I'm not disputing their ability but:

Cat burglar definition, a burglar who breaks into buildings by climbing through upstairs windows, across roofs, etc., especially with great stealth and agility.

Always use a synonym regardless of its appropriateness.

Burglar:a person who commits burglary.

Take your pick:

Synonyms:housebreaker, robber, cat burglar, raider, looter, pilferer, picklock, thief, sneak thief, safe-breaker, safe-blower, safe-cracker; kleptomaniac;

informalfilcher, cracksman;
informalsecond-story man/worker, yegg

Hey presto, you have become an "imaginative,creative" journalist.

Your definition is flawed.  A burglar is a person who breaks and enters into an abode at night with intent to steal.  It doesn't matter whether the burglar actually takes anything.
