BANGKOK — Traffic in the Thonburi area is expected to flow more smoothly after the Bangkok’s longest tunnel opened Tuesday morning.

The Mahai Sawan Tunnel, which runs parallel to the Somdet Phra Chao Taksin Road to pass under Rama II Road, opened for round-the-clock use by motorists starting today.

The one place they really need a tunnel would be the Asoke-Sukhumvit intersection. Construction would be costly and the traffic jam unbearable.

Would have to move the MRT first

in fact they have plans for a flyover to go from Asoke junktion to pechiburi. Can you imagine double the car fumes there in summer? Uh

Why do they keep building 2 lane tunnels?  They are inadequate.  Another big project on Pattanakarn is also planned for two lanes.  They don't seem capable of planning for the future.

They think yesterday was the future.

Anyone have the heart th tell the Thais they only have a trench, not a tunnel?

theres a little tunnel where rama 3 road goes over the top of it, about 200 yards. I live near there and the traffic was totally chaotic when they were building this.

Bad choice of words It is an underpass

Clearly you haven't inspected the site...

An underground passageway, dug through soil and enclosed except for entrance and exit, commonly at each end, is called a tunnel.

At Rachapruck Road is a similar tunnel/underpass which is like 3 years old now. Right at the deepest point they opened up all the wallpanels to show the totally rotten drain?-pipes...Guess the contractor forgot to use high quality pipes.

But the pipes are still uncovered or fixed...the wallpanels are removed for a year or so now. Don't understand why they don't fix it.
