Went to renew my 5 year license at DLT Prah Khanong, opp soi 62/1

Field report for info.

Had to provide my old thai license, Passport and photocopy main page and visa page.

Note that visa has to be a one year non-Imm if you don’t have a work permit.

1. Go to the desk at the entrance, they have a simple form and help check the appropriate items.

There is no need for the drivers license application  form.

Did not need a medical cert (5 year renewal)

2. Then go to counter in front, they check the papers you wait and they give you a number card with the papers.

3. Then go to the test room no 14 / 15.

Do the brake and depth perception test.

Do the peripheral vision test

(There was no color blindness check)

Papers get signed passed, go back outside and wait for the video you have to watch.

4. The videos is in a room adjacent, for one hour and they start on the hour .

Notice states 9.00, 10.00, 11.00, 13.00, 14.00

However they did have one at 12.00 on the day that I attended.

When the video finishes you get your papers back.

5. Go to the middle front desk give in the papers and get a queue ticket.

Sit and wait. (not very long expect 15 to 30 minutes)

6. When your number is called go to the desk

Confirm passport / personal details. Pay cash (655 Baht).

They take a photo. Wait a few minutes for card to print.

Collect and finished.

All appeared to be pretty efficient. I got there at 10.45 last friday, waited 30 mins for video 11.30 – 12.00, and left at 13.30.

Added

Forgot to mention that I went a few days after my birthday and expiry date of my old license.

The new license is now until april 2023. (next birthday+ 5 years ).

Confirming that you get almost 6 years if you renew just after the expiry.

You also need the confirmation of residence. Missed above.

From immigration or from embassy.

I was told that Immigration will take so me time - you have to go submit application and  wait for the letter to be posted to you.

Since I wanted to get the license done quickly I went to the British Embassy.

Appointment was needed  went at 8.00am and got the letter within about 40 minutes.

Note that for appointment it needed about a two week look ahead.

Not having to do the colour blindness test would be a bonus for me as I'm colour blind. Did pass the 1 year and then the 5 year, but with a little help from my friends, nudge, nudge, wink, wink.

Correct name for this DLT is: Bang Chak.

I have been there twice, did not watch video any of the times

He mentioned Work Permit, which has your current home address in it.

Yes, correct as I understand it. People with a work permit don't need the proof of residence.

I had a 1 year retirement extension and needed the affirmation of residence.

I used that office last October (late October) and my work permit, which at that time had just over 2 weeks left (I subsequently renewed it later) was accepted in lieu of a residence certificate or embassy letter.

The address that was printed on my DLs (car and motorcycle licenses) was the address as shown in my work permit; my employers address. If I wanted a different address, I would need either an embassy letter or Immigration residence certificate.

But the WP worked just fine and was accepted (and would be accepted as I asked) right up to the very last day of its validity.

How this may be addressed at other DLT offices may vary, but this is how it was for me at the office mentioned by the OP

Last time I was there, they let a few through who couldn't pass the braking test. The one in charge made a point of saying lucky that it was her turn, not everyone would allow it ...:saai:

The woman who does the peripheral vision test, which requires color distinction, seemed to enjoy rudely failing me, suggesting I come back the next day and then failing me again.  I am peripherally  color deficient.   A surprisingly high percentage of people are.

I ended up going to Chiang Mai which uses a color identification chart and I have no problem with recognizing colors.

I posted about my experience at Bang Chak a couple of years ago and several people confirmed a similar unpleasant experience with that testing station. .

Agree that the lady doing the test was quite rude as I tried to get the hang of it.

Difficult when I take my glasses off because I am not used to the idea of judging the side awareness.

I insisted that because I normally wear glasses I needed to get a bit more practise, did so after others had finished, then repeated the test and passed.

So regardless of the address provided we are free to apply for the extension at any DLT, is that correct?

May I ask, were you able to just walk out with your about to expire DL or did they keep it after you failed the test?

There was a form that they stapled to my documents that I kept and I just left with it and my driver's license.  I don't think they note the failed test.  If you pass you just take the documents to the next step.  Nobody mentioned anything about it in Chiang Mai.

I don't know the answer to whether or not you can renew at any DLT.  It seems so.  Bang Chak was fine with my renewing it there.  The five year license I was  renewing had a Bangkok address but I originally got it in Chiang Mai.  At that time my work permit listed two businesses, one in Chiang Mai and one in Bangkok and my residential address in Bangkok.   When I went for the renewal the Chiang Mai business work permit had been cancelled and they renewed with my Bangkok address.  Nobody seemed much concerned about it.

Thanks, noted.

Looks like it may be  possible to get at another district office.

Interesting to know that you were given the old license back. That leads to another question.

How long is it valid after the expiry date? Did they perhaps say anything / give you any warning.

I did a search recently and it wasn't conclusive . Maybe a month.

Has anybody researched and got a firm answer?
