Bangkok readies for heavy rains and flooding

BANGKOK, 11 May 2017 (NNT) – All 50 district offices of Bangkok has prepared plans to respond to flooding with the Department of Drainage and Sewerage (DDS) to keep them abreast of the situation on an hourly basis.

Deputy Bangkok Governor Chakkaphan Piew-ngam said that as the Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rains for the capital during this period the city has had to prepare plans for its low lying areas and areas where drainage is often slow.

The capital has tapped DDS to coordinate with all of its 50 district offices and establish responses to flooding. DDS will monitor rainfall as well as drainage to inform the decisions of each of the offices.

The city has also readied all of its canals, pipelines and up to 2,000 water pumps to handle rainfall.

Chakkaphan explained that rainfall below 60 millimeters should not cause flooding, while 90 millimeters and up would spur an urgent response.

Didnt read that they have had men out clearing rubbish from the khlongs or dredging blocked waterways to help prevent flooding.  No, they only have plans for when there is flooding !!

According to the article they have.

Is this news worthy of email bulletin / LINE update, et al? Is there severe weather coming imminently?

Or is this just more "posturing" in advance of the rainy season?

If the former, some weather / meteorological information would be useful.

If the latter, kinda stupid to post this. They are giving up their deniability when the rainy season does hit and the inevitable problems start happening.

Correct, they haven't done anything... 2000 water pumps means nothing has been done to clear drainage or khlongs

just pump & push the water somewhere else.

Imagine if people stopped throwing plastic and other garbage everywhere then the drains and canals could actually function as intended.

Oh, no time or money to fix it again this year.  Maybe that's what the subs are for?

And it still ain't enough to prevent flooding in many areas.  The news article released by the National News Bureau of Thailand (i.e, a department of the govt) is just the govt crowing that it's ready for heavy rains in Bangkok--NOT!!   Well, it is ready to "watch" the heavy rains unless it's during non-duty hours.

Prayut said that he had it all under control...If he said it, it must be true............

Had the boys out Sunday scooping the much from Sukhumvit drains. Nice new uniforms.  Much better than the old prison cloths.

They found tons of sand and garbage.

Well done fellows!
