What program are you using to open the PDF file?  There are a dozen or so in common use.  Do you have the file or are you asking for it from the internet?  Is your browser set up to directly read PDF?

You might need to download the file and then click on it to open.

Is this a .pdf file you were expecting or already have and need to open?

If unexpected, then it's possibly a Trojan virus and should be deleted (and your system looked over for possible infection).

Many major Browsers can open .pdf files natively.

There's always the ubiquitous free .pdf file readers out there.  So if it can't be opened it's probably damaged.

I get this message whenever I try to open the pdf file FBAR FinCEN form 114 downloaded from the US gov't with anything other than the Adobe Reader version 10 or higher.  As a linux user, my only recourse was to run the latest Adobe in Wine.

I use Nitro Reader 3

with this freebie, one can also add your own text - good for filling out the blank fields on pdf proformas

As said above try different pdf reading tools.  A quick drag & drop into your browser's main window would be a good start.

There is the possibility that the file is protected in a way that some readers can't figure out, hence the error message.

As a linux user I run xpdf on a downloaded file and it works.  The linux version of firefox opens .pdf files if it's up-to-date, just click on the link and wait for it to offer "open" or "download".  I'd recommend download because if it's malware it will fail to open and you can delete it from the commandline -- not using the "trash" unless you're prepared to "Empty Trash can" to actually overwrite it.

Exactly the situation.....  How did you resolve it  Run Adobe in Wine, don't understand...

The specific pdf file that gives me this message is a specially crafted pdf file that can only be opened with Adobe Reader version 10 or higher. which is what their web site says.  The other pdf viewers that the other posters have suggested will not work with this file, and you will get this message.  This is a US gov't form that needs to be filled out, digitally signed, and submitted to them through their web site, so I assume that's why it was done this way.  If your pdf file is similar,  the only resolution is to use the latest Adobe Reader to open it.

If you are a Windows user, you can just download the Adobe Reader, install it, and use it to open the file.  If you are a Linux user, like me, and since Adobe had stopped supporting Linux since Adobe Reader version 9,  I need to use Wine in order to run this Windows program.  If you are a Mac user, I don't really know if Adobe has a Mac version for you, but I think they do.

This is also not to discount the possibility that your pdf file contains some kind of malware or has been corrupted in some way.

For me, NFFBAR.pdf opens fine with Adobe Reader or Foxit Reader but error with Sumatra PDF (this was expected as it usually only opens 'simple' PDF s)

Edit....Sorry Higgy88, got mixed up between you and op, did not read you were Linux user.

Have a go.  And let me know if you can do it.

BTW, I did take a look at the xdpf, but after some of the comments in the repository I didn't bother to install it.

Looks like you're going to have to use a vm or wine.  I can download the file but they have is set up so that any attempt to download by an system they don't support just points you at Adobe :(   I can open the instructions .pdf in my browser, but no more than that.

Some while ago I had similar issues with a bank using flash for important stuff, and I have a flash filter.

Like @jpinx, I too suggest having a Virtual Machine ready where you can launch a Windows OS that has an actual installed copy of Adobe Reader or Microsoft IE for those times when some federal group of idiots only allow specific software be used to complete a required task. If you can get a Windows version of whatever to run under WINE, then that's great too.

Don't forget, guys.  I am not the OP.  I just wanted to point out to him that I have also seen this error when trying to open a pdf file, and what I had to do about it.   And I do not see where he has gotten back to tell anyone just how he is trying to open the file.

So it is the FBAR FinCEN form you're trying to complete.

What OS and software are you trying to use to open and complete the form?

The PDF-1.7 file OP is actually trying to open has been created with Adobe Lifecycle Designer 11.0 and the problem noted here above seems to go on and on and on...

In this particular case 'Master PDF Editor' might be of help but it's of course not free because implementing the latest bells and whistles takes a lot of time and money ... you'll probably have to search for a particular Adobe Reader version that fits.

Since only Adobe products seem to be involved here, try one of the Adobe forums?
