marts in that area. 

Mom & Pop stores: 10 years ago they were aprox every block or two. 
Now, there are only a few left, and dying out every year. 

 

Supercheaps sure are cheap. 
But, man are they dirty,  with untrained staff, boxes blocking most of the aisles, and mostly junk quality goods.
(but I still go there, as I love a bargain) LOL

 

What's next? drone deliveries from online ordering?  Amazon in Thailand?  

Probably.

The economy and actually the whole society of Thailand is changing. Those who oppose changes will go under eventually. There's just no way around it. Instead of spending their time and energy on fighting Supercheap which is clearly futile, they could do something more productive. It's hard for people to change jobs, very tough. But that's life unfortunately.

 

What's the alternative? Always keep the current state? Ok, so maybe go back to where they didn't even have their cars and scooters? Let everyone be a farmer again?

With the huge expansion in population and development on the Island in recent years, the local vendors are probably making a lot more money now than when they opened their shops.

It's inevitable that that same development becomes a two edged sword for them as the big chains move in. Welcome to the world!

Back in the old country, I remember all the bleating from the corner Delis as supermarkets started opening up big centers in the suburbs. Change was inevitable.

Yet the new generation is making QUALITY mom and pop store thrive again in Thailand and in the west. The problem is that a lot of these vendors are useless lazy bums that just want to buy stuff from supercheap and resell it in a dirty stand.

Younger Thais have no issues paying a small premium if the place is nice to look at. There's this restaurant here surrounded by 4 dirty ones, the decoration is really good. The food is a lot worse than all the dirty places next door with white walls and barely more expensive, maybe 5 or 10b more depending on the plate, yet it's jam packed everyday.

On the upside, they now don't have to travel too far to buy their goods for resale.

That's the spirit! Embrace it, don't fight it. They could even optimize this further by working for Supercheap so they don't have to rent their own places anymore and don't even have to manage inventory

Competition is good for the consumer. Local stores cn very well compete with supercheap and the like. Offer better quality, service, competence,  friendliness. There are ways of attracting customers other than going super cheap.

very familiar story. rather than finding alternatives, they impede competition and progress. yet the same people ask for democracy.

Big C and Tesco are already doing a fine job. much of their merchandise is more competitively priced than any of the local markets and prices being fixed, shopping is all the more pleasurable and in a much more pleasant atmosphere.

there  are many who cannot work for others for some reason or the other. they prefer to be their own bosses. but you have move on. either face the competition or phase out.

I remember when the owners of the mom "n" pop stores had a large protest when Tesco-Lotus and Big C first came. They thought that they would steal all their business.

Meanwhile, not a peep from them as 711 and Family Mart undermined them.

 

Supercheap is what it is. Not so great quality at a great price. Supercheap is a local Phuket company that is viewed as a "Champion" as it competes successfully with the more national brands of convenience stores.

Very successfully. Look at what has happened to the Lotus store in Chalong (Viset Road) since the Supercheap there opened closeby.

Same in Kata ... Lotus shop is finished. Staff just marking time until closed, much like Big One.

Yes, Big One Chalong and Kata closed.

 

Lotus Kata though is a smaller shop, more competing with the 7/11s than with the Super Cheap.

Yes, and the worst run of them all. It's only saving grace is that it's on the other side of the road from all the others, that's the only reason I go in there.
