BANGKOK: -- An attempt by Department of Special Investigation (DSI) officials, police and military personnel to get into Wat Dhammakaya through Gate 4 Thursday afternoon failed after protesting monks and lay followers blocked the gate.

The officials used a cutting pliers to cut open a lock and tried to get through Gate 4 only to find themselves confronting about 200 Dhammakaya followers who blocked the gate and an adjoining bridge across a klong.

Military personnel tried in vain to talk the protesters to leave the gate so that the officials could get in while the monks chanted prayers.

The confrontation was brief after which the government officials decided to retreat to ponder their next move.

Later in the afternoon, the DSI told the media that the officials tried to enter the temple ground through Gate 44 in order to investigate shooting incident in the morning when a shot, suspected to come from an air gun, struck the front windshield of a military vehicle.

The shooting incident was considered to be a threat to the officials performing their duties around the temple, said the DSI, adding that it was suspected that the shot might have come from someone among the Dhammakaya followers gathering on a bridge next to Gate 4.

" Military personnel tried in vain to talk the protesters to leave the gate so that the officials could get in while the monks chanted prayers ". Ever heard of tear gas? What about POLICING and RIOT control? What a joke.

In the meantime, the barriers grow larger, deeper and more dangerous for all concerned.

Just freeze all known Money making accounts of the temple....

Wouldn't work. remember Suthep when his accounts were freeze. Many will be willing to donate. The junta government is fast running out of ideas and getting desperate. 3 more days to the 5 days date-line and not an inch of the temple taken.

Seems like the Junta could slip in a few forest rangers in orange (with guns) who can fire off a few rounds, maybe even winging some poor policeman, then this would give them a reason to "crack down"? This has worked before.

I have lost all respect for monks. Too bad because I wanted think they were honest.

The trend is truly disturbing.

A proportion of Thai monks have proven themselves to be violent, money-hungry, greedy & horny pedophiles.

Truly a slap in the face of Buddhism.

The Dhammakaya temple is a bastion of corruption and greed.

I think after this fiasco is over, it should either be torn down brick by brick,

or converted to a library / school / university, for the benefit of the poor/unprivileged.

Probably won't happen in a million years, but one can hope.

there will be no crackdown, I think most people should have realised by now that these bald people wearing orange cannot be physically touched in any way, the police can't even detain them until they are defrocked.

Until something changes this whole thing is a waste of time - they are literally untouchable

As for freezing bank accounts - how exactly are they going to find them, you think these establishments keep their huge sums of money in a regular savings account at Bangkok Bank - I don't think so

The lack of awareness here is dumbfounding. The Thai news media like the Bpost and Nation repeat government propaganda without doing their jobs.

Most people don't even know the money laundering charge is a junta distortion and the credit union was repayed and dropped all charges but the other temples, universities, etc. that received money have not repayed, not been charged and no promises to repay the credit union. This country is going broke and looking at the temples wealth.

In fairness to the Thai media, they must comply with the government's wishes for face the consequences, that's what happens under military rule. At least we have the Internet (for now anyway) for researching and fact finding.

If Thailand allowed such autonomy to Muslim Malay-Thais in the South, that would be the end of the insurgency.

But they're not Buddhists, so a different standard of enforcement applies.
